There's been an ongoing, assumed association between classical music, classical musicians, upper class social elites and snobbery. One not of that circle (or being around one not of that circle) was frowned on the circle. It's carried on for who knows how long. However, most of those musicians probably aren't upper class elites themselves and the tendency is to forget they are artists with a craft, but people first (because of said association). People like to have fun, enjoy time with others (generally speaking). They want to share their love for that craft with everyone else. I remember watching a documentary on Hilary several years ago. She came across as enthusiastic about what she does. While her talent was honed with hard work and dedication into a wonderful skill apart from the masses, she seemed quite either unaware or uncaring of that separation. In short, she seemed grounded by her talent instead of self-elevated. That attitude shows here and in others like TwoSet. Modern media has changed that age old perception. People don't see classical music/musicians as stuffy tuxedos anymore. They see people, talented, but regular people who like the same things we like. They see Hilary Hahn, Ray Chen, Chloe Chua in an element that's not a concert, an interview etc. having regular fun. Videos like this don't demean classical music. They make it more accessible and relatable to people. I don't know if we'll every truly understand the impact TwoSet has had on the growth of interest in classical music in the modern information era.
@tfh5575 I actually think the precise reverse. To be a truly great musician and play the music well, you must take a selfless attitude about yourself into it. Only then can you let the music speak for itself. Hilary absolutely nails that side of it.. and it is why she is such a fantastic performer. She doesn't want to make a mark about her.. she wants the music to do all the talking. Just a cosmic talent.
You know, as S A C R I L E G I O U S as this seems, I think Paganini himself would approve, given his proclivity to doing stunts like breaking his strings mid-performance on purpose without missing a note.

(my mum used to get worried about how I wasn't producing much sound; teacher told her that kids who talk loud naturally play loud. look at Hilary's interviews both now and in childhood, and you'll see that she's by no means a quiet, shy person! in fact, as a kid I'd almost say she was a bit hyperactive.)

So much to love about this. 2 Set has brought great music to a new generation, Hillary Hahn is cheered like a rock star by an obviously young audience, and everybody is having a blast. It is just beautiful.

Brett and Eddy are so accomplished , their humour is great, and they have made so many videos that expand our knowledge of music. In these extraordinary, worrying times, they bring much-needed artistic interest. It was uplifting to hear the audience's reactions to them playing the Paganini, while hula hooping ( for heaven's sake !! L.O.L.😊). I would love to hear Brett , Eddy and Hilary repeat the routine , without the hula hoops ! That was quite a challenge to keep the hoops going while playing complicated, demanding music. She used to practice 8 hours a day in school, but that was years ago. She has a child and is married, and she is very social. Back in 2012 she said she practices for 4 hours a day, but only plays for 2 of those hours - she also spends time thinking about the music, writing notes in the measures, walking around and stretching

@@da96103No, not at all. It was a total surprise. Thanks for asking that. I mentioned it briefly while replying to another comment somewhere here, but I will detail a bit. Eddy used that wig (+ girl voice) earlier in that show, calling himself (uh, herself) Hilary, acting as a third person who encouraged Brett about violin performances, or something like that. When that video starts, that is just after they finished their entire show, after they had walked out and came back on stage for a final farewell (+ potential encore, as is usual). Just before this video starts, they had exchanged a dialog (which they "acted", in retrospect) like "Do you have an encore?" "No, I haven't prepared anything." then Eddy goes out of stage and comes back with that wig saying something like "Don't worry, we have Hilary." At this point, nobody would've guessed there's a real Hilary hiding backstage, because as I mentioned above, Eddy already acted as Hilary in an earlier part of the show. Then Voilà! The real Hilary walks out, and it was a total big surprise -- the reaction from the stunned audience was not well captured in that video, perhaps because of the angle, location of the camera/mic, etc. It was much much bigger (at least as I felt). ;-)

They see Hilary Hahn, Ray Chen, Chloe Chua in an element that's not a concert, an interview etc. having regular fun. Videos like this don't demean classical music. They make it more accessible and relatable to people. I don't know if we'll every truly understand the impact TwoSet has had on the growth of interest in classical music in the modern information era.

I actually think the precise reverse. To be a truly great musician and play the music well, you must take a selfless attitude about yourself into it. Only then can you let the music speak for itself. Hilary absolutely nails that side of it.. and it is why she is such a fantastic performer. She doesn't want to make a mark about her.. she wants the music to do all the talking. Just a cosmic talent.

I remembered when eddy agreed to benny that his violin is not the best when it comes to large room projecting , here you can hear eddy's violin struggles to project compared to Brett's and Hilary's violin

Yep, you can hear the difference in their playing, between the guys and Hillary but you can also hear the difference in the violin quality

(my mum used to get worried about how I wasn't producing much sound; teacher told her that kids who talk loud naturally play loud. look at Hilary's interviews both now and in childhood, and you'll see that she's by no means a quiet, shy person! in fact, as a kid I'd almost say she was a bit hyperactive.)

I'm a " Brit" age 72, and love the 2 set violin !
They are doing a fantastic job in interesting young people to enjoy and appreciate classical music.
Brett and Eddy are so accomplished , their humour is great, and they have made so many videos that expand our knowledge of music. In these extraordinary, worrying times, they bring much-needed artistic interest.
It was uplifting to hear the audience's reactions to them playing the Paganini,
while hula hooping ( for heaven's sake !! L.O.L.😊).
I would love to hear Brett , Eddy and Hilary repeat the routine , without the hula hoops !
That was quite a challenge to keep the hoops going while playing complicated,

Hillary 9/10 dropped the hoop first but was steady. Eddy 9/10 he got dem hips! Brett...oh honey you got all the hard parts....10/10 visible effort.
But Brett and Eddy shared the repetitions so they played the same parts
Hilary got a bunch of the hardest parts, chromatic chords sixteenth notes, octaves runs, and she played them with power. This was so cool to watch.

Back in 2012 she said she practices for 4 hours a day, but only plays for 2 of those hours - she also spends time thinking about the music, writing notes in the measures, walking around and stretching

@@da96103No, not at all. It was a total surprise. Thanks for asking that. I mentioned it briefly while replying to another comment somewhere here, but I will detail a bit. Eddy used that wig (+ girl voice) earlier in that show, calling himself (uh, herself) Hilary, acting as a third person who encouraged Brett about violin performances, or something like that. When that video starts, that is just after they finished their entire show, after they had walked out and came back on stage for a final farewell (+ potential encore, as is usual). Just before this video starts, they had exchanged a dialog (which they "acted", in retrospect) like "Do you have an encore?" "No, I haven't prepared anything." then Eddy goes out of stage and comes back with that wig saying something like "Don't worry, we have Hilary." At this point, nobody would've guessed there's a real Hilary hiding backstage, because as I mentioned above, Eddy already acted as Hilary in an earlier part of the show. Then Voilà! The real Hilary walks out, and it was a total big surprise -- the reaction from the stunned audience was not well captured in that video, perhaps because of the angle, location of the camera/mic, etc. It was much much bigger (at least as I felt). ;-)
