I think what many people are missing with this new "Mazda 2" is that it is merely a tick box excerise for Mazda in Europe. It allows them to sell a full hybrid (without any investment) keeps their emissions figure in check. It hasn't replaced the current bespoke Mazda 2 which may be getting on but is still excellent. I have owned my 2018 Mazda 2 for three and a half years and I'm still not bored of it. So it must be good. Some of my cars have barely lasted a year before being moved on. Think I'll wait though for Mazda's new in-house 2 or possibly just replace it with a 3. At least Mazda have chosen a good car to re-badge with the Toyota Yaris.

Agree 2 is a great car we just replaced our 2017 with a Corsa e because a small all electric works for us but while it’s a nice car, gets off the line quicker, it’s not built as well or as much fun on the road especially in the corners. Maybe look at the CX60 to replace our CRV.

2021 Yaris owner here (I bought one of these as a daily in order not to add too many miles to my GR Yaris). But I have to say, while I bought it almost as a bit of a joke I'm glad to say I've been pleasantly surprised overall.
Firstly, you really nailed this car, Tish. You got all the main points. Yes, it's really fuel efficient. I fill up about once every two months (I don't commute, just a daily runaround with an average of about ten miles per day). The handling is okay, but encounter any rough patches at high speed and the car becomes unsettled which reduces confidence, especially in corners. I'm thinking of upgrading suspension. Will have to see what is possible for this small car...
One big negative I will have to say is don't bother spending or upgrading trim level for a bigger screen or the infotainment system; it's awful. Really unintuitive. I've had mine for almost a year, and it's one of those irritating things I kept forgetting to sit down with and try and figure out. The menus aren't logically laid out and have made me want to scream. If I use Andriod auto or Apple carplay, and listen to something on my phone, it'll keep coming back on every time you start the car. Really annoying, and I gave up trying to stop the music with the screen which means stopping it with my phone. So I always wait for the music to come on before I move off, so I can turn it off via my phone. Yes, there's a menu option I once found to stop it doing that... it didn't work. I now wiped my phone from the car's memory and only connect via Bluetooth. Absolute pants!
The boot is small, true, I thought I'd be able to use the backseats for shopping as well, but the car has infuriating alarms and bleeps that grow the longer you don't fasten seatbelts in the rear. That happens even if you only have a bit of shopping on the rear seats. But there's a hack you can do to turn off the alarm, which is to attach and undo the seatbelt in its buckle multiple times (around 6 or 7) in rapid succession.
Around town, the hybrid tech will change your driving style, as the longer you drive it, the more you'll want to play the game of using the battery as much as possible without turning the ICE on. If you get good at this, you'll really get insane MPG. You can use the battery for a little push here and there, and then coast along until you need to stop again.
But something I have to add that's a bit of an owner's secret, and that is the shocking top speed. While it may have a really slow 0-60 time, if it does have a top speed... I haven't found it!
I live near a big motorway, with a long downhill section of several miles to boot. The first time I drove this thing I was headed down said road and didn't understand why everyone was going so slowly. Then I looked down at the speedo and suffice it to say I was well into 3 figures...!
I'm not joking when I say this thing has the aerodynamics of a Lamborghini or something. It can reach stupid speeds and the nice thing is, because the engineers at Toyota seemed to have really worked on the aero (for fuel efficiency?), you don't feel the speed at all. It's so stable. You'd need to be driving a car many tens of thousands of pounds more expensive to get stability like that. Mad I know. But that's where the CVT helps, because the engine shuts down when you're not pressing the gas, and you just coast along so smoothly whereas with manuals or automatics, the faster you go the higher the engine revs. Not so with this.
I now really get it about CVTs. While I wouldn't take my Yaris to the track, I can really see why Toyota use them in almost everything. There's a reason this was car of the year.
Wish they would give us the new Impreza. It has a sport CVT ( Subaru won't use the CVT name ) or a manual. And I like the styling. Oh and can we have the BRZ back as well 🙂
I don't know what car you were driving, but I have a Ford fiesta 1.5 ST, I test drove this and it certainly isn't slow by any means and still does 70mpg? The electric motors and engine combined with the Ecvt (not a CVT, in fact nothing alike) makes city accelerations up to 50mph brilliant! I mean, Having a 1 gear automatic with no clutch, no jerking, and gearbox that allows the engine to run at the perfect RPM continuously which means your always in the powerband! honestly I was that impressed I have ordered one. If you don't like it, don't buy it its that simple! As for the infotainment, just plug your phone in, let it automatically connect to android auto or apple carplay and thats it, it's that simple.

