    With a voice like Alan Clarkes and a guitar player par excellence like Tony Hicks the rest of the band could be replaced but with these two pivotal figures in that band would have been a success whatever name they called themselves. I think Hicks is one of the most underrated guitarists in popular music, ditto Alan Clark’s vocal talents. IMHO.

      What absolute nonsense, Stop, Stop, Stop, On A Carousel, Hey Carrie Anne, Dear Eloise, King Midas in Reverse. You don't have these songs without Graham Nash. The only really good song without him is Long Cool Woman. I don't care how big of hits the others were, they don't touch Nash's input with CSN&Y.

      @@cindylubin4204 Yes well, you really need to listen to some album tracks by the band post Nash. He was doing " our house" The Hollies were doing "My life is over with you". CSN would have been nothing without Stephen. Graham's writing input was very light weight BUT, his falsetto harmonies did help to create the rich CSN sound.

They always were a standout band and the different directions they went actually gave us even more fabulous music. The harmonies as mentioned were second to none and still can impress, even with the early songs. My cue comes, I open the curtain, and Nash goes through it and sits down next to me on the road case. He says hello, then commented about the weather ( it was outdoors at an amphitheater), shared a joke, then shook my hand and I opened the curtain so he could go back on stage.

    George Harrison once disparagingly said the Hollies were more like a group of session musicians than a real band because he didn't like their cover of If I Needed Someone. The single did pretty badly following his outburst, it wasn't one of their finest, but would probably have done better if Harrison hadn't openly criticised it ( shooting himself in the foot moneywise as being the writer he lost himself the royalties ). Here in the UK during the mid sixties the Hollies were definitely one of the top bands with only the Beatles and the Stones really being bigger. They managed two big hits after Graham Nash left with I Can't Tell The Bottom From The Top doing ok as well, after which their popularity began to decline, chart wise, in the UK though their overall popularity has always remained high, until they released The Air That I Breathe in 1974 which was and still is one of their best songs and was a massive hit. Amazingly Long Cool Woman was not a big hit in the UK, I think some people thought they were trying to jump on the T Rex bandwagon, though that song always sounded more like CCR to me. A great song anyway. To me they were the ABBA of the sixties, a very successful pop band that at least tried to release good well made records and didn't just cobble any old rubbish together and hope that their fame and popularity would sell it. They made a few decent albums after Graham Nash left as well but as the Hollies were never considered to be an album band, these have been somewhat overlooked except by the fans of course. As the Hollies were one of my favourite bands in the mid sixties I've always had a soft spot for them, with or without Graham Nash. Other bands have lost Key members and still done OK, ever heard of a band called Pink Floyd?

    This is kind of a fluff piece about them. A few notes about them. Doris Troy and Gregory Carroll wrote Just One Look and Doris sang it wonderfully on record before them, but i like their version too. The Hollies won a popularity poll over the Beatles in the mid-Sixties as Britain's favorite group. Paul McCartney, not too shabby himself at hitting high tenor notes, said that he heard Graham Nash sing so high he thought it was a trumpet. Terry Sylvester was brought in mostly to replace the high harmonies that Nash had previously supplied to their wonderful 3-part harmonies and to help in songwriting. Tony Hicks (a very underrated musician) supplied most of the guitar parts, while Graham Nash was unplugged on stage with an acoustic guitar. Bobby Elliot supplied some great dynamic drumming. Stills played all of the guitar, bass, and keyboard parts for CSN in the studio, except for some acoustic guitar from Crosby and Nash. Marakesh Express is about smoking Moroccan hashish. CSN jokingly thought about calling their group "The Frozen Noses" for their love of cocaine. It almost completely destroyed them in the long run. Stills, by his own admission got too carried away with substances and alcohol, Crosby ended up in jail. Graham had his heart broken by Joni Mitchell after he left his wife. It's not all roses at the top.

    I wish people would stop sensationalising this event.
    The Hollies were basically a pop group (nothing wrong with that), and a good one, at that. Nash's output was changing with his increasing awareness of things inside and outside of music at that time. His material was good, sure. But it was not _Hollies_ material. And he needed to be able to get that material out. At the time, the idea of a solo album was a no-no across the whole field: nobody was doing solo output from inside the band they were in. So Nash had sod-all choice but to leave: it was a choice between remaining unhappy in a successful band or finding happiness in an embryonic band. I know which one I would have done ... this is a classic Lewinian avoid-approach conflict.
    But this did not even come close to destroying the Hollies. Him remaining with them would have taken them down.

    I love the Hollies but I do have one major complaint and that is their recordings sound horrible. It is a shame they did not have a competent engineer. All tinny high end and no warmth.

    Destroy them? They had a number one hit after he left. Graham had songs like Marrakesh express written and they didn't want it. When he met David Crosby he told Graham listen if they don't want them I really like your songs.

    They went from strength to strength with out Nash! He was the weak link in CS&N
    and also the Hollies. Very over rated and opinionated.

    • @SuperNevile
      @SuperNevile 2 месяца назад

      While I would agree the Hollies still did extremely well without Nash, and in the 60's Nash was very opinionated, he did have a point. The Hollies still were relying on "School Girl" singles (even ones written by him), as late as 1968 in order to get to get hits. His "King Midas" tried to tap into the zeitgeist, and even though very good, failed, a big frustration. Another case of big egos splitting bands. He needed a group of big egos and got into one. Just my opinion, but he did write some good songs, but not particularly "weighty" ones

    I saw Nash in London last year. As well as his own incredible back catalogue he very generously played Hollies songs....including not his own, plus some from Stills and of course his musical brother.....sadly estranged until before his death.....Croz.
    The Hollies wouldn't play his music and CSN....with Young when he felt like it....we're a true suoergroup. Wembley stadium 1974 blew my 17yo mind. Nash in 2023 did the same to me at 66.
    Bands change....look at Floyd after Waters left ....awful 'human being'. BTW, Gilmour was ASTOUNDING at the RAH on 15th October. An emotional joyous evening again.

    To me they became boring after Nash left. There is a great hypocrisy on their part. Nash had to leave because they didn't want to change direction, but after he was gone they changed direction even more than they would have with Nash. Marrakesh Express sounds more like the old Hollies than He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother.
