Long comment from a Digimon nerd:
Digimon World 2 It's a Game with a interasting plot that somehow gets Lost in the grind nightmare, and other silly stuffs related to the Game.
A Game that needs a remake in the style of Cyber Sleuth, with all the lore of the current Digimon franchise.
The Digital World 2 of World 2 It's just a simulation created by humans. Somehow this simulation started to get "real".
The God of this World, Gaia traped all humans inside this simulation, while plans to control all the Digimon too.
Your character It's just another human sended to this World to help the people. But Akira can't scape. And like all others humans, Akira gets amnesia.
So Gaia, this evil fake god whispers to all Digimons in this World to them to become wild.
This World It's like a military dystopia. The people in the high Ranks are more "closed" to the true of this World.
Infact, only chief Carol knows that they are just sleeping in the real World just like SAO.
Crimson it's seems as evil because he knows the ultimate truth of this World: that they are all inside a simulation. This fact It's important because it may change our perception of this character.
Sadly, the Game didn't make something interasting with this plot at all.

Digimon World 2, along with 3 and Card Battle is my favorite PS1 game. Eventhough i never finished the game, i love the dungeon crawling aspect and the 3 vs 3 battle. I can say that this game is the foundation for future digimon games, especially the digimon stories and cybersleuth franchise

During the battles, I used to draw my Digimon, flip through the guide, and plan out what I wanted to DNA into in order to learn as many new moves [and receive as few repeat Digimon] as possible. The slowness doesn't bother me since I like doing other things while I play games. It can make it hard to figure out where to slot in the time for it though.
I agree it's hard to explain what makes this game so lovable. I can't really defend it in any way, but I do think it's worth trying to those that are curious.
Also, one fun fact about the Veemon line -- in the instruction manual you can see a screencap of an example DNA Digivolution of Greymon & Airdramon with the textbox indicating Veemon is the result. So even though you can't find them in the wild, they still try to hint at how you can get one.

I know people rightfully hate the level caps in this game... But I kind of love it.
I usually got around the stress of it by having 2 "main Digimon" slightly off from each other so I could use one to rapidly level up the other post dna-digivolution and using my third slot for a fodder mon that I I'd raise up to to a level breakpoint (usually level 15 for the +3 level cap)... Of course, the fact that I still remember all this 20+ years later might not be a good sign, playing the early Digimon games optimally required mor studying than your average exam.

  • @screwtokaiba
    @screwtokaiba 3 месяца назад +15

Digimon World 2 is kinda curious since like for how much "problem" its said and did have, its easilly the most enduring concept the series had outside of World 1
The systems are later used in Story and Cyber Sleuth. For how infamous the 9999999999 system are, its something the entire story series of games used
And like generally when talking about monsters games few mentioned the sheer influence DQM had to the overall genre and its particularly relevant here because Digimon World 2 is like the most blatant DQM1 "rip off" ever.
Almost everything about World 2 can basically be traced back into DQM1, down to the most ridiculous details like how DP as a mechanics works EXACTLY like +s(Like DP, Pluses are increased eveerytime you breed into a new monster and can influence results, for example, at DP5, Slime would breed into King Slime). The fact that catching monsters involves giving gifts, beat them up, then the one you beat up LAST is the one you get. The level cap? yeah DQM had that too. They also both used randomly generated dungeon(DQM didnt use overworld enemy though
Another is like, im never particularly heavy into World 2 Vanilla, so i don't know if this is something Vanilla 2 also do, but in Alternative rom hack, the overall fusion results are based on a table of Digimon Races
So for example, "internally" Agumon is a Dragon. Veedramon is a bird. If you combined Agumon and Veedramon, you'd get Vaccine Type Bird-Dragon. Veemon is the Rookie result for "bird Dragon". And yeah the reason why Phoenixmon is the mega are supposed to make sense for Veedramon is because internally Veedramon is a bird. Supposedly the entire Veemon line EXCEPT Veemon is actually Bird(including Flamedramon and Raidramon). Veemon is Dragon(although it mostly doesn't matter)
Looking at DNA calculator though this system seems to be a thing in Vanilla. Checking some fusion results:
    Greymon + Tuskmon - Dragon x Dragon - Vaccine = Agumon
Greymon + Monochromon and Tyrannomon - Dragon x Dragon - Data = Elecmon(who mostly evolves into Data Dragons). Similarly Monochromon + Master Tyranomon also results on Elecmon since theyre both Dragons and Data type wins out
World 3 was honestly the one game in Digimon who actually are wearing the Pokemon influence fully(it had the exact "fight gyms to be the best" pattern). Digimon from the get kinda saw a lot more SMT influence if anything(and World 2 specifically is just DQM).

You convinced me to try this game, mostly because I've played the old Dragon Quest Monsters games which sound VERY similar in their level progression (minus the mystery dungeon-esque traps). I like those games, so playing World 2 is gonne be kind of an experiment if speed is all it takes to make this system more fun. DQM(or DWM in the US) is pretty quick and snappy compared to this one, all things considered.
What I find funny is that despite all the inconsistency and experimentation in the Digimon videogame space, the return to lv1 to get stronger loop seems to persist throughout. The 3 localized World RPGs on the DS have it as well, and require DNA digivolution ala this game to jump evolution lines and gather techs. Heck, even the most modern games, Cybersleuth and Hacker's Memory still rely on going back to Lv1 to move up and down the tree (though they sadly removed the stat inheritance part, making it kinda useless in that way)
That's nothing to say about the unlocalized games. I still need to check out some of those via fantranslations.

There's another frustrating thing(at least for me) about this game is the item storage, especially when you put them in the online storage.
Multiple items don't stack as x2 in your storage but rather occupy ANOTHER item slot. It really makes you think of how much resources to stock up and managing them while exploring the domains.
Missiles, which comes with drill and mag.
Bug Zap, which has 4 variants; BIT, memory, energy, and the dreaded return.
And also the myriad of items to prepare like part fix/mech fix/ep-packs etc.
So yea, quite a bit of itemization before heading out to explore a domain.

Strangely my Imperialdramon was the strongest Digimon I had and everyone else were weak and I was really thinking why...
Alas I never beat the gane since my copy snapped...

Few things we can do to save this god awful game and make it a remake games (no, DW 1 no need because Re Digitize is like a remake for it):
+ make the 3v1 boss battles actually the kind of guy with 1k HP and dealing 100+ area damage to party or causing debuff or having passives. ESPECIALLY for Guardian, Chaos Lord and Crimson. Make them legit hard.
+ battles loadtime might be tied with game limitations and same for when the attack commences. Make those 5x faster to process and now any non-boss encounters will no longer be chore.
+ no BS map layout or at least give at least 1 solutions to open those electric fences that deals damage and blocks path, either from a relatively rare enemy drops or from ground/lesser chest. Oh and also allow the buggy's node animation to check for ANY traps in front of him, including bugs/spider traps.
+ removes level caps on Digimon, or if the game still intended to keep that crap on, at least make the DNA Digivolve meaningful by giving, says 7 or 10+ level cap rather than 4 or 6 only, and especially by making the resulting child a Rookie but with boosted EXP gain until it almost reach level/Digi level higher than the parents. That way, grind is not a much much more any problem.
+ one last thing to add, is to make every human/buggy encounters except Cecilia, WAY harder boss battles with escalating difficulties and diverse team (or thematic teams). Especially for the complete pushovers Bertran and the PC Leaders.
Hope these changes along with others that i might not add or forget, can make DW2 games a lot more better than before. 🫡

That being said this game is majorly flawed. However it felt like it had good intention with not enough time really fine tune each element, making it very grindy and dragged out. The sound track is still timeless tho!

Digimon was always more mature than Pokemon. How often did the anime have mature themes like leadership and the struggles that happened numerous times between Matt and Tai and how it affected the group as a whole. The theme of death and rebirth. I always saw the show as more mature. The digidestined having to make incredibly adult and mature decisions when they themselves are quite young. Yes Ash and the gang had team rocket and the like but the digiestined had to save the world from evil forces multiple times.
As for the Game i really enjoyed it and honestly if i could make a pitch for a digimon game i'd largely use Digimon World 2 to showcase it. Keep the 3 teams we have in as guard clubs or create new ones to give out missions and our starter digimon. You mention that the game enviorment pales in comparison to the first with 2 having a dungeon crawler vs 1's several locations. Games now a days like Pokemon Legends Arceus and Genshin Impacts open world sections could be a start for a Digimon game. Have the real File Island have Toy Town and all these special areas that are home to certain digimon that we can tame similar to how we get them in Digimon World 2.
Extend to online play with the tamer club serving as a GTS of sorts for trades and battles and perhaps even bring back the collseum and have tournaments that way. I enjoyed the battle system as well and it could use some tweaking. But i loved this game and for years have wanted to see something like it get to see the light of day again.

im in this post and i dont like it
For me the nostalgia is almost entirely rooted in the soundtrack (Leomon's tutorial boss theme goes hard) and the cheesy Engrish voice clips on all of the moves.