I am not a huge fan of driving manual despite passing my test 3 months ago, the thought of rolling back and stop starting in town really gives me anxiety, so my next car will definitely be an automatic hybrid/eletric so long as I can afford it! This seems like an amazing upgrade and I love Toyota Yaris's so I am actually very glad that Mazda decided to go with this collaboration as they couldn't have picked a better car!
Yeah it was the same with the older Aygo/Justy/Sirion etc. Solid value and alot of car for the money, especially second hand.
Have you had any problems with the 12 volt battery going dead ? Apparentley , quite a few people have.
Really enjoyable video, thank you. At 9.40 I always to defend this little car, when testers suggest 'engine struggles', when pressed, its just designed to be in the efficiency zone, if they wanted more 'go', it would be at the expense of economy..which arter all is the cars aim. Good review 👍
had this toyota yaris since september to teach people to drive and in the car 20-25 hours a week for tution then extra for travel and fill up one every 1.5 weeks car always above 85mpg average every time i fuel up i reset it. flawless car.

Driving a yariss cross about 50% of my driving is electric and I get 60-70 mpg, love it.
I got a GR Sport Yaris Cross, it is brilliant! My sister has the 2020 Mazda2 (normal petrol) such a good car, manual and great sound system! In both we get close to 70mpg !!

Love all your reviews. I have a red Yaris just like this and was so interested to learn of the Mazda re-badging. Think the steering wheel is the same between both. As you say, both are great all-rounders. I actually think this is close to being a perfect car.

@@AutoSocialUK I think it might just be the badge! I can’t tell if there are any subtle differences in body or dash display. I’ve seen some crazy high MPG for short journeys experimenting with B mode etc., but I frequently average between 70 and 80 MPG for short city journeys.
More perfect than the Yaris in my opinion simply because you can get this with 15 inch wheels so the ride quality will be far better. Bigger alloys are for silly fashion reasons only in most cars but you feel every bump in the road. Ive driven them so I know and I prefer comfort over trendy any day.
@@oddities-whatnot That’s interesting and confirms what I suspected. I was considering upgrading my Yaris to the 17-inch wheel version (and there’s a new 18-inch version!) but decided to stick with 16-inch which is a very comfortable drive. Good though that Mazda offers 15!

Another great and comprehensive review Tish, thank you. Badge engineering has been going on for many decades with different brands putting the badge on to all intents and purposes identical cars. If I were to consider a purchase between the Toyota and the Mazda I would first look up the local dealer ratings for each brand as that could help with my decision making. These are great for a town and mid distance car but a better all rounder would currently steer me to the new Fabia, OK it's not as economical on shorter runs and does not have the same standard tech but is more versatile for longer journeys and is available with a manual gear box, I'm not a fan of CVT but I have limited experience of them. Maybe I'll test this model or the Toyota at some point to get a personal perspective of the CVT used here.
Well worth a test drive Anthony, and don’t worry it’s not a CVT in the traditional sense.
It does mimic CVT behaviour however it’s very rare if at all that you experience that rubber banding that plagues CVT’s due to the hybrid systems batteries which mean you almost always have enough go to accelerate to any road speed without having to put your foot down to accelerate quickly enough.
Exactly! It's not a CVT. Toyota uses a hybrid powertrain that has no gears and it can do whatever the computer wants it to do.. it usually sounds like a CVT it can sound like an automatic with gears and some Toyotas do that with the manual mode. Also when you step down on the throttle it feels like it's downshifting the same way an automatic with gears does

I currently drive a 2014 citroen c1 as a first car, which was developed by Citroen, Peugeot and Toyota. However they look completely different from each other which lets you tell them apart. However with Mazda and Toyota cars all looking so good, I don't really mind the small differences in looks.
Great review Tish. But what I'm stuggling to understand is the difference to decide whether it would be Toyota or Mazda I would buy? Are the prices the same and if so, I'm not sure why you would pick Mazda instead of going straight to Toyota who have more options to choose from? Doesn't seem enough USP's to sway anyone to Mazda except brand or dealership loyalty. Any other ideas?
Not sure what it’s like outside of the U.K. but in the U.K. the Toyota network is far bigger which is a huge plus point, and also the Mazda Warranty pales in comparison to Toyota’s let alone their extended Relax Warrant they now do. And the price isn’t hugely different between the brands either.
Brand Loyalty would have to be the only reason for choosing Mazda over Toyota (for this model)
Mazda offer this in “Agile” trim that gives you 15 inch alloys. Its a far better ride quality than Toyota on 16 inch wheels. I tested one today, interior rattled and buzzed a bit on the Toyota because of the firm ride. Very poor for the price. Materials not premium inside the car so a less firm ride in the Mazda will be more forgiving and less chance of panels buzzing over poor surfaces.
70-80 miles per gallon is amazing. I assume those are Imperial gallons that are 20% larger than the US gallon. So, if it were sold here we'd expect 58 to 67 mpg. (check my math?)
These are nice cars but I am disappointed at the lack of the superior interiors that Mazda has had in the past few years that are usually a big step above Toyota, Honda and Nissan. I can only hope that one day these "supermini" cars are more available over here in the US. (I'm in Texas; i know, fat chance they'll sell here in Texas!)
Rebadging is also very common in commercial vehicles.

