I was sceptical, having played monk in tt before, but wow. With gloves that give you additional d4, flurry of blows hitting twice, on top of regular attacks, and with open palm additional damage, AND scaling unarmed dice, that class becomes a real "death by a thousand cuts situation". Excepts those are no cuts, those are hits by a dumptruck.
I’m playing rogue/monk , absolutely deleting stuff
What gloves are you using?
Timing on that, just looking up monk stuff in prep, uploaded 15 minutes ago
Lmao exactly the same here 😅
I really appreciate this overview! A monk was my favorite in the tabletop so I wondered how well they translated. Thanks for the hard work of putting this together!
It's been rough for us the last playtest
Thank you Larian for showing the monk some love. My favorite archetype to play in rpgs. loved the class in NWN2 and was concerned about d&d 5 rules. I'm having a blast with it so far in bg3.
Same, always nice to a fellow monk enjoyer
The ff14 version is one or my favorites
@@user-pi8pi3wj7h I actually fell in love with the "unarmed monk" archetype from playing it in EverQuest 1.
Glad they buffed the monk a bit, and with the ease of short rests I'm hoping Ki won't be such a big issue.
haven't tried it yet but I did notice an ability that you can use which restores half your ki outside of battles. Might be useful not sure yet.
@@Killer66hitman I think that's made me decide to go down Four Elements subclass then, I saved last night at lvl 3 where I the choice but couldn't decide
Open hand is pretty solid as well, Morty forgot to say but they get wholeness of body at level 6, which give you half your Ki points, heals you and makes that you have one more bonus action for 3 turns, just like a thief, It's pretty busted.
you even get an ability which allows u to restore half of ur ki points
That's only once per long rest.
And finally the Monk overview! Thanks for all the effort you put into these classes ! It is certainly appreciated and well done
My first end character was a monk and 2 levels of tempest cleric domain.. i found the reaction of doing damage after getting hit very handy.
You're just ridiculously good Mort! Its so nice to see your channel finally started to get the recognition that it deserves after all these years
I am actually pretty hyped to try a Dark Urge Monk - always had a blood rage that tried to tame with martial arts and cloisters study but doesn’t work so ventured out to find a way 😂
Could be fun to do a str based monk and add one level in barbarian
Play astarion as monk, it's crazy OP coz he gets 1d10 necro damage every hit in act 3 with certain choice
I was just thinking that its about time Faerun gets introduced to Ansatsuken lol
As a Gith monk I roleplayed that there exists a sect of Gith on Faerune that have the belief that to properly fight the mindflayers one must put their whole body into battling them.
Id like to think that their motto/mantra is "Steel and Silver will fail, we shall not."
Their créche would be in the ruins of an old monastery and using the old texts left behind the Githyanki would adopt the martial arts due to the deadly potential these attacks provide.
Awesome vid, I've been playing Monk and been having an absolute blast so far
I'm going Monk on my first playthrough, so this is particularly helpful.
Excellent work.
Good job getting this out so quickly. Thank you!
This is great! I was only able to play a bit before I had to work, so now I can watch this before continuing and maybe have a better clue what I'm doing. Thank you so much
I actually made a tiefling monk that had been orphaned by his parents to a monastery because both parents are human and were horrified. Then, the reasoning as to why he left the cloister was because he wanted to explore the outside and what it meant to him after knowing just the cloister for so long. He's kind of like a paladin but a bit less empathetic if that makes sense, a bit more focused on balance rather than straight up goodness.
Mines an Orc, imagining him as having gone from an angry brute searching for violence to a mild mannered adventurer.
I've decided to go with the monk for my first playthrough (was debating between monk and paladin) and decided to go with monk. Was really looking forward to your video.
I remember my first DnD monk...reason he became a adventure was out of boredom and wanted to find a fight so worthy the gods would watch. (His goal was not get gods approval he just wanted to get the gods to watch nothing more nothing less and spoiler he found it when we kill 5 dragons who were trying destroy the realm to remake it and he was taken by gods to fight for them in a arena at end of our DnD game)
Been having a blast roleplaying the avatar! Loving the class in and out of combat!
oh damn imma do that lmao, but theres not really any skins or anything and u cant really go on a ball of air or have the big furry animal
@@abdullahfall1517if u wanna sacrifice the stats u could get a wildspire owlbear
@@Ulcira whats that? the little cub which follows u along?
The ending was great. I am playing a tempest cleric in my game and while watching this I was thinking that it might be good multiclass with monk so it was funny to have you reaffirm that thought right at the end. Good Video :3
Literally was looking for your monk video last night. Didn’t see it but decided to pull the trigger on that class anyway. Let’s see what happens!
