    Utterly stunning. Poetic. Melancholic. Courageous. Sublime. Moyet is never less than brilliant but this is right up there with her very best. I'm now all the more confident that 'Other' will be THE album of the year. Incredible.

      Hi John, Agreed, it is a superb album but like it or not, Alison`s career was only possible from her media exposure from her time in Yazoo, which gave her the chance and opportunity to `Make-It`, as a Solo artist, that we recognise and respect today...Everything else is irrelevant...Despite Alison`s own declarations of being PUNK and `Non-Scene` during her formative years in music, Without the `POP` element that Vince and herself brought to the collaboration that became Yazoo, many would speculate, despite Alison`s unmatchable vocal talents, she would have remained in the shadows, unappreciated on the wider stage, being only applauded, by the few...Doing gigs in the pubs and touting your talent in less worthy venues is one thing, but missing and then refusing to acknowledge the chances, that are given to you, is a situation that no deserves...One of the underlying factors that seem to be missing from those soloist`s and groups that `Makes-It`, amongst there countless thousands of `Wannabes` desperate to be acknowledged in the public arena, is what actually brought them to public attention and therefore `Success`, in the first place. `Stars` oftentime (I will ignore this American auto-correct to this word, through belligerence) can sneer dismiss all they want, about their past but without the initial sacrifices to privacy, sanity and `Compromises` in the early days, you will always remain a Could`ve been...

      I beg to differ here...I did not realize her talent until she released "Alf". "Invisible" got quite a bit of radio play here in Houston. It was not even until the release of later albums did I learn of her work with Yazoo or Yaz. For me, her media exposure was after those early years. I love the earlier music but that is not what got me on the Alison bandwagon.

    Such a simple, stripped back, unaffected song. Sung with a tenderness and raw emotion that not only gets to the feelings... but really stirs them up. Emotion so much so, that it borders on being heartrendingly sad from the first few notes in. If this song was a piece of glass it would be on the verge of breaking into a thousand tiny pieces with the slightest touch. That`s how delicate it is-and therein lies its strength. Poetic, melancholic, poignant, sublime, transcendent-these are words which could be used to describe `Other`... yet, as music goes I don`t think it`s so easily defined. For locked deep within is that added dimension that mere words can`t quite express. You really have to listen with your feelings, and more importantly, with your heart (for if the heart is not engaged there`s just so much that regrettably can be missed). I liken it to a painter, who, with the finest and most delicate of brushstrokes transfers their private innermost feelings to canvas. It`s incredibly brave, as it`s putting something intensely personal into public hands and then hoping that those listening-in will grasp the true nature of what`s being said. It`s the sort of music that puts the emphasis on the fundamental value that `less is definitely more`, and in doing so, succeeds wonderfully in making its point.

    Gosh... I want to listen to this song with you singing it in french, Alison... and with a fully-fledged string orchestra behind you!
    This is so 'chanson-française', so Brel, so Aznavour in its deepest structural root - just with an electro-pop dress on top! Truly breathtaking pop at its absolute best!... Loved it in 2017 - love it even more now in 2024! Quite the truly honest, heartwrenching 'classic-Moyet'!
    Thank you so, soooo much !!! 😘

    👉 *The splendor of Moyet's presence* in this achingly bare video makes me
    feel like I am _intruding_ on such a *gripping personal moment.* And yet...
    I can't look away. _The intensity_ of emotion... combined with pure vocal
    talent & poetic composition is inspiring! She takes my breath away. 💗💖
    I cannot believe they just give Grammys away when talent like this goes ignored!

    Absolutely astonishing. Our greatest living voice continues to make bold, challenging and brilliant music. 'the minutes' was a career-high, but I have a feeling 'Other' might just top even that. And let's not forget the lyrics here..... Moyet's never receives the credit she deserves for her songwriting, and this is so lyrically deft and clever. A welcome, fabulous return.

    • @Logans3Run
      @Logans3Run 7 лет назад +2

      Hi Russ, completely agree and along with arguably her other `best` albums to date, including Hoodoo, Hometime and The Minutes, `Other` will match or surpass what has been written and produced before. However, when it comes to the `initial-official` single releases from her albums, Alison has demonstrated a stubborn refusal, to acknowledge the `obvious` tracks to release that could (and should) be played on the Radio Networks. There was plenty of confusion when she wanted and insisted, that `Should I Feel That It`s Over` was the first single to be released for the `Hometime` album, when it was patently clear, that `Do You Ever Wonder` and `More` were the tracks that her supporters and the bods who decide the radio playlists for that week, would go for. No, Alison being Alison and having a Veruca Salt moment, wanted to swim against the current...That is all well and good, but it should also be borne in mind, that Record Companies have an obligation to make as much money and profit from an artist, as possible, because as one of my former colleagues at Virgin Music stated ,"We are not a F**king Charity"...There are way to many examples of artists, who end up looking at the inside of their backsides (especially if their first album is an unbelievable success...Think Terence Trent Darby on this one, and you get the rest...) Whatever the configuration of Alison`s `Other`, lets hope that the official single release is a decent one, dare it be said `A Crowd Pleaser`, one that could not being denied `A` Playlist spot, as her release of `When I Was Your Girl`, from the minutes album, was not what people were expecting, or to be honest, actually wanted to hear as first offering and ended up largely un-played, even though it got `A`-Listed at Radio 2 (Thanks to Graham Norton)...Cheers Russ.

