+axlrosea675 I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, but it has also grown on me a lot. The first time I listened to it, I hated it. I thought it was super cheesy, overindulgent, and way too long. But now I see the many strengths this album has. Albums like this absolutely need several listens before judging haha
I listened to it once and hated it, too much melodic stuff, boring. I decided to give it another shot but I couldn't even finish the CD1, I fuckin' HATE IT. Period. I just listen their old stuff, ADTOE was the last good album I heard from DT.
I love how at 0:44 - 0:55 mangini follows Rudess with the bow of his ride. Im going to try this syncing technique with our pianist in adv jazz band. Also i love the emotion this song gives.
He's been doing this since his drum audition with DT. I simply love how he connects with all the other players (not just DT) as such musically, and his tireless attention to detail. Finally learned a cool lesson on why my high school band lost some of our competitions.
I never knew Someone was out there A long way from nowhere Who could open my eyes All of this time While I was sleeping The world changed around me Now I've never felt more alive I'm waking up From a life left behind To see what lies ahead I'm waking up Fate found a way To bring them together Once and forever And won't let them go Nothing I say Can keep her from leaving Her life has new meaning I lost her a long time ago I'm waking up From a life left behind To see what lies ahead I'm waking up I'm waking up Now that yesterday's gone Won't close my eyes again I'm waking up I'll plan to return well disguised Make sure that I'm not recognized Tomorrow a new sun will rise And somehow I'll find you Nothing will stand in my way Soon I will see you again I'm waking up From a life left behind To see what lies ahead I'm waking up I'm waking up Now that yesterday's gone Won't close my eyes again I will never look back I'm waking up You'll be her shadow as she moves my son But she can never know you're there She is alone and rebel guards are everywhere I'll keep her safe from all danger Won't let her out of my sight Did I fail to mention my honest intentions? This is the chance I deserve Heed my words justice will be served
+Sd Ny Being a musician for 10 years, they make me want to stop composing altogether and just listen to them forever. I've been making music for myself the past several years because most bands I listened to always left something to be desired in one way that another band made up for it, but Dream Theater comes up with such amazing stuff that I don't feel the need to do that as much anymore. I know I'll never put down a guitar, but damn it if they don't make it hard for me to play anything half as good. It's very humbling. That being said, they've still been a huge help with learning how to introduce progressive elements to my music.
+Jon Warrell Nah man. I am composing still, and there are still much Dream Theater has not done. You should not give up because you feel bested by them. Maybe your music won't be as technical and complex, but you can still be creative.
Looking back on that comment, I probably could've worded it differently but overall wasn't totally serious. Nothing can really make me stop playing or composing because I still come up with stuff I like to play and I like others to hear. However, I still stand by what I said about being humbled by Dream Theater. They truly are a great inspiration and influence no matter what I say.
I actually got to see this live. They had like 8 projectors with animations showing the whole story. It was soooooooo good. When in the presence of it I was moved to anxiety, tears and relief. John's body language while playing exploded from him while playing. I oddly enough felt it was a wave every time he struck a chord or solo.
I love the piano and acoustic guitar on this album! It reminds me a bit of Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, one of my favorite albums. But of course it's a completely unique album as well. :D
+Mike B You say....as a comment to a song that doesn't even start with keyboards. XD lh3.googleusercontent.com/-lvbYtj_nP14/VYzvja93fDI/AAAAAAAAAP4/Hmbd1ETi120/w506-h750/bnkhYlG.gif
True. Take this song. It starts out like Yes and turns into a song like Faithfully never returning to the original good part of the song. The album as a whole sounds like Jordan had all the control.
+Mike B While I agree that the beginning is a really cool part and I wish they'd done more with it, I also really like the rest of the song. I wouldn't call it the bad part of the song just because it's more keyboard heavy. In fact, I've always wanted Dream Theater to focus on the keyboard more so this is kinda perfect to me :D
***** XD I laughed out loud at your response. I agree, it would be weird to hear someone saying "oh man, this album was too guitar-focused, almost every song started with guitars!" So what's wrong with keyboards mixing it up a bit? My only complaint is the same complaint I have for every Dream Theater album: I wish there was more bass. But we can't have it all, and I'm happy that keyboards are at least getting their time in the sun :D
5:00 minute mark in "A Life Left Behind", very dramatic and cinematic. Really loving this album more with every spin, and its taken a lot of spins to 'get it'.
One of The longest songs on the album, a measly 5:50 by DT standards, very major and one of several ballads. Very different from what we're used to from them but its as dense and perfectly composed as anything they've done. I find this song very moving emotionaly as well as enjoying it on a purely musical level. Album takes a few listens to get in to but damn its so good once you do.
@@danmulcahy6044 When The Astonishing came out I went to see them and LaBrie couldn't sing the songs. He couldn't sustain notes, and not even reach higher notes in songs like Our New World. You on meth though.
Even though I liked every single DT album, I've always been one of those who prefered the early DT. But this song... this ENTIRE ALBUM... I seriously think it's my favorite of theirs. Already got my tickets for the show, this is gonna be one night to remember :') Thank you for this album DT, thank you so, so much.
Whoa! Settle down. I'm not hating on the album. I like the album. I just miss the 10 minutes song that's all. It's like having a GF away on holiday and you miss her.
You'll be her shadow as she moves,my son But she can never know of it She is alone and rebel comes from everywhere James's voice in that stanza is magnificent! 🤘
This song is so amazing. I went right back to it after I finished the album. (Which is amazing, by the way) The singing style during the chorus gives me a '90s Boy-band vibe, but in a completely good way. So catchy, melodious, yet so heavy and complex.
I love this album a lot. I managed to catch them live twice on this tour and it was amazing. I can listen to the first hour or so of this album over and over again. It's a masterpiece
Oh how I love how they bow to all their influences Yes,ELP,King Crimson,Kansas, the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Toto etc. Still make some of the most intense music in prog. Omg this tune brings tears on its sheer musicality and emotional power!!! Omg!!! The very last keys what?
Everything for dream theater songs, is the best... vocal n all music is perfect... Dream theater is the best forever... love u all guys, keep dreaming alive...
This is what I find outstanding about DT - the big variations of the instrumentation in many parts of their songs/albums, because it totally wipes out the repetitive feel (atleast for me it does).
In my mind this is maybe the best song to promote the album to a wider audience. The spicy intro that cures ADHD, the melodic middle part that melts even the most cynical heart and the dramatic ending that leaves you craving for more. Just perfect! But judging by the view count, I know shit... BTW, Mangini is great on this song!
I think that would be Lord Nafaryus, to get the attention of a wider audience, but pointing to those who listen to metal. About Mangini, yeah. He is great in this song. But Richard Chycki is still an idiot who makes the drums sound like a stone. xd
I'm at, what, my 7th listen-through or something, and still there are new songs that I'm taking notice of as being very good. Really, this is a masterpiece that has no equal. Not even Beyond the Red Mirror, though I'd call the individual songs better.
Fucking amazing song. So much great stuff on this album; I'm extremely impressed. Good story, interesting world, great music. Good shit DT! Can't wait to see you guys in concert soon!

