Favourite Genesis song and was gutted that they didn’t perform it 31/7/92 in Leeds. Phil’s having a bit of a time with it here and can see why they dropped it. Voice killer.
It's not an easy song to sing. I used to do vocals in a Genesis tribute act around the same time, and some nights it was a case of skipping this song for fear of messing up my voice.
@@peteuplink Indeed. It's one of those songs that are a real challenge to sing, but when you sing it - and more importantly - sing it right... it's like watching a rainbow appear.
Phil seems uncomfortable singing this... I remember an interview with Phil for the Invisible Touch Tour him saying he found'Mama' & Tonight, Tonight, Tonight vocally challenging and a strain on his voice perfoming this every night. So i wasn't surprised that Tonight, Tonight, Tonight was shortened and joined to Invisible Touch and Mama was dropped completely. The We Can't Dance Tour was a long tour and Phil was older. But he did perform Mama for the Turn it on Again Tour (much shorter tour ) and the band did lower the Key to save Phil's voice. Tonight was kept the same with Invisible Touch. Amazing Drummer / Singer was Phil 😊
With "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight", the high "Ohh-hoooo" he just points the mic into the crowd for them to si g it, and sings the bridge down an octave. So he did adjustments there, but for "Mama", yeah that's a tough one, and dropping the octave sounds terrible.
You can clearly hear that Phil's voice is not in shape here, he was still recovering from an infection which caused them to cancel the show the week before in Tampa after 2 songs. Also, Tony messes up with the lead sound in the first half, meaning Phil doesn't have a clear pitch reference to tune his own voice against. You can hear that he at least sings slightly less hesitant in the second half when the band is there.
I also saw an interview with Chester and he said that the second half of Tonight was really tough on his wrists as he had to really go for it with all the fills and had to play really hard. He mentioned he sprained his right wrist on the Invisible touch tour in America playing Tonight, and it was the only song on the tour that worried him. So another reason it was scaled back for the latter tours.
Great footage! I can understand now why they dropped it. Phil was really having trouble with the high notes. It’s a shame at the time they didn’t even contemplate lowering the key a half-step.
He did a pretty good job, but it was sensible to drop it considering the long set list that tour. It's in the original key which is pretty up there throughout. The much lower key of recent times gave it a very dark vibe!
Indeed. Not many people are aware of this, but most live performances of this song actually get rid of the last verse before the explosive climax - the only tour which has the complete version of the song is the Mama Tour, its début tour.
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH for posting this! 👏👏👏🌟🌟🌟 I was at this concert and seeing this footage of, what I thought, a MAGNIFICENT show of my favorite band, is PRICELESS ! Thank you! No one around me knew there were technical issues. We just all thought it was a variation to the recording just as most live performances are. No one mentioned or complained of Phil struggling with his voice either. Remember, these were the days before the internet so we didn't have comparisons unless we had access to bootlegs or other live recordings. The video screens was also a new thing and we were thrilled! So cool! Like watching a movie! My seats weren't great either so those screens were an extra special treat for me. 🥰 I read your replies to others that this is all you have but I'm crossing fingers that someday you will come across more footage of this show. THANK YOU AGAIN! For the video and all the interesting information regarding the performance and the song. HUGE KUDOS & HUGS ❤💥🤜🏻🤛🏼
I only know of this version and the one from Houston, and in both cases Tony messes up the sounds all the time during this song. Somehow it didn't work out… If you listen to when the drums come in, he plays the koto sound by mistake and then comes in with the right sound after, and also on the "off bar".
This is utterly fantastic!!😁 You said this was for Genesis fans. And I am one of the hardcore ones.😁 Thank you so much for posting this. For years all we had was the crappy audience recording. But this is top-notch in every way. Also quick note. I can see why they dropped the song now. Phil was struggling for some reason through the whole song. He was having a hard time with the highs.
@@willyc.8141 Some collectors believe that Like It Or Not was actually played at Nassau Coliseum, one of the shows filmed for the Three Sides Live film, although no tapes has shown up to confirm or deny this. There's a few shots in the film where a printed setlist can be made out on Tony's rig and it appears that Like It Or Not is written on the setlist. Typically, Like It or Not and Sarah Jane traded spots on the setlist, which makes a full Nassau tape an interesting proposition, plus what's circulating of Nassau from the TSL video and album actually isn't half bad in comparison to most of the shows of the NA leg of the tour. It's pretty cool that Toronto's Like It or Not was filmed, looks as good as it does, and is circulating online at all to be honest.
I saw this tour in Washington, DC earlier this same month, and this was the one song I wanted to hear more than anything. Sadly, they didn’t perform it that night. But as it was my first time seeing Genesis live in concert, I forgave them and had a BLAST anyway. 15th row, dead center on the floor. Slept out all night just to get tickets. Those were the days… 🔥🎸🥁
Fantastic!!!! I’ve finally got to see the footage of this song!!!! I knew it would have great graphics as it showed them in the invisible series notebook!!! Thank you!!! Awesome
I was there, fantastic show as always!! Unfortunately because of my age it was the first time I saw them live but me and my sister have traveled extensively to see them since, including Helsinki Montreal and the left coast USA and the last two shows at the O2 in London
@@studioannur221 That's right. I remember listening to a bootleg of a Pink Floyd show which also took place in Foxborough in May 1994 and because of the freezing weather at that time, David Gilmour wished the audience a "merry early christmas". xD
I've been wondering for a very, VERY long time what were the screen visuals during this song for the 1992 tour. Now I finally know! Interesting choice of using a keylock! The only other video footage I had seen of this song being performed before was from the Opening Night documentary that showed a very short snippet of it being performed on the very first show of the tour, but the screens only showed the cameras without any effects, which matches the visuals on this during that bit of the song.

I don't know if more was recorded - just all I have. There's at least one other video from this show on YT that I think was a broadcast. Prob transmitted via satellite for that - sometimes those "satellite backhauls" could be recorded by someone w/ a huge 80s style satellite TV dishes. Dunno though. All i got.
@@DavidLightman5 hi David many thanks for uploading this rare gem , I’ve been collecting genesis videos for 40 years built up a great collection & always nice to find something new that’s essentially over 30 years old, have you got anything else from genesis Collins that as not been seen? Once again thanks Phil
Good they ended up replacing this tune in the setlist. However, as a singer, I TOTALLY respect what Phillip performed here; I think he kicked ass and pulled it off quite well for a 40+ year old man! God bless Phil Collins, I say!
Wow, thanks for the upload, I just realized my first genesis show was the day after this, montreal may 29.... Poor collins, struggling with the voice, and the lead synclavier sound, probaby a bad midi transmission, I can understand their decision, it must had been quick and easy to throw mama out the window......
"Dreaming While You Sleep" was also dropped after the gig in Pittsburgh (26 May, 1992) and would only reappear during the UK tour in October/November 1992 and "Throwing It All Away", which was initially an encore (between "Invisible Touch" and "Turn It On Again"), was promoted into the regular set.
Yeah, the band is a little bit out of shape here, with some keyboards problem at the start and on the bridge Mike too is playing the single notes at the first part too much before the right time The solo it's good enough but rusty compared to the past

Amazing footage, thanks for that! But now I can understand why they dropped it from the set list. Phil was really struggling with his voice.
Phil just couldn't sing it original key anymore as his voice was aging. Genesis should have dropped it in key even in 1987 and 1990.