Could see quite a few tabletop players adopt "BG3 Style Monks" as a variant rule.
Genuinely seems like a great but still balanced buff to a normally extremely love or hate class.
BG3 in general has seen a mild power increase for magic, but a major one for martials. Even with it, I'd tone down some elements slightly, particularly if you're not taking the special weapon abilities idea from BG3 (otherwise monk will overshadow other martials)
@@antarath517eh idk playing on tactician currently and so far I have yet to face an enemy (outside of the adamantium forge boss that's meant to be either dealt with slowly and kited, or killed with the hammer) that my gloomstalker5 thief3 laezel didnt kill in one turn her double handcrossbows.
@@The_Yukki Yeah, I'm just saying that monks have definitely been designed around not having the extra boost from weapon skills that other martials got.
Specifically, I'm talking about single class lines, cause multiclass dice dumping builds will always be OP
@@antarath517 Tbh my Lazel build has 99% of it's power from just being lvl 5 gloomstalker and items. Rogue is just there for extra bonus action attack tbh. Though the expertise in SoH for stealing and lockpicking did come in quite useful.
Thanks for showing the later monk subrace goodies - was looking all over for this information.
I was SO excited for monk on release, and I love the gameplay so far! I went 4 elements monk but I might have to play around with the others
I'm loving monk so much right now - i added a palalock and a lore bard to my party. This really lets me benefit from short rests resetting Khi, Oath charges, and lock spell slots. Considering making shadowheart into a war domain cleric to get another heavy armor front liner; as i just learned War Priest charges recharge a bit (not all) on short rests.
I loved playing monks in my table-top AD&D days. In those days, the TV show Kung Fu was still in reruns and I really enjoyed playing the monk along the lines that the main character in that show acted, a spiritual person who was also trained martial artist adventuring in strange lands. In that sense, the old rule set seemed more natural, as monks just got more and better attacks as they leveled up, plus got harder to hit, i.e., in lieu of unarmored defense, they just had a base armor class that improved with level. At the same time, they got mental and physical abilities which seemed to follow with physical and mental training. I say all that to say that the later editions where ki changed monks into magic-channeling people changed the very nature of the class and, in many ways, nerfed it since ki is sparse and the class remains a bit squishy. I'm still excited to try the class out when I get the full version (still waiting since I'm on Mac).
I love the Class Fantasy section in these videos.
It may not come to mind at first thought but Kenshiro (manga character) is a monk since he's a successor to an assassination martial art with 1800 years of history.
Omae wa, mou shinderu!
@@nocteexmortis979Nani!?
The way of the open hand monk in the tabletop ruleset actually does get a one hit kill type of ability at level 17, so you can actually do the "omae wa mo shinderu" thing
That shadow step + invis seems like it would unluck a whole host of opportunities for both in combat and outside combat shenanigans. I've decided on the first playthrough as a warlock pact of the blade, thanks for all the overviews!
Teleports Behind You "Nothing Personnel, Kid."
Yeah my first run that I doing right now is a Shadow monk multiclass with gloom and assassin, Still pretty early on the game but can't wait to see how their frontloaded benefits interact.
Thank you for nother useful guide on this great CRPG!!
After playing the Pathfinder CRPGs for so long, the lack of alignment restrictions is really refreshing!
You should of played DOS2 literal freedom
@@KmartParkingLots I loved DOS2. I can't get enough of this shit. Pillars, Pathfinder, wasteland, DOS. Just keep them coming, baby!
to be fair pathfinder makes up for restricted classes by having a ton of classes
Yeah, I might actually play one now that I don't have to be what I and many others call "lawful stupid" lol
Agreed. I hate being locked into lawfully aligned characters, it’s nice to have a bit more freedom with RP’ing.
I found Seelah in wotr funny too because because shes basically like “see being lawful good doesn’t have to be boring!” Without saying exactly those words 😂
Mooooooooonk! started my run already with it but still...Love your content
Playing a tiefling monk, a race and class I’ve never played before, and I’m having so much fun!
I know it may not synergize very well, but I've been doing a Warlock/Monk hybrid and having a blast. The tadpole things reminded me of the Magatama bugs from SMT: Nocturne, so I've tried to make a Demifiend build. Demonic magic, summons, persuasive skills to emulate negotiations, and hard hittinf unarmed strikes. Been a lot of fun so far, we'll see how it does as I get later into the game.
