I think the best in isolation from the rest of the album is When Your Time Has Come, because it's the only one IMO that doesn't really need context to be a good song. Outside of that it's really all personal preference.
Love the mixture between military marching music, gospel, even swing and off course prog in this record. The Astonishing has such a fresh sound, i just wish the songs were a little bit longer, imagine how great this could have evolved if the band gave the music enough time
[Arhys & Rebel Militia] Brother can you hear me? Your life is in my hands I will not surrender Never yield to his demands If we stand together We will never fall Brother we're the answer to your call Brother can you hear me? You must not be afraid I will march beside you Have no fear Be strong Be brave We sing the song of freedom Our voices will resound Brother we will never let you down [Gabriel] On the road to revolution We're bound to make mistakes There's a price that we must pay For every choice we make Freedom is a reason To stand up or give in But someone has to lose And someone has to win Brother can you hear me? I am not afraid I will not forsake you I'll be strong and I'll be brave I sing the song of freedom My courage knows no bounds Brother now I stand on solid ground Brother I will never let you down Never let you down!
Though not officially, and maybe not completely intentionally, The Astonishing is, to me, Metropolis Pt. 3. The more you look at the concept and themes, both storywise and musical, as well as some little references here and there (Overture 1928/2285 Entr'acte), the more it starts to look like a brilliant way of expressing the final part of the story: Pt. 1 as a single song, Pt. 2 as an album, and Pt. 3 as a double album! Rock on DT, you've given us something beautiful.
+MrHoweYOUdoin Only this double album is not called "Metropolis pt 3" but "The Astonishing".. So I guess neither officially nor unofficialy that can be it..
Pablo Pallares Haha agreed, I know it's not supposed to be Metropolis Pt. 3 by any means; I just noticed that some of the story's themes tie in to Scenes From a Memory :) I don't mean to suggest that it's supposed to be that way by any means, it just made the album more interesting to me!
Pablo Pallares There are some basic thematic tie-ins, like the overarching theme of finding out who you are and what your destiny is, one brother betraying another, the "death, deceit, and love" themes from Metropolis, etc. Probably just the kinds of ideas Petrucci works best with but still sort of neat :) Gabriel could be seen as The Miracle and Faythe as The Sleeper, and I always think of how Metropolis Pt. 1 ends with "It (love) can only take place when the struggle between our children has ended", just as how Gabriel and Faythe's love unites the Empire and ends the conflict. "Love is the dance of eternity" and "Eternally in harmony, our lives will be astonishing again" struck me as similar. Just little things that interested me, not worth reading into all that much xD
MrHoweYOUdoin Ok, it's a nice theory.. And also the three stories would happen in different periods of time.. Mp pt1 some treat it as if it were a reference of Romulus and Remus, so around 700 BC, then Mp pt2 in 1928 and TA in 2285.. I liked the way you connected those few but important things between the albums..
+Sebastian Mora whoaaah the ending of finally free is almost just like this intro.... the sound of walking... the horns. It has to have been intentional
Arhys is Nicholas who came back. Arhys also has a son and wife. This is his theme which is the last thing heard in SFAM. Daryus is Edward, come back to kill him yet again (still ultimately over jealousy).
I must say that being a long time Chelsea F.C and Dream Theater fan I cannot resist comparing Brother Can You Hear Me to Chelsea F.C's anthem, "Blue is the Colour"! Very, very similar chords and melody!.... This album gets 5 bags of popcorn from me. Have listened 3 times now and can safely say that almost every non-robotic song has touched me profoundly. I genuinely think this was the right pivot for Dream Theater, and the chord progressions and melodies are so interesting to listen to. I think I'll be spinning this album more than any other this year.
Out of the entire album this is the only song I don't fully care for, but I do understand its place and why they stylized it the way they did. Sounds very much like a national anthem.
+Perry D Totally agree on the National Anthem idea, its also a March but the song is very much an anthem, its not the brothers singing to one another, its a song for the people calling one another 'brother'.
Brotheeer I will never give you up Brooother I will never let you down Never gonna run around and desert you Brother i will Never gonna make you cry Never gonna say goodbye Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you :)
Why not? What's the point of having more than one album if not to compare? It's that ere of familiarity that makes or breaks an album for some. For others, it's the stark difference that can pique or revitalize your love for the group. The real question is, why aren't you?
+Rocio Gonzalez Well, Dream Theater really is the kind of band that might put in references to other albums, like people are mentioning the intro is alike to Finally Free. I have to admit I actually don't know Scenes From a Memory well enough to say anything about that though.
+Joao Loureiro Think they are referring to the similarities between this song and "Bring The Boys Back Home" from The Wall. It's not a direct comparison, but it's definitely got the right tone to it.
Dears, please share a backtrack of this song. I love sing this song everyday!!! Dream Theater can you hear me? heheheh :-) Greetings from Brazil!!! Hold on brothers :)
One of the best songs on the album, such great melodies.
One of the best from the album, I'd say. Even though it's hard to rate single songs because they all belong together.
I think the best in isolation from the rest of the album is When Your Time Has Come, because it's the only one IMO that doesn't really need context to be a good song. Outside of that it's really all personal preference.
Love the mixture between military marching music, gospel, even swing and off course prog in this record. The Astonishing has such a fresh sound, i just wish the songs were a little bit longer, imagine how great this could have evolved if the band gave the music enough time
Simply Beautiful. I'm loving this album so far.
On the road to revolution.... wow he sings that soooo beautifully
Love the vocals on this whole album! Really shows what LaBrie is capable of :) Really LOW and really HIGH and soft and strong vocals etc etc :)
There was a song in a song on an album back in 1999. It is the beginning of this song that is the ending of that old song. Or so it seems.
When that "on the road to revolution" part is pure fucking goosebumps. I love it
[Arhys & Rebel Militia]
Brother can you hear me?
Your life is in my hands
I will not surrender
Never yield to his demands
If we stand together
We will never fall
Brother we're the answer to your call
Brother can you hear me?
You must not be afraid
I will march beside you
Have no fear
Be strong
Be brave
We sing the song of freedom
Our voices will resound
Brother we will never let you down
[Gabriel]
On the road to revolution
We're bound to make mistakes
There's a price that we must pay
For every choice we make
Freedom is a reason
To stand up or give in
But someone has to lose
And someone has to win
Brother can you hear me?
I am not afraid
I will not forsake you
I'll be strong and I'll be brave
I sing the song of freedom
My courage knows no bounds
Brother now I stand on solid ground
Brother I will never let you down
Never let you down!
This will be fun to sing at their concert!
I'm in love with the album
Nicolas was listen this before he Died in 1999!! Just Check Finnaly free Final!
+Niko Peñailillo Checked both just now. Finally Free outro has the chords of Regression, which are different from this one's.
+Nuclear Musician I know, but the orquetation and the atmosphere are pretty similar dude :)
I agree haha
+Niko Peñailillo lol :D
Niko Peñailillo hahaha lol
THE SPIRIT CARRIES ON!

