2 people on my course used a service like and got busted for plagiarism, then thrown out of the university.
These companies copy and paste large amounts of text which gets flagged using a windows program to detect plagiarism.

Quotes from each angle of the argument (social sciences) and a few connecting sentences, summary here, summary there, don't give your opinion, sit on the fence, cover every angle. Job done. Good enough for a 2:1 bachelor degree.

didn't even know this really existed whilst at uni but i am so happy i didn't use it. I struggled massively, had many sleepless nights and literally scraped a 2.1 through the skin of my teeth, but at least i was true to myself and earned my degree honestly!

Same here I hate books tho especially for law I have a module where there is one seminer but like 16 books to read and if I buy all those books remember it's only for one module I have 3 more would cost around £300+ Soo I'm hoping that the 2hour long seminer someone else has done the reading and I can just write notes hopefully I smash it.

What I want to know is how his University dealt with the situation. I think that's a fairly important aspect that wasn't really explored.
My university is struggling with how to deal with it. Online submissions are making it incredibly hard to track. What we have done, as professors, is change how we assess students. Multiple smaller assignments, worth lower amounts, and ones that require personal experience input from the students, are a couple ways that some of this type of cheating can be addressed. It is also very important to stress to the students that they can come to us if they need help and/or an extension. Many don’t know that they can be held ‘ransom’ by these services. It is scary and truly an unnecessary service. We need to be accountable for our own work and learn from our struggles and mistakes if we wish to truly succeed.
I definitely agree with incorporating smaller assessments. But yes, I think the most important strategy is reiterating to students that they can approach their faculties for help. University policies can alienate students - like the one in this docu. Student feel they can't ask for and get help in honest circumstances, which leads to dishonesty - the antithesis of the values universities should be encouraging. That breakdown of trust has become systemic, which explains why services like these are so prevalent.

Don't you think professors (lecturers) care a great deal about their students, including doing their best to help and support the ones who want to succeed? Part of their duty is also ensuring that the students who work hard are not disadvantaged against those who take short cuts.
I'm sure there are students using this service in order to avoid their responsibilities. I'm equally sure that there are students who seek these services as a last resort. Students with a mind to cheat will always find a way. Finding ways to detect this is of course, important. What I'm suggesting is that we need to change the university systems and policies which encourage students who wouldn't ordinarily seek to cheat, from approaching these sorts of services.
If you ask someone to write your essay you also need to make sure that it hasn't been posted anywhere on the net and that they're not writing the same essay for other students on your course. You also need to make sure it's gonna be good. And read through it changing wording and trying to improve it as you go.
Basically if you're gonna cheat you need to know how they catch the cheats and you also need to hand in a good finished product. Otherwise what's the point.

You got your essay back. Then claim the insurance on the laptop, and you got a brand new laptop after a month or so. Its a win win.

He just chose to party with his mates in London instead of being responsible. He lost over £400 and is in debt in the thousands, serves him right sadly. I had to give up on nights out to finish work, and it ended up with me getting a 1:1 by myself without any help. Funny how that works.

I was doing a postgrad last year, a nigerian student in our class spoke very broken english and was not the sharpest tool in the box. but somehow he kept getting almost 100% on all his essays and courseworks. i later found out that he was using a content writer back in his home town to do his course work and his dissertation for him. and as for the exams, he simply downloaded all the previous exams papers and memorised the answers for all the common repeated questions.
So yeah, with these services you can breeze through university and even get a distinction masters degree with little to no effort.

It depends on what you study.
Everything about university has become a joke, not only in this documentary but the system itself. Degrees are watered down, standards are lowered so absolutely every one can get in. To top it off the universities have become a business, manufacturing a tonne of Micky Mouse subjects that are not worth the £9,000.00 a year fee. Education in decades gone by was challenging and only the select few could get in for subjects that actually mattered.

What most students don't realise is that they can use a proofreading company to polish their essay or dissertation - without having to resort to cheating by using essay writers. At least they can take pride in the fact they have written it themselves and just got a bit of help with the grammar, spelling and punctuation etc.

Most universities can recognize when someone did plagiarism or not, but they know there is too many and they will lose their *MONEY* if they start kicking all of them.

I used a service like this before in 2nd year uni paid £235 for a first class essay but got a Pass for one part of the module. Don’t do it learn the material instead of taking shortcuts. It’s calm in final year I got a 2:1!

I'm in my first year of A Levels. I did 1800 words for my last philosophy exam which took about 4 or 5 hours to complete. I know it isn't at the same level as a uni essay but 3 days for 2000 words isn't hard if you just sit down and do it.
To write a Essay takes time and concentration but many students prefer to go out drinking and partying. Plain laziness and lack of responsibility. People like that don't belong in universities.

@Jane Lawson The level of motivation and responsibility required to do an essay on time or within the late hand-in period really isn't that high; it's a bit insulting to 18 year olds to suggest that most of them lack it. You don't need to be your 'best self' to sit down and bang out an essay.
I fucked about a lot in my first year and didn't miss one (although I was close a lot of the time), neither did any of my mates, and none of us are exactly exemplary students.
It ain't hard, nobody likes doing them but you've just got to suck up and get it done. The attitude of someone that buys essays isn't going to hold up well in 3 short years when they have a job.
No, it isn't particularly high. I suppose I was being a bit extreme. What I'm trying to say is that some young people will struggle with time management skills in their early adult life, and having a judgmental "suck it up" attitude doesn't help people develop them. We can expect people to go to university at the age of 18, or we can expect all university students to be mature, but you can't expect both at the same time.

2k word essay? Here in IB (high school) we have something called EE (extended essay) which is 4000 word essay. Writing a decent 2k word essay in 2-3 days is pretty easy if you have good time managing skills

@@suhailmall98 I know exactly what university is like. Both my husband and I have degrees. Yes, there are hard classes but I found university to be easier than high school. High school is full of busy work. In university you have to write a few papers and take a few tests for each class, easy. Lots of time to party every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Exactly. It seems like the only "grey area" industry where you cannot prosecute the supplier, only the consumer. The guy who got scammed...If you've been a victim of a crime and provide a police report, it's pretty standard that unis will consider this extenuating circumstances and grant an extension. Seems like he gave himself a lot of hassle for nothing.

I dont think this is bad. this is like any other industry, and it is far more ethical than companies that sells weapons to the military for example. Ideally the type of client that would use this service anyways isn't an english major, probably some kid who just needed an essay done because they don't have time to work on english.

Is essay plagiarism that big of a deal in the west? Everyone "plagiarises" essays here in Russia. It is not a big deal. I wouldn't even call it plagiarism. The worst that may happen to you is your professor asking you to redo the essay if he is really picky. That has never happened to me. In fact, we had a lecture on how to circumvent plagiarism checks.

Certifications need to be worked on to promote high level education beyond the exploitative University realm and research publishers need to stop selling a research paper for 30 pounds. Its ridiculous how education has been commodified when its so desperately needed to raise social cultural economic and political standards of countries.
I write essay for money and it's surprisingly easy to write an essay on a topic you've never studied. It shows how little is actually learned at university when you can write a first class essay using a couple of lecture notes and google books. I don't have access to a university library, don't have any expensive textbooks and have often never studied the subject that I'm writing on yet get feedback from clients that they received high grades and ask me to write their next paper for them.

@Ben Lowe all work that I do is original. A higher level piece with a longer deadline would probably work out about $4 a page. But that's through the site I work through. I don't know see much profit they take or how much they charge the client in the first place, I only see my fee
