I've just started watching the newer videos and thought I should go back to the beginning. Throughout all of them, poor Spencer looks so exhausted! A very talented man.
I've watched every video from the bottom, making my way up. You all really inspire me. I see all the hard work you're putting into building your dream home. I know you all are tired as well. There is a finish line and when you reach it, the reward is bitter sweet! I excited because I'm planning on building me one as well. Hopefully my journey will start next year.
Spenser, for the future, you might want to bend a hook on the rebar under your plates to improve uplift resistance, good job though. You should be proud of yourselves for how much care and precision you are giving to this important and back-breaking process. Congrats. Wetting the mixer after each batch, cuts the dust and makes the mixing go faster. Mackenzie, you are not just the waterboy, you are also the cheerleader, the cameraman and I'm sure you do a lot of the clean-up and fetch and tote. Having done lots of projects alone, I can tell you I really appreciate all of those kinds of help. Good luck.
I am new to your channel and I am really enjoying it, you guys are great together , What a chemistry, thank you for sharing this beautiful experience, God bless you all
You guys are awesome and your wife man!!!! Shes a hard worker you lucky to have such a woman in your life .Good luck guys much love love the vodeos been watching from the begining.
Oh yeah ,Concrete work is tough, but when the foundation is done at least you feel like a big obstacle is out of the way. Wish you guys the best .Fun part is coming up when you have to outfit the container..creativity can kick in. Peace and greetings from offgrid in the island of Tobago.
It's a bit late for you both now (just found your posts, excuse the pun) which I am enjoying very much, but in case you have more concrete jobs to do, here is some tips, basically the way the pros do it. 1. To stop the bag mixes from compacting in the mixer or even if you are making your mix from raw materials the same applies, always put some water in the mixer drum first, you know how much water you need for a full mix (so hold some water back) then add the dry ingredients, keeping the mixer going all the time, don't stop it to add dry ingredients, split the bag in two if you need to, using a plywood board to put it on (so you can gather up any mix that spills out and add back into the mix, you can add the dry mix more easily this way, finally add as much water as you need to get the right consistency. 2. As you are fetching the water from the pond, it might be a good idea that you have more than 1 watering can to start with as they are not that costly (at least 2 to 4 I would say) so you know you have plenty of water on hand when you start a mix. 3. Don't know how you clean your mixer out when finished, but here’s how I do it, put 2 or 3 house bricks or stones the same size and 2 or 3 cans of water into the mixer, then leave to rattle about in the mixer for a while before emptying it usually does a good cleaning job, also using a stiff yard bush and water on the outside of the drum, will stop any build-up of concrete build up on the mixer, left undone a mixer won’t last long, plus cleaning your wheelbarrow thoroughly and hand tools will make them last much longer. Hope this does not sound like teaching granny how to suck eggs, so please don't take offence if it does.
forgot to mention if you make your concrete mix from the raw materials, then the order of mix is, first water then cement, mix these together then add sand and aggregates, then water to final conistancy.
Hey. For donkey carrot, for dog big bone, for Spencer big steak of beef and for sweet girl McKenzie...plenty flowers. You are so brave and strong. Keep going. Don't afraid snake or mouse rat whatever...I love watching you. Bravo
He looks so tired!!! It’s lots of work! Don’t worry about voids, your not putting enough weight on them to be any major concern folks !!! I was have done more concret than many people in the business!!! I built bridges some jobs we had three concrete pumps!!! With those tubes you have look like 12” right? Little voids I bet will not bother a thing? Looked like you had it pretty liquid so should be just fine! Now had it been really dry then it could be a problem later on!
Hint move mixer and trailer with concrete closer to water. It is easier to move the mixed concrete in the wheelbarrow than carry water and bags to the mixer.
For future reference if you start with water in the mixer she'll mix easier. If you dump the bags in a mortar pan and use a square shovel to fill the mixer it will make your life easier.
I can't imagine what kind of wind it would take to blow those containers off their foundation. Welded down, the weight of the containers and house furniture, damn !! Now I WOULD find time to mount two lightning rods at each end away from the house and well grounded. Also have lots of fire insurance.
Tip#1 ; move your mixer close to your footers or any other concert work when having to use a wheelbarrow. That = less work and more importantly less back aches. New sub just watching old videos, great job so far.👍
rebar should have had 90 degree bends on them, to tie them forever solid on the concrete. Tornado can lift them out of concrete. Unlikely, but possible. Enjoying the series as I am possibly going to be getting containers as well.