One more god rejected
That sounds really fun. I love Megaten so maybe I'll try that down the road
Yeeeeeeees I've been waiting for it
Awesome video Mort. I'm curious to see if there's any natural attack/unarmed attack interactions through items or multiclasses
My favorite multiclass was to go barbarian. Danger sense plus rage turned the monk into a good power house if you were ever stuck in a jam. Now that I don't need to focus on str to get rage damage, it should be even better.
I've been waiting for this one. Once I heard monk was in the game I set my sights on using a shadow monk on my first playthrough.
The monk strikes back... and with a flurry of blows, too!
Balance is restored, and finally no BG3 Class is more equal then the others.
(LOL)
Thanks for your videos!
Been waiting on this
So far im having a good time with my monk cleric, the dialogue options are pretty fun.
I really love the monk class in bg3 really amazing.
Amazing video!
Monk is my favorite class, so I'm really excited to see it get some good upgrades!
Yeah I'm sold. This class sounds really fun to role play
This class looks SO FUN
Another great video and thank you so much for sharing it with the gaming community. And I can't wait to get my hands on the game, even though I have to wait until September, because I am playing on PS5.And I was thinking of playing a dual wielding Shadow monk ranger,so what do you think,I would like your in put thank you in advance
Yeah you could do it
Monk has ALWAYS been my fav class. Just becasue of the idea behind it honestly.
so when they do it right im in heaven. lol
Monk is my favorite class in tabletop version, especially when I can Kamehameha the enemy or Avatar-ed the enemy. Too bad Sun Soul isn't available for BG3.
Wait for either the Definitive edition, or fingers crossed an expansion or 2 in the form of act 4 or 5 giving us 4 levels each act. 🤞
Or Modders to make it.
I am basically trying to be a Jedi that I played in a DnD campaign irl. I chose monk and subclass warlock the great one. Seemed to work well
@@roninhare9615modders will make it first. Some madlad made monk with all the bg3 subclasses+kensei+mercy+long death for the last early access patch.
I would have appreciated a overview of the 4 elements Regardless of them sharing abilities with other classes
They have done a really good work on monk! They feel super good! nyway in the other video I wrote wrong my question for you, do you know if *eldritch smite* from the eldritch invocation is in the game ? Thank you in case you can help me
The base class was hugely buffed by removing several abilities from being unarmored. Makes multiclassing with monk go from mediocre to amazing. Especially with the Tavern Brawler feat being OP.
The quarterstaves/ staffs in this game slap so hard. You'd be surprised how many wizard casting sticks are better than the greatswords.
I love the idea of a monk 11 /druid 1 - just for the Shillelagh cantrip
For style reasons? or would it be strong?I would think that Shillelagh wouldn't scale at all if only Druid 1, right? For that matter I'm not even familiar if it scales _normally._
Even waiting two years for this
Thank you
I really hope we get the Way of the Kensei subclass option from the table top.
I have been playing monks sense 2e. Love my glass canons.
BG3 is my first ever CRPG, and I chose a Half-Orc Monk as my first character. I'm barely 2 hours into the game so far, and still getting to grips with it (I'm playing on PS5) but my character, Tau, looks the business! I'm very happy with my choice, and will come back here a few times to get a better understanding of the choices open to me as I progress. Thanks for the useful information!
Wow I’m surprised you chose monk for a first play.
On my third play through and it’s been my favourite class so far I think.
I think a good reason to go monk is that none of the 10 companions are one. Kind of missing out on some neat stuff otherwise. I suppose it's not really _content,_ but it's _kind of_ minor content, still something to experience.
While there are other classes also missing, something like a paladin or sorcerer probably isn't to special compared to other classes. Although maybe I'm wrong since one could argue the same about the monk maybe.
Shadow monk sounds just like a ninja, I bet you could do a cool roleplay as a ninja from a far off land that washed ashore and has no way home.
In every souls game (I wish I could do it in Sekiro too) I played my first character as a naked guy punching shit to death.
The fact that there's an entire class about doing this is, weirdly enough, making me NOT want to play this, so I have no idea what I want my first character to be :(
Make a wizard/ sorcerer type that uses only punches and don't use any spells other than buffs! :)
Seeing the background footage using a Githyanki Monk makes me wish Githzerai made it into the game. Dak'kon was an awesome companion.
Didn't know monks were like this. I mainly play JRPGs and monks in those games are more of a brawler type.
With some magic items you can kinda make that work. Late into chapter1 you can get gloves that set your dexterity to 18. Which let's you rework your character stats to be focused on str and wisdom instead of dex and wisdom for ac.
Combined with tavern brawler fest that let's you add double your str to attack and damage and you'll be hitting pretty hard.
