    I personally prefer a musicman, to me a p-bass sounds really mudy and undefined due to the lack of high mids. And personally when it comes to mixing in punk, I think the lack of low mids can be compensated with the guitar. It doesn't really matter if the guitar is muddy because most of the time only power chords are played anyway.

    Such a personal preference. 99% of the time I’m picking up a P bass, but there are certain songs where the extra clank and presence of the MM just fits better.

    Both sound great. Music Man sounds like a Jazz Bass and its cool and unique, but nothing beats a P-Bass mid-range growl.

    Hot take: Jazz Bass sounds fucking great for punk, especially the squier contemporary active HH, it sits somewhere between the p bass and a music man tonally IMHO

      Straight up dude. I was sceptical when I picked up the '95 Mexi, but for punk grind and some clarity thrown in, it leaves both of these for dead. And they're both awesome.

      @@jacobcarter1947 The picked Jazz sound is really gaining momentum again in some genres. It's a VERY good sound that is just begging for some overdrive, but it isn't everyone's cup of tea.

      I like their P/J basses, I used to have a 80's japanese Fender that ended up financing a move, wanted to get a new bass after not playing for a decade and was blown away by the Squier, mainly because I remember how bad they used to be, so now I got it and Ampeg combo amp on layaway

      @@MikeHunt.420 I know, some people prefer the treble bass sound, but the sound of p-bass is more low. In my opinion this is the most important in a bass. This is what gives body to music.

      I’ve got a PJ setup, so I can get the bridge pickup sound mixed in with the P Bass pickups if I choose to do so, I like it that way though the P Bass pickups are definitely used more than just solo J bass pickup

    I have both and it depends on the situation. If you want the bass to stand out more with more of a punchy tone, Music Man all the way. If you want a more full darker tone, P-Bass is it.

    The Music Man where the bass had the lead drive and needed to be upfront and punchy in the mix, but I guess that's a pretty standard mixing rule.

      As we have just learned a week ago from Mark Hoppus' stream, Mark H. and Jerry Finn (Blink 182 producer) decided to change the Stingray with a P because MM was too clanky.

      I love the Stingray because it's clanky. I can cut through two guitars much better with my Stingray than P. The Stingray has a much nicer neck as well.

    Wildcard option - Reverend Decision bass. It’s got a P/J pick up config and you can blend the two together, best of both Fender options

    My personal favorite bass is the Stingray, but for punk specifically, a P Bass is my choice most of the time.

    Based on the live shows I've been to, I'd say the bass choice breaks down (roughly) like this: 60% Precision, 20% Jazz, 10% Stingray, 10% everything else.
    What % would you rate each bass?

    I prefer the stingray for Ska style music 90% of the time, but the P sounds amazing for other styles.

    Mannnn I miss my p bass. Was such a workhorse and while my jazz bass and Spector would get drowned by three duelling guitars the heroic P bass would hold its own.

    I like the pbass. As much as I enjoy the tone of a stingray, I have trouble getting it to sit in the mix.

    Nice vid, your Basses sound awesome. I say personal choice for choosing a bass for punk. I personally use my weirdo 2011 Gibson Flying V Bass.

    Blind test, that I made with this video showed, that both sounds great. Some songs sounds better with P, another - with MM. But I'm still P bass fun (and player).

    I really love Paul’s tone on ATDI’s relationship of command it really fills out their more chaotic and busy mix while still being audible. Really has made me a believer Music man basses

      @@SugarpillProd Wil D is right though, you should consider following this up someday and adding a J bass in the shoot out. The growl from that bridge pickup is very specific and used in a lot of modern punk albums.

    Your video is awesome. Do you have the stock pick ups for the p bass? Also could you show how you set up your action on p bass please

      Yep! I never really swap out any of the pickups on guitars or basses.
      Honestly I haven't set the action in forever, but usually I just set it so that it was as low as I could get it, without having too much string rattle. I like it a little, especially on bass, but you can easily overdue it. Hope that helps!

    Personally, I prefer a Rickenbacker for punk, but out of these two, I'd have to go with the Fender. The P Bass has a very similar tone to a Ric, with just a bit more low end, but if you know what you're doing, you can dial in a P Bass to sound exactly like a Ricky, and vice-versa, so if that's the sound you're going for, P Bass all the way.

      Tbh I've never played a jazz, but I'd assume no, as most people who are looking for that clanky sound tend to opt for the MM. Though a jazz is probably a good in-between of the two.

    The P bass sits in there perfectly while still growling through where you want it to. The MM cuts through more, but to the detriment of the overall sound.
    Just my opinion.

      I always felt the same about the Rays. No matter where I put it. It just doesn't sit well for everything. But I want a bit more sculpting than a P. The Jazz is for me I've found. Hits like the P, grinds growls and clangs in all the right spots.

    Punks about using what you have. Most of the prolific punk bassists use what they do because it’s what they could afford when they decided to get serious for a lot it was what was hanging in the pawn shop window

    Use any Instrument you like to Play Punk Rock.There are no Rules! Höfner, Rickenbacker,Fender Jazz or Precision,Musicman,...who Cares,as long as you feel OK while playing and it Sounds good.

      @@SugarpillProd I’ve played bass for a while in a band a few years ago but I never owned one as I’m primarily a guitarist, and I’m trying to figure out which one would be good for me to start. I have tiny hands but I don’t want to start with a j bass or even a short scale bass and then getting so used to the smaller size that I can never use a p bass again 🤣

      @@DaveTheFuckingBrave if you're wanting something to sorta learn on and get you going I seriously can't recommend a American Fender P-Bass enough. I know The American series are much more expensive but if you're able to get a American you'll be glad you did.. I say that cause when you plug in and hear that rumble and tone it's gonna make you want to play more. Getting a instrument that you seriously Love will inspire you to play more than a instrument that doesn't move you. 🤘