This might sound obvious but having two mixers really helps. It isn't so much double through put, it helps flow too, and improves the quality of the mix. You are still pouring the same amount of concrete so no more effort is needed.
Add some mint mouthwash and make the peroxide and baking soda into a rather thick paste. That's the only thing that worked for us when our dogs got sprayed by a skunk....twice within two days...
Understand the skunk thing all too well. Our 1-yr old pup did a great job protecting our chickens from some skunks the other night and got hit. The wind direction push the spray/smell all through our house. What a conundrum! We too did the hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dawn soap trick. It helped immensely but weeks later our sweet Clara pup still stinks.
When you placed the containers on these posts did you find there was any variation with the corner feet of the containers resting a bit lower than the ibeam? Or did you make the corner beams slightly lower?
Enjoyed this, I love using sono tubes with cement, it's unusual to find something that is good and cheap. I was puzzled at the plates for welding until I remembered hurricanes. Containers are designed to be supported from each end, but the supports in the middle can't hurt. Great video, shame about your camera.
Someone should have loaned these kids a tractor with a post hole digger on the PTO shaft- it was painful watching them dig all those holes last episode by hand! LOL
I have been watching all of the video's and I have to say after that last post, Spencer should have taking a week or so off. You looked so beat. I can hardly wait to catch up to you on the new up date video.
"when I was young"... I cast more concrete just like that than makes sense. Point of concern was the plates without bends, or attachment to rebar. It would have been better for the rebar to protrude and to weld the plates on after. A bit of engineering, but doable and more secure. Then I've installed towers and the dynamics are a bit more critical. Nothing worse than being 1/4 bag short ;D Sorry about the camera damage, happens to the best...
Now that you are all done. Hold the bag flat and cut the bottom in the middle then let it fold in half. Poor both sides in to the mixer. Put water in the mixer first. That mixer will hold at least three bags I think. We call that a three-bagger. You want to put in enough concrete for a two-bagger. Put it in one bag and then makes it put in the second bag. More water then the second the third bag.
I really like the intro. Damn!! you are doing a real difficult job carrying all that water from the pond. What was the water can count?? Not to leave Spencer behind, good job on all the mix bags. 💪🤘
Life Uncontained, just a suggestion (although a little late) you might want to invest in a few 5-gallon buckets and/or a water trough. They both come in handy for so many things.
If you soak then and rinse with V-8 j the stink will be gone for a dog your size use a quart and soak good and than rinse out. The dog will have a orange tint but it goes away in a couple of days. Works on humans and all animals.
keep at it! did you think about how you will get the welder in between the containers and the plates once the containers are in place? Especially with the plates being smaller than the concrete footings. Or will you have an intermediate piece going between the footings and the containers?
We designed our foundation so that the shipping containers should sit right in the middle of each metal plate, allowing for enough room to weld the container and plate together. Also, the shipping containers are five feet apart so we will be able to weld each one from the outside.
Love the Videos guys.... Just curious Spencer ( since it was not shown ) , how did you attach the mounting plates to the rebar ? Did you just weld them ? Keep on Keepin' on....
Just recently started watching your channel. So this comment is too late to help with your past work. But I am concerned about you breathing cement dust. A respirator or dust mask might be a good idea for future concrete work. I hope you stayed mostly up-wind or held your breath a lot. Wishing you the best of health so you can enjoy your dream for many years.
hi I have just a few questions do you have a code for your footing ? what was your height and dept and with of your holes ? what are you doing for water ? do you have a well or water tanks thanks gbl
Good progress so far. Fantastic content. Love watching you. Your dog is the star in many of your episodes . Love the wife's jokes and humour she is so pretty and cute. You both are very hard workers. Like many others l always wanted to do what you guys are doing but to old now. So guess I'll live my dream through you.
New subscriber here...liking what you guys are doing. RUclips recommend one of your videos to me and im gald they did. Cant wait see your container home.
Life Uncontained I been wanting to get solar but where I live in Oklahoma its very windy so now im looking at wind power... but I dont know anything about either hahaha.
sometimes if you do not vibrate the post by either tapping it or using something that vibrates like a big vibrating sander, the cement will leave voids where it doesnt settle in the form. Basically, air bubbles.
My wife says You make a good water gal and you make her laugh a lot. Me - did you guys talk about your toilet situation in one of your videos. Maybe we missed it. We just bought 7 acres in Noth Idaho and plant to start the same journey next May.

