Hard to believe vyv is Adrian Edmondson. In interviews he's quiet, softly spoken, intelligent and aimible. Mind you. Vyvian often hinted at a hidden depth or two. A certain faculty with explosives and engineering, he's the only housemate with a car.
I met him once, very nice guy. Very witty.
I saw him in an episode of Death of Paradise. He was nothing like Vyvyan

I love it how something like the front door exploding is so common in that house, Rik responds in the same way most people would if they found out they were out of milk.
PS To this day, I still can't say "What do you want?" without doing a (poor) impersonation of the way Rik says it to the Postie.

Actually Mike is a stand up comic, that is how they found him. He was doing a routine as the cool guy, so they added that character to the show as the straight man. Works brilliant.
Never cared for his character on the show.
And the part of postie was played by Barry Stanton.
There's anarchic sketch comedy but there have never been too many sitcoms with the same "anything at all can happen at any moment" energy that The Young Ones had. I mean Vyvyan getting decapitated in the very first episode and then clumsily kicking his own head down the train tracks kind of set the tone, but every episode had something hilariously weird and bizarre.
I have to wonder how they came up with the random shit that happened in every episode, the irrelevant matchbox from 'Bambi' springs to mind.
Bambi wasn't the first episode, it was the 7th one and the first of season 2

He is being very 'theatrical' - it's comical because the actor is supposed to be playing a TV postie, but he's acting like he's doing Shakespeare on a stage.

I first watched this show the night it originally aired in late 1982 and my brother and I must have watched them hundreds of times. I still know all the dialogue. It is strange how differently you see things as you get older. I was 10 at the time and took it all entirely at face value (as you do at that age) loving all the slapstick and mayhem. Now though, there are all sorts of amusing satirical barbs and pointed political commentary that I was completely blind to at the time. I now get why my Mum would walk past and chuckle every so often at things I didn't understand.
Looking at it now, Mike is such an odd character. We just accepted him back then, but he was clearly crowbarred in awkwardly but the production team. I know he gets a lot of hate but an uncool, cool short bloke is a funny thing in itself.

though i loved the young ones I thought rick did a great job playing an very annoying obnoxious character. Rick really got on my nerves and still does.