True. There are so many cross badging, particularly in the Audi-VW group of cars. But I also think this is a smart move on Mazda's part to adopt this car, because there is this myth of Japanese reliability and really it only comes from Toyota.
Mazda's past 100k tend to fall apart, even though they're a ton more fun to drive than most Toyotas, and Subaru in many cases are also not as reliable as they'd have you believe. As I said, this Japanese reliability really just comes from Toyota, so this car will help to boost Mazda's reliability ratings, ironically.
@@lapamful This cross badging is also cheaper for manufacturers to comply with European emission regulations (even though I’m fully against them), for example Suzuki. Suzuki rebadged the Toyota Corolla Touring Sports and the RAV4 Prime (in the European market at least), cos I guess it’s gonna cost them a lot of money for them to make a completely different vehicle that complies with EU regulations.
Isn't it actually the other way round? Ford are developing all VWs commercial vehicles now, in return Ford get access to VWs electric car platforms.

However, I did hear that Ford is gonna make a crossover based on one of VAG’s platforms.
Something I’m not getting is the dials. Yaris has the pods, the car on the Mazda websites has the pods, but year 22 second hand Mazda 2s and this have the old fashioned dials
If the Mazda trim levels are anything like the Toyota trim levels then the base spec won’t have the binocular style gauges.

Wish we could get this car in the USA.I had a 2012 Mazda 2 Touring.
Bit late to the party here, but my local Mazda dealer claims the agreement between Mazda and Toyota prevents Mazda from making the styling changes it would want, but might happen in future. The substance of the deal is Mazda gains access to Toyota’s hybrid tech, an area where it lags behind its competitors. Enjoying your reviews, keep it up!
@@zaandam0172 makes sense if Mazda fell behind on hybrids due to investing in Skyactiv - my partner has a 1.5 diesel CX-3 which gets over 70mpg without trying, but with everything going hybrid/electric they’ll probably no longer fine-tune the current engine range
Great review! But I’m not too sure about this thing, it looks quite out of place in Mazdas line up of cars, doesn’t use a Mazda engine or gearbox and the interior isn’t as nice…. However you did say it handles nice and that’s a Mazda trait so not all bad :)
It’s solely in there for a hybrid in the line-up. Mazda has none.
i went from Audi cars and to be honest this car destroys them you just have to look past the extra bling insides of luxury you are used to.

@@skullft7731 That’s because it’s not a Mazda and they’re not trying to hide that fact.
Also, the interior of a Mazda 2 isn’t anything to write home about. Hard plastics everywhere, extremely basic gauges and a tiny infotainment screen that is controlled by oversized knobs. The Toyota Yaris interior feels roomier, more logically laid out and useful. They’re both city cars. Nothing luxurious to speak of.

Yes, it undercuts the Toyota slightly, they are expensive but can save lots in fuel.

Use the pulse and glide method with a hybrid and smooth acceleration use coasting as much as possible and steady breaking for regeneration. I’ve got a 2020 CHR and I use this method and can get 80mpg and if you want a well built Toyota the CHR is the one to go for but I got mine used 13 months old for the same price as a Yaris with top spec and low miles just an idea if you wanted a higher end car at the same price as a Yaris
I genuinely came on here to pass a short comment; I actually prefer Mazda, over toyota, I feel as if they're more reliable and more trustworthy, i'd definitely prefer to purchase this Mazda2 instead of a Yaris. I think, especially inside, for example the steering wheel, it looks so much more premium too, not to mention the detail in the front headlights/grill plastic etc. I think one of the behind the scenes reasons is it is cost effective, as Toyota, like Nissan, are all "sister manufacturers" if you want to see it like that, it is more cheaper to take the yaris's body and design, and slap the mazda logo on it.