    • @russthomas7852
      @russthomas7852 7 лет назад +1

      Hi Paul,
      Yes, the 'first single' has been something that seems to have haunted AM forever. Its always a difficult one, but I agree about 'Should I Feel That It's Over' being not the best or most obvious track from Hometime. Yes, it should have been 'Do You Ever Wonder', an absolutely pristine, perfect slice of gorgeous pop, I think. It's beautiful, chirpy, even now. And a harpsichord!!! A bloody harpsichord!
      Then there was 'When I Was Your Girl' which I don't understand as a single when there was 'Right as Rain' begging to be released. There were at least three other tracks I'd have chosen from 'the minutes' as singles, but not WIWYG.
      But again, it's a personal choice thing. And you have to go with what radio wants, ultimately, even if it might not be your personal favourite.
      This isn't a single as such, just a taster of the album. But in typical Moyet fashion - this track isn't at all representative of the album :-))). It's looking to be an eclectic mix but I think we'll see more of the shockingly stunning Gigsworth electronic soundscapes. The filmic beauty of 'Horizon Flame' and the steely, grinding 'Changeling' and 'A Place to Stay'. Sigsworth and Alison make a perfect musical match, it's where she should have gone straight after Hometime, I think personally, but these two albums will show the wait was worth it.
      I hope whatever single is chosen, the radio get right behind it, as in this generic, bland Sheeranesque musical landscape we are currently wallowing in, you can't ever have enough bona fide artists like Alison Moyet, who's always, even in her poppiest moments, been one of the 'others'. x

    • @Logans3Run
      @Logans3Run 7 лет назад +1

      Hi Russ, you are unerringly spot on... It does seem amazing, that with Alison`s professional and life-long list of contacts, `Insider-Helpers` and Social Media `Surrogates`, a much more `enthusiastic-resounding-endorsement ` response, to her previous material, had not transpired...Journalistic `Politeness` is one thing but when you are constantly categorized as an `80`s Icon`, then you end up being, likened to the Salmon, who will, one way or another, have to swim against the current, to eventually make their point (?)...

    • @russthomas7852
      @russthomas7852 7 лет назад

      Paul Kennedy I think, though, 'the minutes' turning out to be a top 5 album was pretty amazing. Sony, for one, must've been dropping their jaws at this event. And the media, on the whole, seem to love Moyet. They don't fail to support each album, so I think this one will do the same business. I have a feeling it might.... and the accompanying tour is huuuuge. I have tickets for Cardiff. Absolutely cannot wait.... I've seen hundreds of live acts... Moyet is easily in my top three ever. Every time ;)

    • @Logans3Run
      @Logans3Run 7 лет назад +2

      Hi Russ, Alison seem to be ready to pull out all the stops to promote `Other` and tour `Globally`...`the minutes` album managed to reach number 3 on the `Mid-Week` Charts in the U.K, after Alison`s initial appearance on the Graham Norton show, on the day of it`s release: Monday...It does help anyone wanting maximum impact for the first week sales tally, to appear on at least one other high profile (popular) programme, to keep the momentum at it`s strongest and the clear choice would be a slot on a Friday evening programme, without any technical disasters or Alison turning up mortally pissed for the interview, after finishing all the booze in the `Green Room`...She has admitted to liking the brandy...

    I transcribed the lyrics as best as I could:
    I don't know precisely which day
    Coloured me other
    Perchance it may've been a slow bleed
    So I cut out whichever shape I need
    I don't sue for rescue
    I'm as free as I have ever been
    Don't want another rock
    To hang about my neck
    You see bejewelled
    I see bedecked
    In dead stars
    And nothing
    Touching me
    Nothing touching me
    I am glad for open windows
    I call for birds that do not come
    You beacon dead eyed welcome
    Bones bleach off the city
    And when I'm done I'm done I'm done
    Keep the turn over our aim
    I don't want to look upon another word
    This heart so lightly thrown
    I say disarm I hear disown
    It sounds familiar
    And nothing
    Touching me
    Nothing touching me
    I don't want another rock
    To hang about my neck
    You see bejewelled
    I see bedecked in dead stars
    I don't want to look upon another word
    This deal so lightly spent
    And what says here
    Says came and went
    It sounds familiar
    Nothing's touching me
    Nothing's touching me