Edit: Nvm, scratch that seems like Larian hardcoded monk's extra features to be dex only. Bonus action unarmed strike doesn't scale with str even if it's higher than dex, same for flurry of blows and stunning strike damage.
I was going to go Bard but a Baki Hanma build sounds pretty cool.
I can't wait for homebrew classes :)
Your logo reminds me of those collectible skulls in N64 Banjo Kazooie
Not played DnD or Balder’s Gate before but a Gloom Stalker + Shadow Monk Wood Elf seems like it might be a cool choice.
I would LOVE if they added the Way of the Ascendant Dragon subclass to this.
What is the exact wording that defines a "monk weapon" in the game? Is it just a weapon that you are proficient with? If so, does that mean I could use a Dwarf Monk and wield a Warhammer with no drawbacks?
Will you be making updates to the other class guides to include the full release information? Such as fir the higher levels and missing subclasses as they are implemented?
Probably not, wasnt the purpose of the videos to begin with, and they didnt change the others nearly as much
@@MortismalGaming
They didn't change much, but they did get 7 new levels, and some new sub classes.
Not a lot of info out there yet about the classes beyond what was available in EA, and the game doesn't let you read ahead what you will receive (these are times I miss game manuals).
A short review or ranking of the subclasses compared to each other comes to mind.
What armor are you wearing at 9:23 I've been trying to find a good set for monk but I don't know where to look, if you need a conformation where im at, Im currently at the last light Inn I think its called
I know this isn't a Monk Question, but I can't find the answer anywhere.
AT what difficulty do Friends & Charm backfire? Normal? Tactical? really wish the tool tip was clearer what is meant by "higher difficulties"
I was waiting for this! After some research I'm totally making a Ninja: 1 Level of Rogue for Expertise, then 7 Levels of Shadow Monk, then the rest Rogue Assassin.
Might want to squish gloomstalker ranger in there too, they are the "assassin" themed subclass for rangers.
im actually trying todo a solo run with unarmed heavy armour tavern battle master....so far its been yeetin people or erasing goblins with my palm
I was hoping for Sunsoul as an option, that's the monk I was playing in 5e.
Larian said at the last Panel form Hell that any weapon a monk is proficient in is considered a Monk Weapon, so I have been thinking about a fighter 4 (Battle Master) Monk 8 weilding a Glaive and taking the Polearm Master feat, then the Sentinel Feat and be the ultimate battlefield controller with multiple atracks with reach from the polearm, potentially many AoO in a round from Polearm Mastery and Sentinel, and flurry of blows. This is dependent on Larian being truthful and letting me use a glaive as a monk weapon, though.
For the Battlefield Master manuevers, I'd take some combination of menacing attack, perry, riposte, sweeping attack, and trip attack.
But if BG3 doesn't let me use the Glaive and flurry of blows, than this build isn't as good. So I'll have to see.
attack of opportunity uses reaction, normally you could do max 2 per round
flurry of blows is only usable immediately after an attack action on your turn, the additional attacks are unarmed strikes
IDk how that works my man. I have been trying to use greatswords as my main weapon but it doesnt seem to proc the unnarmed attack. Event thought i have proficiency
Any weapon proficiency you have can be considered a monk weapon yes HOWEVER any weapon that have the two handed or heavy tag are no go. So... no you can't punch people while using a greatsword or Glaive, but can still use the rather decent versatile weapons, like longsword, Warhammers and spears if you have the proficiencies for it.
@@jonhmata Does long spears work too?
@@MenteSanJogoSalvo Spear and Tridents can be used as they are considered versatile so can be used one handed, you can't use it with Pikes, Halberds and glaives cause those are only two handed
Would multiclassing 2 levels into fighter be a good bet? To get action surge and weapon proficiencies? I feel like action surge on a Way of the open hand Monk would go absolutely crazy
Fighter multiclasses well with everything to some degree thanks to action surge so the answer there is always yes
Monk 7, Fighter 5 wouldn't be good? I mean, to get action surge and extra attack from Fighter.
This way you could hit, hit again and then use ki to hit again?
Monk in heavy armor with war cleric multiclass , is it a good idea ? Or multiclass with barbarian ?
I get that a monk should have high dex and wis for that synergy of offense and defense, my way of the four elements monk has currently 18 dex and 16 wis BUT I couldnt stop staring at that bar brawler perk feat wondering how I could make a str monk work. Im wondering if it would be worth going lower dex and\or wis and wearing armor because while im looking at my level 4 monk all I lose is my defense from wis and movement speed if I were to equip armor, I still have all of my offensive capabilities. Also, when looking at my defense while wearing studded leather armor (base 12 light armor, im also human so proficient with it) I only lose 1 ac point, if I had +1 studded armor it would be equivalent to my 18 dex 16 wis at 17 total AC. I dont know how things are going to scale going forward with equipment or class abilities but It seems very viable from what im looking at.
For reference the bar brawler feat adds double your str to dmg and attack rolls (edit: for unarmed strikes, improvised weapons...and one other thing). I understand I likely wouldnt have the same dex for ac while wearing light armor because it would no longer be my primary stat, but if your human you start out with light armor then at levels 4 and\or 8 you grab bar brawler and the medium armor feat. Would love any feedback on this.
Edit: Nvm, scratch that seems like Larian hardcoded monk's extra features to be dex only. Bonus action unarmed strike doesn't scale with str even if it's higher than dex, same for flurry of blows and stunning strike damage.
Late into act1 you can get gloves that set your dex to 18 and you can set your str to 20 without spending a single asi into it through either temporary consumables or permanent ones(I'll say where to get them at the end so you dont get spoiled if you dont want to.)
If you dont mind respeccing. Start as either drow or wood elf. Drow for hand crossbow proficiency, aka best weapon in the game, woodelf for more speed and proficiency in long bow(and long sword if the wording of monk weapons is to be believed any weapon you're proficient I'm and doesnt have heavy property can be a monk weapon and thus used with dex.)
Start with standard dex wis build. And when you get the gloves that set your dex to 18 respec into str wis build. Granted that locks you into using those single gloves for the rest of the game, or having to respec.
That build will be my next playthrough.
Spoilers bellow.
You can get +1 to any stat from letting the hag in chapter 1 live, if you start with 17 str that'll give you permanent +1.
In chapter 2, you can have astarion drink blood from a weirdo drow alchemist who in turn will give you a potion that permanently increases your str by +2. Voila you are at 20 without any asi spent into str.
I remember monk being OP in og Neverwinter nights
Good show sir =)
What lvl do u get Ki resonation at Mort?
Still lvl 6? I didn't see the icon for it.
Way of Mercy would be a nice addition.
I’ve come across a few items that are clearly monk focused and I just only made it to the start of act 3
This video didn’t answer my question. I would like to play a quarterstaff monk but none of the subclasses seem to utilise the weapon. Also, I hoped that strength 16 would be useful since the ingame character sheet seems to imply that Monk prioritises STR/DEX…
Ive made a monk/barbarian (17 str/16 wisdom/14 con). I know it works on table top because ive played one, but it seems no one is making a monk/barbarian on BG3 and I cannot find a way to optimize it nor any tips about it.
So basically you rage and attack w/weapon on your 1st turn. Then you attack with a weapon and flurry of blows.
It seems that str applies to weapon attack but it does not apply on flurry tho my str is higher than my dex.
Anyone?
Flurry might be hard coded to be dex based? I'd have to see for myself. If that's the case boy is that disappointing.
How does it compare to what you think of the Pathfinder video games monk?
Since all weapons with proficiency count as monk weapons - would flurry of blows and other class mechanics work with dual scimatars or a longbow? Sounds like a fun ranger multiclass option then!
The monk weapon description excludes two-handed and heavy weapons. For stuff like Deflect Missiles you should require a free hand, so dual-wielding shouldn't work well with a monk. And bonus unarmed attacks require you being in melee range, so currently I'd say the quarterstaff or longsword seem to be the best options as far as I understand it.
The skills in the Elemental are considered spells? You can't use them while in Rage?
recently started a dark urge monks because i thought it would provide interesting flavour RP wise
Has anyone tested whether or not the 4 elements disciplines work while you are in a barbarian rage?
I wish they added the Monk of the Long Death subclass, really cool roleplay potential. Maybe in a DLC.
Do monks get the increasing hit die for hand-to-hand hits as in the tabletop? Like going from d4 to d6 to d8 etc?
Yes, but it takes time and levels, can’t remember which tho.
What Larian games should I play before Baldur's Gate 3?
Been goin a str barb monk bc i love my brawlers in games. DnD/Turn based isnt my usual thing, but hearing such good things about BG3 and hearing the shenanigans my friends would get into, i picked it up for a 4p playthrough and am now wanting to do singleplayer so i can actually hear the story!
Cannot wait to roll monk
Fighting with the power of anime in every kick and punch.
Nudist monk is the build ill use for my next playthrough lol
Does anyone know if you can find a lightsaber, I mean Sunblade in BG3?
hey mort, do you recommend going an origin or custom character for your first playthrough?
One of the devs mentionned that it would be better to do a custom character as your first playthrought to experience and learn to know the story characters but anything works its up to you!