MrHoweYOUdoin Like what story's themes?.. "I admit I'm intrigued".. (lol)

that intro.... reminds me Finally Free
+Sebastian Mora Thats right i did'nt notice !! if u think about it sound like the final when Nicolas puts the LP before The therapist kills him!! :O
+Sebastian Mora whoaaah the ending of finally free is almost just like this intro.... the sound of walking... the horns. It has to have been intentional
+Sebastian Mora Just thought about the same thing, been searching for people that noticed it too !! :D
+Sebastian Mora Reminds me too dude!
Arhys is Nicholas who came back. Arhys also has a son and wife. This is his theme which is the last thing heard in SFAM. Daryus is Edward, come back to kill him yet again (still ultimately over jealousy).
This song is MAJESTIC.
lol i get it
every song on the album has its own flavor of ingredient. when the ingredients are put together in the pot for the soup, it makes for a tasty soup.
Great song & great story👍🎤🎸
my favourite Song of this Great master piece of music

The second time i hear the album so far and this is my favorite song.... very emotional...
Penso che ci metterò tutto il giorno ad ascoltarle tutte, ma sono arrivata qui e posso dire che questo album mi piace già tantissimo...
+Nadia Z. - La Lettrice Solitaria Actually, you can listen it 11 times on a day, so I'd say... Go ahead and enjoy.
+Nadia Z. - La Lettrice Solitaria Tu sei bellisima!
+Nadia Z. - La Lettrice Solitaria il piu' bello dai tempi di Images and Words

makes me cry each time i hear this song
Same melody (almost) as Cygnus Book II, by Rush. "I have passed into Olympus, as was told in tales of old"
+23-Infinity I was about to say the same!
+George McKenna
Wicked 8--)
+23-Infinity Yes
Glad to know I'm not the only one who noticed this
+23-Infinity First thing I thought of.

