How to make a kydex press and a knife sheath (for about $20)

- A simple video showing how I made a kydex press and sheath for my son's knife (aka "the world's smallest lawnmower blade knife"). I managed to build this press for about $20 dollars, but you could get by even cheaper if you were careful.
Kydex is an amazing material, once it's heated it can be formed to pretty much any shape and a sheath made of kydex will retain a knife or even heavier objects very well.
Tools used included: Harbor Freight belt grinder, metal files, dremel type black and decker tool, sand paper, scroll saw, kitchen oven, hinges and much more.
Follow along and build your own kydex press and sheath or just watch for the information.

Nice work! I don't know how necessary it is, but I heard drilling a small hole, where the tip of the blade is in the kydex, will help prevent the knife from rusting (kind of like a drainage hole).
Love that press, I really need to make one.
Sharp Works Yes! Good point about the need for a drain hole. I've seen people place a small length of dowel running from the tip of the blade to the outside of the sheath when they press the Kydex. I might demonstrate that in a future video. But of course a small drilled hole works as well.
Thanks, I was looking for something basic to start making sheath's for knives. Most DIY press videos didn't include temperature or time in the oven to soften the Kydex, you did a good job.
Awesome video. Simple, clean and understandable even for a Kydex noob like me. 👌🏼
Your problem solving technique is Dad genius right there. No clamps.... no problems...body weight!!💪🏼 awesome video brother🤙🏼
Great video, thank you! Like a breath of fresh air 😎
Great looking sheath! 😀
This is awesome, you made it looks so easy. I laughed when you had to stand on it. I am always forgetting to get all the tools ready before I start a task.
scottecooke LOL! Thanks! It actually is pretty easy, I was surprised.
Great job man turned out pretty cool
really helpfull thanks man. case came out great. along with ur press keep it up man
backyardbladesmith Much thanks!
Well done Sir!
Great idea very nice work
Awesome!!!
Awesome video !!!
EXCELLENT!!!
I haven't experimented with kydex yet... looks easy enough. Thanks for sharing your experience!!!
Carolina Chris Outdoors, Yes, surprisingly easy. My first "kydex press" consisted of 2 pieces of cheap foam mat, a scrap 2 x 8 and my kitchen floor.
Great vid
Cool knife
Great Instructional Video. Love how you show the stupid things sometimes men do. Great Humor.
Nice sheath I didn't know that it was that easy to use Kydex
Kadin Bob Indeed! Super simple.
You could also forego the hinge by drilling holes through both pieces of wood and installing dowels in one, long enough to line up both pieces. Then clamp both ends.
Oh wow. Just stumbled across this video and you say you’re from show low. My dad grew up there. Live down in Chandler. Great video!
PHX here. AZ!!
I use a bit of red buffing compound on my wheel when buffing the edges. It seems to help with the burning issue a bit.
Nicely done. Amazing how much better they turn out with stiffer foam. I have really loose cell foam and, while it works, you just done get that nice definition. Though, it also could be the amount of pressure exuded on the press....... :)
Iron Ridge Outdoors Thanks! Yes, my first experiment used some of that foam that links together like a puzzle on the floor. It worked, but this foam designed for forming Kydex is superior.
Awesome video thanks for sharing your skills.
TheCryptomanHiking&Bushcraft , Anytime, my friend! Hey, how are you liking 5000 subscribers? I bet it feels pretty good. Congrats! And well earned!
FargoFX Thank you so much it's been a long road to get there. You have such a great channel.
Wow, you really got your shit together.
Never worked with kydex before but it looks relatively easy to work with. The sheath turned out really nice👍
OUTDOORS55 Thanks! Kydex is surprisingly easy to work with and affective. I want to get into leatherwork also, some of the knife designs I'd like to make would definitely look better in leather. Maybe next month. LOL.
I'm working on a cleaver style knife and would love to see u make one as well
great video, just a couple questions though. where did you get your foam at, and what kind is it? thank you in advance.
Please share Where did you get the foam/type foam?
Hey FargoFX, would you mind leaving the link to the $9 tool you got instead of the press? Your videos are really helpful for someone also figuring out their way into this hobby! thanks!
Good video. My only question is what is the exact name of the black material used inside the press that has give to help mold kydex onto the blade.
Any thoughts on how to make one with a belt clip?
I need to build a proper press. I've always used a towel, a board, and my body weight. It looks like a press would give me much more uniform results.
Liked and subbed.
maybe clamp the work together, before you attach the hinge? great video! missed the part about the foam you chose. what is it?
Please look up Ulti-Clip. I believe it would work great on your pieces.
Oh wow my folks have a house in Show Low. I live in an even smaller place with no lowes or home depot.. You think I can find some foam like this at Ace Hardware?
5 years later, have you come up with any improvements in your process?
Link to the kit you bought?
Hey FargoFX, would you mind leaving the link to the $9 tool you got for attaching the two pieces of kydex together?
Still doing the kydex thing? At harbor freight they have a dowel drill bit kit for like $3.99 that has the starter tip, they also have the Punch as to mark your holes. If you don't have a harbor freight close by let me know and I can send you the stuff.
What's the thickness of your sheets?
Can you please tell me the dimensions of the wood you used for your press?
Nice! Links to the parts on amazon?
Phil Reindl Hmmm... that sounds like an opportunity for "affiliate marketing" I may have to look further into this. I dig your knew profile pic by the way.
Are you taking orders?
I'm trying to build a kydex press but I dont know where to get the right foam? Can anyone help me out
2:25 hi there
I saw a guy use a pvc pipe to make a sheathe
This was an excellent video! Informative, entertaining and real. I will subscribe. I work at Harbor Freight ( I spy multiple HF tools) let me know if you need anything, and I will do my best to help you out (:
