In all honesty and not to offend (Im a Filipino BTW), as a kid from the 90s, I always value Chinese way of sword fighting over the Japanese counterpart. Even the scenes make look hilarious in today's standards, at least there's some movement going on: sword swings, kicks, acrobatic attacks, etc. I would love to see that over Japanese sword fights that only last for 1-2 minutes, intense staring, jarring sword slashes whenever they shout and label their attacks.
This fight is better than some fighting scenes in this day and ages because of all the CG being used and makes it looks so much fake.. losing the beauty of a good swordplay.
@Denis I've been doing fencing for years. Even in a real situation you don't fight like this wether you have an epee, jian or katana or whatever... this scene is silly but fun to watch. Edit: I think what you see in a professional reenactment or in a hema fight is the closest thing to an authentic swordfight you'll ever see.
Why do they always wear their ceremonial clothing? I have never seen this in any other culture. This seems unique to them (as depicted in this film that is).
It's a "Period Film", meaning to say it's set in a historical setting, rather than the modern age. Based on how the clothing looks, I think it's safe to say that the film takes place during the Han Dynasty (around 200 BC to 200 AD). Both China and Japan had a thing for martial arts/sword films set during one of their historical periods.
@@KOBUN40 It does. I used to think I could pretty consistently tell what year (with some error margin) almost any classic kung fu movie I hadn't seen was released based on just watching a fight scene from it, but I felt terribly confused by this one. I simultaneously wanted to say 1969 and 1985 for some reason!
That end though lmao 😂
I love the choreography, cinematogrpahy and yeahhh the "Pink Floyd"ish music score.
4:08 - 4:19............. Now that’s just silly.
I know right. My thoughts exactly.
When it splits him at the end!! 😆
Confirmed. Jian can make your opponent 'splode.
More like split.

@@weikunli1015 That is weird. For some reason it seems like a much older movie than 1980.