The animals and how sweet you are with them is so nice to see!
My heart and back go out to Spence. I had to build a concrete slab for our new mini split and thank God for my son in law. My back wouldn't take it.

I can't wait to see the containers stacked on top of your foundation. Nice work guys.
I love that you two smile and have fun through all the hard work. Even though its not all fun. Like you said one day it will all be worth it...
You guys are awesome and your wife man!!!! Shes a hard worker you lucky to have such a woman in your life .Good luck guys much love love the vodeos been watching from the begining.

Spencer did an awesome job on the support posts.
Thumbs up 👍 working through it all. 😊
BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO from a guy from morocco, great couple, great work and great country.

Some great info Berry! Thank you!

Finding that formula for skunk removal was a life saver when our big dogs used to chase and get sprayed by the skunks.
Always buy a couple extra bags because you can always return them if you don’t need them
Love the off grid tip. Lol. It’s always a work out when concrete is involved. It’s coming together. Looking good guys.
I would move that mixer closer to the site pour. Or get another extension cord or two. I would have about 5 or 6 5 gallon buckets of water everywhere.
Lol bear was loving that rub
I just started watching these videos. They are amazing and inspiring! I hope, though, that in later (um newer?) videos you guys are using microphones

It's a different kind of "workout" than the "GYM"!
Love your channel!!!
Fantastic video of you two working together. 👍👌

Give big daddy a kiss for the hard work!
I start watching again ur videos from the beginning .
I have done projects where I needed to run to the store just to finish. I feel you pain.
Yay concrete pillars r done!!
For myself I find it very difficult that anyone would give you guys a thumbs down on any of these video's
You are funny and your channel is great.
I can't imagine what kind of wind it would take to blow those containers off their foundation. Welded down, the weight of the containers and house furniture, damn !! Now I WOULD find time to mount two lightning rods at each end away from the house and well grounded. Also have lots of fire insurance.
Awesome progress you guys. You are doing a fantastic job. Greetings from Andreas on Off Grid Sweden
Good job both of you. Only thing I would of done different is get the concrete operation closer to the footings, less wear and tear on you.
Tip#1 ; move your mixer close to your footers or any other concert work when having to use a wheelbarrow. That = less work and more importantly less back aches. New sub just watching old videos, great job so far.👍
you should wear a mask... your building this dream to be in fresh air, you want to be around to enjoy it :)
she is so bubbly and funny, i wouldn't mind working with her, the day most likely flies.
You guys are inspiring 👍🏻 and for that i will definitely subscribe and follow you guys. Good luck!
WOW i know that look...i had it when i did my foundation
rebar should have had 90 degree bends on them, to tie them forever solid on the concrete. Tornado can lift them out of concrete. Unlikely, but possible. Enjoying the series as I am possibly going to be getting containers as well.
You soon will be grounded!
Bear is amazing!
Nice Work, literally

remember to look after your tools or they will not last, the cement mixer is no different always run it loaded and wash it when complete
When you placed the containers on these posts did you find there was any variation with the corner feet of the containers resting a bit lower than the ibeam? Or did you make the corner beams slightly lower?
Nice job from philippines
concrete is a wonderful thing i work with it every day making beams for bridges
Good afternoon from St John Parish, Louisiana 9 Aug 20.
Add water to the mixer first and and while the mixer is running add the concreat mix

Containers are designed to be supported from each end, but the supports in the middle can't hurt. Great video, shame about your camera.
My dog was sprayed and what people don't know is the smells are different how awful it is so I totally understand and feel for you good luck friend
Watching again at 1.21 million subs..
Someone should have loaned these kids a tractor with a post hole digger on the PTO shaft- it was painful watching them dig all those holes last episode by hand! LOL
"Literally."
I have been watching all of the video's and I have to say after that last post, Spencer should have taking a week or so off. You looked so beat. I can hardly wait to catch up to you on the new up date video.
Always add water before concrete I was told
Lot's of love from India
You are the man Spencer. I meant men. Awesome jobs.
"when I was young"...

