I don't believe it's an easy task for a vocalist to keep up with the demand required by DT music itself, in this case (The Astonishing's). In addition to the musical demand, I think it would be a bit tough to swing your voice from "just a guy" to the "fragile Maiden" to the "Tyrant" back to the "fragile Maiden" and back to the "just a guy" voice... I'm not a singer in any way shape or form, but as a former drummer that has play in many bands with many singers, it's not just a matter of "singing the song" (in Dream Theater's case especially)!
In this album, and in much of DT music in general, I believe a second singer could have been useful. Perhaps a female voice, but not necessarily... It could complement their music , DT music often requires more than the current 5 members. They use orchestra and choir sometimes live, and I think they could gain from having added a sixth member, although this far into their career , it might be too late now..

One of my top 5 concerts ever was the Astonishing in Albany,NY 4-19-16. Amazing show.