As a new driver I wouldn’t say so, sensors are one of those things that only becomes a deal breaker once you’re used to them ☺️

What trim level did you review ? Is this the 1.5 Hybrid Pure ?
Its the “Agile” trim level with the more comfortable 15inch alloys. Too firm on 16inch and makes the interior buzz and rattle on poor surfaces. Not a lot but its disappointing at this price level. I tested the Yaris version, two different cars and both felt as though the interior was a bit flimsy in parts.

@@AutoSocialUK I've got the 2015 Mazda2 with no hybrid and get 75mpg, so I'd love to borrow a hybrid to see what that could do. I had the Auris hybrid and maxed 91mpg from that once.

@@afcgeo882 Average mpg was 91, believe it or not. Learning to utilise the electric as much as possible. Keeping to roads that were 40mph or less on way to work. Even if I had to use dual carriageway, it would manage 80mpg.
Some help please. Which would you rather go for? The middle grade of the Hyundai i20 premium or the middle grade of the Mazda 2 Hybrid agile?

Isn't the centre airbag actually in the front, coming out of the side of the passenger seat? That's what other reviews have shown.
Just some different bumpers would have made all the difference, just like the steering wheel

Great review overall. Yeah I get that it’s literally a rebadged Yaris with some slightly different material colours and a few design tweaks but the car itself is phenomenal.
I have a GR-Sport Yaris Hybrid in order and drive a Yaris Design Hybrid regularly. They are superb cars, little pricey but still class leading as an all round hybrid and the Mazda will serve people as well as the Toyota variety

I do wonder what means ,,pricey" for you folks, since not one mentioned a price, at least to make one 's opinion. About the car itself, it used to be nicer under real Mazda badge, and not bad either with it's classic atmospheric 1,5 liter engine !
@@victormarian7889 Oh me saying pricey is just comparing it to the opposition. Against its direct rivals this Mazda 2 Hybrid/Yaris Hybrid are on the upper end for RRP. But that’s expected given the tech and level of kit that comes with.
I previously owned a 2015 Mazda 2 in 115 Sport Nav trim. Was a great little motor, very different from the the Hybrids mind. That 1.5 coupled with the six speed box was fun! 🙂
But as its a hybrid, does it not have a smaller tank then an ICE version for instance, so range probably isn't too dissimilar!?? Great video Trish!
Surprisingly not. The hybrid batteries are located under the rear seats and don’t encroach onto other things like the fuel tank.
You will get 450 miles to a brimmed Tank in the Mazda 2 Same as the Yaris. 🙂

@@AutoSocialUK deal 😂 I always try to help folk out as I’ve been a long time fan of both Toyota and Mazda (my last 6 cars have come from them. A MR2 Roadster TF edition, MPS MK2, Mazda 2 115 Sport Nav, Mazda 3 165 Sport Nav, Corolla GR Sport Hybrid and on order a Yaris GR Sport Hybrid 😂) and if I see anybody even half interested I’ll always try to encourage them to check out the products especially now Mazda have their own version of the Yaris 🙂

I hate to break it to you Tish, but the real Mazda 2 doesn’t have any high grade interior materials either. There’s not much of anything squishy in there other than that steering wheel. What’s worse, it gets Mazda’s horrible infotainment system.
Also, the transmission in this car is not a CVT, but rather an eCVT, which is to say that it still has no shifting, but actually uses gears (a planetary gear setup). That type of a transmission is the most reliable type there is.
Have you sat in the current Audi A1? A so called 'premium' B segment product. You'll be struggling to find any high grade plastics in its cabin. Even the VW group biased UK motoring press have picked up on it. In reality the the Mazda 2's plastics are pretty good for the class.
Errm, planetary gear is old tech of Toyota. eCVT is just a small electric motor which acts as a gearbox.
@@tebitan3780 No. Toyota’s synergy drives use two to three electric motor generators and connect them to a planetary gear set that’s used as a transmission, to switch between the engine, electric motor, drive and charge modes. That planetary gear set is called the eCVT. You cannot use an electric motor as a transmission. There are videos on YT that show this in detail. eCVTs have been used by all Toyota hybrids since the first Prius, although the drive motors and transmissions have been upgraded and enlarged since then. Toyota just released a new system that simply connects a turbo engine to an electric motor and a regular automatic transmission, all in one line on its big pickup and SUV in America. That system is more traditional and doesn’t give you a lot of fuel savings, but does give you a good power boost.
@@jdmguy44 You can’t say that Mazda’s interior is “premium” simply because some luxury car maker decided to put a non-premium interior into one of theirs. That makes them both non-premium.
@@afcgeo882 my point is there is really very little difference between the cabin materials of this Mazda 2 hybrid/Toyota Yaris and a so called premium product like the Audi A1. I'm not suggesting the 2 hybrid/Yaris are premium but I also don't buy into the fact that an Audi A1 is premium either. Its just a slightly tarted up Fabia/Polo with a premium badge.
Here in Ireland we just call them hybrids not strong hybrids. Some can even go for 50miles now on just the battery. PHEVS are normally more expensive the Hybrids so should it not be milds hybrids then hybrids the PHEVs?
What hybrid can go 50 miles on electric?