Brotheeer I will never give you up
Brooother I will never let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Brother i will Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you :)
I see what you did there!
I just got rickrolled by a comment under a Dream Theater song. Man 2021 is wild.
Beautiful epic
V. Cygnus: Bringer of Balance
Gutemberg Pedrosa which was also a call back to Holst's The Planets. You have to love how everything is absurdly connected on prog
They are playing this album entirely in their upcomming tour.... man that's going to be insanely awesome.
Fantazy
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Awesome like always!!!!!
3 hour eargasm
Wow! That's all I can say right now... 😳
I can totally see this song on a Final Fantasy videogame. So anthemic and dramatic.
This seriously reminds me of Do You Hear the People Sing
I can see it!
i love it
Reminds me of something off Pink Floyd The Wall, it's awesome!
The part at 2:50 reminds me of a James Horner score but I'm not sure. Does anyone know if this was a tribute to him? it's absolutely beautiful.
I'm not hearing it, and I'm a fan of Horner. Any score in particular it reminds you of?
They still got it.
2nd time I'm listening the album today
Cause I didnt had time before
I want to understand it
why are everyone comparing the songs with their older ones?
Why not? What's the point of having more than one album if not to compare? It's that ere of familiarity that makes or breaks an album for some. For others, it's the stark difference that can pique or revitalize your love for the group. The real question is, why aren't you?
I love what is, not what it seems to be
+Rocio Gonzalez That's a pretty objective statement on a subjective topic.
Sweet badass
+Rocio Gonzalez Well, Dream Theater really is the kind of band that might put in references to other albums, like people are mentioning the intro is alike to Finally Free. I have to admit I actually don't know Scenes From a Memory well enough to say anything about that though.
This has always sounded like the Battle Hymn of the Republic to me. Also Les Miserables..
they put elements of all their albuns
the best sound caralhoo
/
I always hear this song like a first time
I think that's part was inspired on the classic song 'The Capitol Of Power' from Triumvirat (in 2:50)... It's my opinion, right?!
Your life is in my hands.
very cool
I can't say anything ❤️
🌟🕊🙏
Pink Floyd Theater, amazing.
+Eduardo Molina what? Pink floyd is very different and better.
+Joao Loureiro Think they are referring to the similarities between this song and "Bring The Boys Back Home" from The Wall. It's not a direct comparison, but it's definitely got the right tone to it.
+CrapolaFarm exactly!
+Eduardo Molina oh ok, i thought u were talking about the band in general.
sry then :)
TugaPT fuck up
exactly i can hear you brother \m/
the next Metal Gear Solid theme :)
Hmm... I feel some "Outside the Wall" and "Bring the Boys Back Home" vibes from Pink Floyd in that one.
I feel a strong Roger Waters/Pink Floyd vibe here. Beautiful piece.
Dears, please share a backtrack of this song. I love sing this song everyday!!! Dream Theater can you hear me? heheheh :-) Greetings from Brazil!!! Hold on brothers :)
Sounds like The Spirit Carries On
trovo che sia molto bello anche chance or season
I heard this hook melody in Rush's 'Hemispheres'.. Am I right?
A little Les Miserables also...
+DevourSlumber And to think think both songs are reprised at the end.
Oh good, Nicholas didn't have to open his eyes and mess up the song playing on his record player...
-Portnoy, can you hear me?
-Lol, nope.
hahhahahaa :D
Serius
That's funny
Wkwkwk
😆😆😆
Do you wana build a snowman?
Im my head
2019?😁
Nicholas... REALLY!
2019
Sounds a bit like a rework of one of the SFAM songs.
Parece um Hino de Igreja evangélica.
Spotify.
The voice of LaBrie in the albums is beautiful, but live...
Dante vs vergil
sounds like German Volksmusik
nasty, swords? when it comes to the future and you have robots...and those trumpets, what a horror
Reminds me of Pink Floyd... a lot...
Hasta aquí nomás puedo soportar a Dream Theater están DESGASTADOS SIN IDEAS DE LA BUENA MÚSICA QUE HACÍAN LAMENTABLE
Pink Floyd, huh?
Why do I hear shades of Two Pina Coladas by Garth Brooks...
Writes musical about future where music is banned...
Trump can you hear me
One of my least fave songs on The Astonishing, but still awesome!!!
Nope this song wont work for me.. Its too typical for rock opera in a pop rock tunes. No fancy odd meter changes
:21 resuing sound effects in a DT album, thats a nono, they should know better
2:50 a beautiful melody lost in this terrible music
Fabio Cavalcante you misspelled amazing buddy.
That slow part just messes up the whole song
auto rip off
Wow I can't believe so many people think this is one of the best from the album. I think it's one of the worst songs they've ever released.
