did nobody tell you you cannot mig weld chromoly? chromoly is a heat treated tubing, the heat affected zone must be kept as small as possible, and the heat must be as controlled as possible. this is why nhra and sfi mandate that chromoly must be tig welded. mig welding chromoly makes it brittle and it can fracture. if the chassis is already certified, well modifying it in any way voids that. if a tech guy spots that, and they should with how obvious it is, the chassis cert sticker will be removed. the problem is the fix for it isnt just cutting those tubes out and redoing them properly (although that could be done before a tech guy looks at the car), its cutting out the tubing you welded to as its all compromised now. keep in mind this car is at the "screw around and find out" level. if something goes wrong that cage is your lifeline, and if one of those hoops breaks think about where the pointy ends go while your rolling at 200 mph.
Yes 4130 chromoly cage has to be tig welded. You are correct. If yall plan to mess with it again need to tig weld and get some ER70s-2 or ER70s-6 filler rod and tig it
Pour lead in your tube to bend, as a toolmaker l have done this several times building aircraft tooling for a shop I use to work for. We tried sand and never worked. Bend while still warm and heat with a torch to pour it back out after bending. I drive past your shop every day going to and home from work in Saginaw every day if you need a hand trying to bend your Titanium, hit me up.
Bent a lot of thin wall small dia chromoly in my day. It is tough with anything under a 4" radius not to crinkle when using .045 or .035 wall. Sand pack with water helps a bit, but lots of grease and take it real slow. Best tool is a mandrel bender for that stuff

I still want to see the race unit, with the one seater side-by-side in the back of it doing the burnout, and on top of the side-by-side I want a flat tray with a Nitro gas-burning RC car doing a burnout so that way the trucks doing a burnout the car that's on top of the truck is doing a burnout and the car that's on top of the car that's on top of the truck is doing a burnout so there will be three vehicles doing a burnout on the truck I think you should do it man it would be so easy to do it

When using sand in a tube to bend it, you have to compress the sand so much, it can't move in the tube. What you guys did there won't work. Best to weld one end shut and fill up the tube with sand. Then you have a round, flat piece of metal that fits inside the tube and place it on top of the sand. Weld a nut to a washer and weld that to the open end and use a bolt to compress the sand in the tube. Bend the tube and cut off the ends. Takes time, but it works.
As dicked as the world is right now if you want something you either have to make it or have it made custom or modify a similar available part because you ain’t buying it from the usual source

I hate to say it but if you plan on running at tracks that have tech inspection you might oughta go ahead and cut them bwrs out now while the cars apart because they will pull that chassis cert off that car now. And they the main hoop and the driver containment hoop will have to be cut out too now cause the heat from mig welder compromised them, thats what the tech inspector is gonna say so best thing is to cut them bars back out and tig weld it and repaint it and pretend its never been mig welded on if you want to keep the chassis cert unfortunately

Thought I remembered that chromoly had to be TIG welded. It can be MIG welded, but apparently it won't pass NHRA rules. Just FYI.
