I'm amazed people actually follow pro surfing comps at all. What people want to see is great surfers, surfing great. This idea of winners and heats and judging is strange and must come from a bunch of frustrated soccer parents wanting to force structure onto something that seems to have no rules and winners. The thing that amazes me is that companies tie themselves to this thing so closely. They could have promoted just a bunch of top notch people going around the world free surfing and it would resonate with their customers WAY more. I've been surfing for 30-ish years and I have managed to watch about 5 minutes of a contest before I got so bored I walked away.

yeah i get it, i love watching free surfers as well and I get that the idea of it being a comp doesn't resonate with what the experience of an individual surfer is. That being said, I do find the format of a competition adds a different dimension to watching surfing that pushes surfers to the best they are capable of and the results can be very exciting and entertaining. if you don't like watching it you don't have to watch it. I do think I've learned a ton just studying pros in comps though.

@@Gosurfbasis they brain washed you man! 😂. No doubt just about any time those people paddle out it’s worth watching. I’ve just never met anyone (not involved in the tour in some way) who is invested into who is winning or losing like people are into football or…I don’t know…tennis. This speaks volumes to me about the disconnect with the target audience.