I bet you listen to angry metal while you flog your log don't you?
YTazzkickr01 you're an angry little fucker aren't you 😂
Jesus Mariscal what's wrong with angry metal. I love angry metal
Best Intro Ever
+Henrique Tassara I came here to comment the exact same thing!
+Loren Burrell Me too :D
+Henrique Tassara Sounds like something Heart would write
+Instrumedley I got an ELO vibe from the synth vocals and all
+Instrumedley I was thinking Kansas... ;)
One of the best songs they've ever done.
I love how at 0:44 - 0:55 mangini follows Rudess with the bow of his ride. Im going to try this syncing technique with our pianist in adv jazz band. Also i love the emotion this song gives.
Finally someone that seems to notice that
He's been doing this since his drum audition with DT. I simply love how he connects with all the other players (not just DT) as such musically, and his tireless attention to detail. Finally learned a cool lesson on why my high school band lost some of our competitions.
The intro part is soo Yes-influenced!
It's literally Tempus Fugit lmao
I never knew
Someone was out there
A long way from nowhere
Who could open my eyes
All of this time
While I was sleeping
The world changed around me
Now I've never felt more alive
I'm waking up
From a life left behind
To see what lies ahead
I'm waking up
Fate found a way
To bring them together
Once and forever
And won't let them go
Nothing I say
Can keep her from leaving
Her life has new meaning
I lost her a long time ago
I'm waking up
From a life left behind
To see what lies ahead
I'm waking up
I'm waking up
Now that yesterday's gone
Won't close my eyes again
I'm waking up
I'll plan to return well disguised
Make sure that I'm not recognized
Tomorrow a new sun will rise
And somehow I'll find you
Nothing will stand in my way
Soon I will see you again
I'm waking up
From a life left behind
To see what lies ahead
I'm waking up
I'm waking up
Now that yesterday's gone
Won't close my eyes again
I will never look back
I'm waking up
You'll be her shadow as she moves my son
But she can never know you're there
She is alone and rebel guards are everywhere
I'll keep her safe from all danger
Won't let her out of my sight
Did I fail to mention my honest intentions?
This is the chance I deserve
Heed my words justice will be served
Thanks
Great!
Jesus Christ God resurrected king 👑 is the answer
Probably my favorite song on the album. Time will tell.
My favorite song on this album as well Rohan Marathe!!!!!!!!
Years later and I consider this the best track from The Astonishing.
What did time tell you? I can only pick the top 3 songs, I can't choose one of them: This One, Three Days and A New Beginning
3:42 One of LaBrie's best moments on the album imo
+FearTheBlades This whole album was like a big middle finger to all that LaBrie haters out there. James absolutely killed it.
@@Beefnhammer That's because he has the help of the studio.
Didn't remember that intro. Thought for a moment someone put some ELO song instead of DT or something.
Great intro, highly enjoyable song
that bass line though
+Nabil Toumanari nice photo!
+Ricardo Martins thanks dude
Myung is The GOAT.❤❤❤❤
Adore this song and album, nobody will ever change my mind, thanks Dream Theater :)

I love how this album is like a musical play without the acting. You could honestly probably put this on a stage pretty easily.
Queens Rych did it with operation mind crime

Its called a concept album
I love the piano and acoustic guitar on this album! It reminds me a bit of Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, one of my favorite albums. But of course it's a completely unique album as well. :D

I like the song which can spread the positive energy. After listening to this song, I feel my life is full of hope, everything is possible.

+Les Young Yes! It´s like a tribute! I love it!
Reminds me a bit of Hiromi Uehara, but i don't know exactly why
That's so true !
I now right
one of the 14 songs I actually liked on the album
THAT DRUM FILL in 1:19 had me shit in my pants.
I think I'll cry, so beautiful
My favorite of the entire album. Why couldn't this be the classic 12 minute DT epic though? So much potential in the front and near the end...
+DRW1107 While I do think this album is great, I do miss the 10 minutes songs they do.

+Craig Carlton on other songs ,absoluty , but this one is Yes
Best song on the whole album
Please DT release mini album that is compilation of best riffs from this album. Something like Shattered Fortress.
i might work on something like that actually
Maybe in live, later. Like did Haken with Aquarius album in their lives, like a medley.. It would be awesome
The intro reminds me of the music from Assassins Creed 2 when you're in Florence for some reason.
I really like the lyrics of this one, written intelligently.
