Beja!! Welcome to my hometown I love your channel and so happy that you came there!! Unfortunately it is a very sleepy decadent town which is very far of its full potential and hope things get better soon!! Also, you should have tried queijada de requeijão and the Porco Doce (pork made in almonds paste) in Café Luís da Rocha which is the most historic café in town
Excellent, you guys nailed it. That is genuine Alentejo cuisine. The açorda is an excellent dish for a cold day, it warms up your body. The herb you talked about, poejo, in english is pennyroyal. It is also widely used to season olives (not the ones in a can, be the ones you can buy at a street market). Some people do drink pennyroyal tea, which seems to be good for respiratory issues.
You guys really inspire me to make the move to Portugal! (even though I go every year to visit my grandparents) Love how you guys are so open to the Portuguese culture
Sorry I missed Alentejo when I was in Portugal last year. I will definitely make an effort this year when I return. These food tours are great, but it would also be nice to have some of the locals on camera. I had so much fun interacting with them. It was probably the most memorable part of my trip!
Thank you for another incredible vlog. You have captured the essence of the Portuguese culture and attitude toward life, food, and people. I think they are so sincere and take such pride in what they do that you can't have a bad meal in Portugal. I so enjoyed my cycling through there in 2018, and watching your videos, I know I am destined to return. Have a happy and healthy 2020!

Also as a Bejense I would suggest to discover delicatessen (chouriço, paio, etc. from the region) cheeses and olive oil (recommend to go to Lagar of Oliveira da Serra next to Ferreira do Alentejo)
great food and amazing choice of soundtrack, José Afonso is amazing and up to date. Also check more portuguese music... Carlos Paredes, bagpipes, adufes, cavaquinho, folklore, rock... :D you have to go to the region of Coimbra to eat arroz doce, goat meat chanfana
All the best to you both in 2020 Happy New Year 🙏yes the Portugal 🇵🇹 kitchen and also the wines are delicious 😋 Portugal Lisbon 👍and the Algarve climate ☀️☀️☀️
I have this sudden urge to eat more than I should. Thanks for such an interesting episode. Like many, I might add. Always impressed how easily you interact with the locals and in the native language which you seem to have mastered fairly well - minus the até lego ;)
My friends very nice video, most people says that "Carne de Porco á Alentejana" is not a dish from Alentejo but from Algarve, that's why it takes the clams and the cockles, the only thing from Alentejo that is in that dish is the pork meat.
Happy New Year my friends!!!! Well, you are Classy, but today... you went out for a Classic! Its so great to have you back! That Porco Preto Ribs are...OMG!!!
Back again, but this is one of your best... By the way, I discovered that the Alentejan Tomato soup differs according to the area, most do not use the cod, my favorite is the one that adds sliced boiled potato and little slices of bacon and green bellpeper
You will find carne de porco á alentejana in the restourants near to the coast, becouse of one of the ingredients, that is the seafood called ameijoa. Thank for your pashion for my country that i love so much!!!
You should try Abrantes! It's a small city in Santarém but has a lot of history and is well known for its pastry. It's also a part of Ribatejo so it has a lot of typical food, while also being really close to Rio Tejo so it has an amazing view from our local castle! ;)
Hello. I'm from Portalegre in Alentejo and have been around the whole region a couple times, although I can't speak for every place in Alentejo I actually find "carne de porco à alentejana" quite rare to find in the region itself. I find it much more frequently in Lisbon or central Portugal than in Alentejo. Even growing up i never felt like "carne de porco à alentejana" to be a common dish in mine or my friends household, in contrast with the other foods that you guys tried like migas, porco preto and cação for example. Love your channel btw. Happy new year!
U have to travel to Beiras Alta e Baixa, that's a part of the country that are amazing, teh historic villages, the mountains in norte and the plains in south, the food and the wine amazing, and Spain so near
You should try to go in Lisbon , in the Rua Dos Duques de Bragança , the tiny bar serves food from Lamego , a city older then Portugal , and they have tipical food from that city it’s name is Grau D’ouro . The owners are amazing friendly . They also have live music . You should try Bola de bacalhau amazing .
You bring to all Portuguse people the joy on our on heritage!...You bring pride to be Portuguse, and like i said in the first video i see, the best food is outside big citys and the hidden in this "bodegas/tabernas/tascas" in litthe places...Cheers for 2020
Another great vlog that goes way beyond the first half dozen recommendations from TripAdvisor or something of the sort! Having a horde of insider informants helps…😉 "Poejo" is pennyroyal, a plant from the mint family that apparently was used by some women for its alleged abortive properties. But it actually doesn't work for that, it's only very slightly toxic and since it's only used for flavouring it's totally safe to eat (it's not like they're making salad out of it). The song Pennyroyal Tea by Nirvana would have been out of place in this vlog but it would have been funny…😁 Speaking of salads, you should have tried beldroegas (also used in soup but not as nice as it loses its freshness and characteristic crunch). And since Amalie likes tomato soup, why not try the gaspacho alentejano? Maybe for part 2 of this Danes eat Alentejo when it gets warmer?…😉 Also it's endearing to see Amalie struggling to find a word in English but knowing how to say what she means in Portuguese. ☺️
I'm Portuguese and most of what you ate is made for tourists. God! Apple sauce is an english thing! The food in Alentejo can be both light (soups, açordas, fish) and heavy which is the case of the pork. It is commonly seasoned with a paste made of red bell pepper and olive oil. Then it's fried in pork lard. Migas are fried in pork lard too and they look like a brown french omelette. The wine from Vidigueira was a good choice and the açorda de bacalhau was nice. As to the wild boar, it's a recent dish. You should try the typical Ensopado de Borrego. As for the sweets, try the exquisite Pão de Rala. Coca-Cola?! For God sake! Oh, and by the way, Carne de Porco à Alentejana is a dish that you find anywhere but in Alentejo.
13:20 - Nice song choice, more specifically who sings it. I won't ask how or why you arrived at that choice, I'm just going to say that it "fits the bill" like a glove. ; ) 16:55 - Carne de Porco à Alentejana = tascas or less "fancy" restaurants. I'll just leave it at that to avoid a comments' war. Nice to see that the Sado river was carrying a nice amount of water after the 3 storms we had two weeks ago. Godt Nytår!
Sopa de tomate is tomato soup but sopas de tomate is a type of açorda (the one you had before) except the broth is tomato-y. Keep up the good work guys! 👍
Cação is/was a "poor" fish, and nobody used to eat'it on ther coast (they/we prefer grilled fish, and cação is not good for it). So, cação, was "sent" to the interior (Alentejo), and the alentejanos created a fantastic dish using the local erbs .