Very nice🌹🌹🌹
you guys should put some wather in mixer before you put concrea in then it would not get hardened
Ya'll need to get your volume settings corrected .
I agree, LOUD, quiet, LOUD, quiet... Otherwise, great video.
Spenser looks like he is ready for a shower supper then bed
Nice history
water from the roof should be assembled😂
I really like the intro.
Damn!! you are doing a real difficult job carrying all that water from the pond. What was the water can count??
Not to leave Spencer behind, good job on all the mix bags. 💪🤘
Haha The watering pail we were using is 2 gallon so that was roughly 65 trips down to the pond. 😅
Life Uncontained, just a suggestion (although a little late) you might want to invest in a few 5-gallon buckets and/or a water trough. They both come in handy for so many things.
Mackenzie, 65 trips to look for water snakes, very brave and energetic, might want to get a pump, this is not the last of the concrete. Good luck.
Cool
Spencer moved 10,400 pounds of concrete...dang!
Moving them 3 times makes it 31,200 pounds!
serious work-out!
Just curious if you made the post's at different heights since the corners are lower than the beam by 1/2".
If you soak then and rinse with V-8 j the stink will be gone for a dog your size use a quart and soak good and than rinse out. The dog will have a orange tint but it goes away in a couple of days. Works on humans and all animals.
💛
Life un contained in a container
What is the distance between each post going length?
A 1 x 2 stick would work better than a piece of rebar for that cleaning. That mixer should have been been kept super wet the whole time.
Who flys your drone! Good job
How many inches you pouring for pads in hole. Project looks good
In all your trips to the big box store, you never picked up a 5 gal bucket? Much fewer trips to the pond....
Hey guys....Waiting for your new vdo.. How much I should wait for it?
keep at it! did you think about how you will get the welder in between the containers and the plates once the containers are in place? Especially with the plates being smaller than the concrete footings. Or will you have an intermediate piece going between the footings and the containers?

Life Uncontained aaahh, didn't get the 5ft spacing. In that case, this should work nicely!
Love the Videos guys.... Just curious Spencer ( since it was not shown ) , how did you attach the mounting plates to the rebar ? Did you just weld them ? Keep on Keepin' on....
umm.... didn't mean to sound like a D!ck. I hope it wasn't taken that way.
We stayed out of the dust as much as possible but next time we’ll try to be more protected. Thank you for mentioning that! 😁
@@life.uncontained yup silicone dust in the lungs is like asbestos exposure, it is a long term killer
Are you using shim plates to level the containers and I have seen containers set on post with backhoes with forks or a rubber tire fork lift
Yes, we’ll be shimming the post to make sure we get absolutely level. Nothing is worse than an uneven house. Lol
hi I have just a few questions do you have a code for your footing ? what was your height and dept and with of your holes ? what are you doing for water ? do you have a well or water tanks thanks gbl
Ack! You shouldn't have used pond water! All that silk and algae and other particles will weaken that concrete. Same problem in my house's foundation.
Just threw the dirt back in the holes, no compaction?
Good progress so far. Fantastic content. Love watching you. Your dog is the star in many of your episodes . Love the wife's jokes and humour she is so pretty and cute. You both are very hard workers. Thanks Gary that means a lot to us!
New subscriber here...liking what you guys are doing. RUclips recommend one of your videos to me and im gald they did. Cant wait see your container home.
Thank you Keeping It Dutch!!! 😁
Life Uncontained I been wanting to get solar but where I live in Oklahoma its very windy so now im looking at wind power... but I dont know anything about either hahaha.
5:37 should have been a WOD...did you do it for time?
I know 4 years late, but I would have used a rental water pump for all that water.
How deep in the ground did you guys go?
Fix the volume issue music loud talking to quiet all videos the same
hi you too another brill video... yippee now the concrete done... now for the hard work lol ha ha
What kind of dog is Bear? He is so cute!
If you didnt vibrate the pillars you might have voids in them
you will not you might,
sometimes if you do not vibrate the post by either tapping it or using something that vibrates like a big vibrating sander, the cement will leave voids where it doesnt settle in the form. Basically, air bubbles.
well.done i admire you both that mixing is very hard work plenty. of moisturiser at the end of the day recommended 😃
John Sellers your insane a simple rod ram in the concrete breaks up the air
Right, But I didnt see him do that either. Thats why I mentioned it.
cuando publican otro video de la parte de adentro
My wife says You make a good water gal and you make her laugh a lot. Me - did you guys talk about your toilet situation in one of your videos. Maybe we missed it.
We just bought 7 acres in Noth Idaho and plant to start the same journey next May.
