  • Hello! Today we're going to be taking a look at Vital Signs by Rush! In this video I will be taking a look at what looks to be one of Rush's shorter pieces as well as talking about some recording gear that was used to produce this track. I'll also be talking about some of the things that Neal Peart, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson are doing that really stand out to me.
For those of you that don't know, this video will be covering not just a reaction to what I'm watching but I'll be talking about the things that I really enjoy about what the featured artist is doing. This can range from how they have composed their music from player to player if it's a band, or the drummer himself; and what I think they're doing really well technically as well as musically! Of course, there's only so much that can be covered in a short RUclips video so there are bound to be things that I've missed so bear with me! And now, time for the mandatory disclaimer!
Here's is the link to the original video!

This is going to be a reaction and analysis of the song meaning that I will be pausing the song a lot to give my thoughts, reactions and analysis so if you are here to just listen to the song with no meaningful feedback, this is not the video for you. Stay happy and healthy!
Thank you so much for stopping by and watching this video, I hope that you enjoy it!

Apparently, Rush were big fans of The Police. In particular, Neil really appreciated Stuart Copelands style. They took it to another level on their next couple of albums by incorporating more of a reggae beat.

Check out Headlong Flight from the Clockwork Angels album, Neil’s drumming is next level on that song.🔥🔥🎧

And most of the drums on that album weren't charted out (like Neil usually did), and were done "on the fly" in studio. It's how the producer, Nick Raskulinecz, wanted Neil to do it.

Alright old drummer here, seen Rush live over a dozen times...like I said old, the PZM was used as an early on addition for not only the cutting down on the reverb/tone of specific drums for this song, Neil was experimenting with an early electronic snare. It was a pad snare, sorry forget what it was, read about it 20 years ago, kinda foggy. If you look at drum cam videos or stills, you can see the pad just to the left front of his snare above the kit, in between toms...that is what he used. Ok fine, I was a Rush nut and my first concert with Signals tour in 82, I started playing drums in 77, didn't discover Rush until late 80 right before Moving Pictures came out. Enjoy their musicianship, song writing, and best of all, their live performances!

Greetings from Brazil! I don't know if you even said that in the video, but an interesting detail (I recommend later to watch the official video of this song): to have this special effect in the battery Peart used a sound capture system in his chest, to really hear the drums from his "point of view" ...

That quick decay sound on the snare also reminds me of how Joy Division's drums sounded, which was another sound of that time.

Great reaction. I’m glad you were finally able to put this video up. Always wondered how they got the sound out of the drums so thanks for doing that research. If you like artists that have a different sound and don’t do the same thing over and over and over again, then Rush is your band. Each album has its own unique sound and sometimes within those albums you have completely different sounding songs.

Neil dug reggae. Traditional roots reggae is, for the most part, more more minimal in it's expression than rush would do, being such an extravagant band. I never noticed the "clip" mix of the drums as you pointed out; that is certainly part of reggae production, snare and all drums dampened. Thanks for posting.

Neil wasn't human. He was actually a robot created and programmed to play drums.

Cool info on the PZM. I can definitely hear the effect, but it had never crossed my mind the hundreds of times I’ve heard this song. Natural Science os a drummer’s song, IMO. It would be a great one for analysis. Always enjoy it when you put a video out. Cheers!

Wait until you get past early 80's Rush and head into the mid-80's Rush! From 1984's Grace Under Pressure album (from a 2004 concert), try out Red Sector A and you'll hear a version of Rush you'd be hard pressed to call Rush, if you only get hung up on the "classic rock" era - ruclips.net/video/djxL4qnDmhg/видео.html
Lots of fans abandoned them because they weren't as open minded as you about having an artist mix up their styles and techniques. Most of those fans are going to flood your channel with requests from the first 7 years of Rush's 40 year career :/

      @@thomasmuff1486 Idiotic response.
But this logic you can't criticize Chief Keef's 'music" or Slim Whitman's yodeling unless you have an album to present to compare it to.
How does it feel to be stupid? It has to suck to be as unaware as you before dying.
I mean, the ending of personal consciousness at death is a bummer, but you were never even fully aware.
      So sad 😭