6:00 Reminds me of mainline Shin Megami Tensei how this game functions. They expect you to fuse or in Digimons case, DNA Digievolve/Jogress two Digimons together to get a new one. Issue is somehow this game manages to take that concept and make it painful. At least in SMTs case, you can jump around on upgrading/downgrading based on materials fused. This game its always a downgrade which means more grind...yipee 😭

this game was easy if you train too hard, there is a hard mode romhack, 14:15 you can get that chest by opening it from an angle, traps aint too bad if you just upgrade your tank to see where they are, dealing with traps is a different story.

Digimon world 2 is like that 1 big guilty pleasure for me.
I know its shit and has awful implementation of its ideas…
but I dunno man I find the DNA digivolution idea such a cool idea for the time with the skill transfer etc to make your perfect movesets and having stronger mons especially if you merge 2 digimon that have been merged many time already.
Its something I wish they’d try again and improve upon (exp boost for example for digimon that have digivolved to catch em up to where they were before.
Its biggest issue though its the speed of it all I agree. That is so unforgivable for this game and it makes you appreciate the speed up function of an emulator even more.

Digimon World 1 is still my favorite DW game of the PS1 days. Even with the newer one with improved mechanics I still go back to this classic.
Especially after learning all the ins and the outs that make the game incredible. The pre-rendered backgrounds and the way you move around in the world is best.
And it’s based off of the original V-Pet which is where most of its mechanics is from.
With Digimon World 2, even with the strategy guide it did take me time to beat the game. Despite the many headaches I had to go through it with I got my Veemon to Imperildramon and beat the game. Agumon was my starter.
The bugs sucked especially Return and Memory.
Even still I love this game. It was an odd game, but I wouldn’t mind a remastered with fixes to the speed of the game.
And never got the hidden Digi Beetle parts which you need to talk to certain NPCs 99 times to get each of the parts. So tedious.
I wouldn’t mind playing it again with a different team.

To be fair, the game at this point is 20+ years old, about 24 years and 2 months to be more specific which really goes to show how much of a 2 and a half decade gap the PS1 era of games are to the PS5 (or even the PS4).
Playstation 1 and 2 definitely had plenty of gems and i would say Digimon world 2 is just an example of dungeon-like play with 3D graphics before things were perfectly refined.
Plus how the Digimon brand wanted to focus more on trying different things which i felt was one of its strong suites since they came out with alot of stuff that may of not been good per-say, but likely were amongst some of the flops to lead to other things refining those genres in other ways by building off whatever it failed at.
Now a days, games have so much power put behind them so they would need to rebuild plenty of PS1 and 2 era games from scratch to actually be able to interact with the capabilities later gaming hardware can put out to result in a massive speed up. Even showing how many conviences many games get as a norm these days were not exactly present in those more arcadic times...Such as how some more recent titles can get flipped off if they have a large `open world` like game and they decide NOT to include a fast travel feature.
Either way, if we had more dungeon crawlers made in a similar motif as digimon world 2, i would likely find them interesting, such as some other PS2 and PSP titles like Guided Fate Paradox, Zettai hero project, the pokemon mystery dungeon series, because those were always a fun examples of what were the percursors to what were rogue-likes in general, before they went 100% in full swing with meta progression and reset on entry progression based elements.
But seriously, at how he pointed at the `slow animations` for attacks, this is more of a example of the attack being qued up and then firing it off, just like how pokemon did it back in the day, which you can really notice the problem even in more recent pokemon games still to this day, since just like certain older yugioh games back on the game boy advance era, they were made to likely do a bunch of checks which resultedi n sluggish parts.
Example: Digimon world 2 had the ability todo things like counter attacks against other enemy actions aka actions that could interrupt your own, so on a Playstation 1 level of clunky hardware, it would take time to process those kinds of things and do something like cancel the animation that was first going to go off and instead play the other one which is just a fine example of how much of a difference designing a game back then was compared to now, especially with what kind of tools and what not are at people`s fingertips where they can likely one man dev team imitations of older games with relative ease now.