@@afcgeo882 I guess technically if you insist on not plugging it in and just charge it by itself, it can act as a hybrid. Just the efficiency would be terrible as you are carrying a battery which weights a few hundred kilos. It may even drinks more than a pure petrol model.

I would choose the Yaris over this Mazda because it has a five year warranty, this only has a three year warranty.

Firstly, what a load of rubbish when she talks about flooring it. If a driver really feels the need to do that, of course It will make more noise as its revving high and its a three cylinder engine. Hey, try it in the last shape Yaris hybrid with the CVT, it was a four cylinder and boomy as you like if you floored that one ! Nasty engine. Remember, this new Mazda/Yaris version has the E CVT, so no steel belt either for much more responsive control. Seems like she expects this car to sound and behave like something else with a bigger engine as she says it struggles. NO IT DOESNT. Its perfectly adequate for its designed purpose. Its not an M4 is it ! As for saying the gearbox gets notchy, what on earth ? Its an E CVT not a MANUAL ! Unbelievable nonsense.
Secondly this Agile model will have a much more comfortable ride on those 15 inch wheels than the larger alloys on the Yaris, which I have to add after testing the Yaris twice, it rattles inside because the ride is too firm. Very poor for a car costing well over 20k. More often than not, bigger wheels are not better. Its a bit sad when so called style seems preferable to ride quality these days. Years ago most cars had a comfy ride because they weren’t silly fashion statements like most cars today. Car manufacturers seem obsessed with pretentious styling. I laughed at the “classic Mazda” handling bit. Its a Yaris with a Mazda badge as they needed a low emission car in the range or they were going to face financial penalties.

A lot of people are missing the point regarding wheels. Ive tested the Yaris hybrid and the ride is firm because it has 16 or 17 inch wheels. These 15 inch wheels will give a much more comfortable ride. People are obsessed with the look of a car instead of its comfort or ability. Fashion victim muppets.
@@oddities-whatnot My point was that the Yaris wheels look nicer with the machined face, after that it is just physics, 15" wheels have a higher tyre sidewall and a softer ride, the lower the profile the harder the ride, personally I think 16" is the sweet spot, the high sidewall and narrower tyre of the 15" have more roll and therefore can be prone to edge wear more than the wider lower profiles, particularly where you have a lot of winding roads and roundabouts. That's not really anything to do with "fashion victim muppets".

As a Yaris, yes it's a good looking and efficient car, but as Mazda 2 it's just a shame. It doesn't fit in the design lineup at all. I understand why they do it, but in terms of emotion and brand identity, I just can't get over it...

Sad to see Mazda do this because the last Mazda two was a great little car. It could be worse do if they brought over some third world thing like Nissan did years ago with the terrible Micras that actually replaced a good Micra but the Mirca is back to being a good car again even if its not really a small car anymore. Nissan really need to make a smaller car and call it the Micra and maybe rename the replacement for the current Micra the Almera or the Sunny.

Why not save the extra it would cost for one of these and buy a Dacia model with LPG as it will cost 77p per litre to run on it instead of petrol which is costing around the £1.90 per litre. who would be saving the most money on fuel ?

Why buy the Mazda with the 3 year warranty when you can buy the Toyota with a five year warranty
Toyota now only gives a three year warranty because it is extendable up to ten years so long as you get it serviced at an official Toyota dealer. No strings attached, they really do give you an extra years warranty every time you do that, up to a maximum of ten years or 60/100k I think.

What has that got to do with a pointless car review ?
I'm not a fan of small cars - and small, plasticky 'tin can' cars even more so. Equipment levels are ok, but it's extremely bland on the inside, and externally, Mazda don't look like they've really tried. So many cars now share platforms to keep costs down (customers aren't really seeing any 'savings' though) we'll soon end up with all the big brands using the same ones, and cars will be all the worse for it. Innovation? Gone. Styling? Bare minimum. Just swap out the badge for a different company - job done.
Shame on you MAZDA!!!
