Trailer Hitch Mount Changes Everything | Lewis Chainsaw Winch Gets Even Better

  • The trailer hitch mount changes everything for my log skidding setup as the Lewis chainsaw winch gets even better with this stable platform hitch. On today's episode I'll introduce you to a new tool that I've been using which is an accessory for the Lewis winch 400 mk2. The trailer hitch mount with it's 2" steel tube fits into any 2" receiver and provides a solid mounting point for the lewis chainsaw winch to sit on. As you'll see in this video, the solid platform allows the winch to move slightly side to side which gives me some control over the positioning of the steel cable as it spools onto the winch drum. As a result of this, the steel cable gets wound on tight and in perfect placement preventing any kinks or bends. On today's episode you'll see me using the Lewis Chainsaw winch to skid out a log that wouldn't normally be easily accessed. This is the type of situation that I often use this portable chainsaw winch in to help me retrieve trees that I can then make into lumber on my portable sawmill. Glad you fine folks are here and let's get down to it.

    A pointer for the Spencer tape. Get a carabiner and loop your belt through it then attach the tape clip to the carabiner.

    Question/concern for this setup. I recently bought a Lewis winch
    which I just attached to a [clone] MS660 .... the exact say you use is this video. My question is regarding
    running the power head without bar oil in the tank. The Lewis winch obviously
    doesn't need it, but will running the saw with a dry oil tank hurt the
    saw? Any intelligent comments would be appreciated......

    • @sawingwithsandy

      Unfortunately I’m not sure Michael. I haven’t had any issues with mine so far

      Not if you turn the oiler off, there’s usually an adjustment screw

    • @sawmillsam7156
      @sawmillsam7156 Год назад

      the oil in a saws oil tank is only for the chain. I would empty it out if using with a winch so it doesn't leak out and get messy.
      2 strokes are internally lubricated by the oil in the gas!

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  3 года назад +1

      You don’t really need that big of a chainsaw but I figure if I go big I won’t ever wish I had more power. I also have a 60cc saw so wanted a saw

  • @AndrewBrowner
    @AndrewBrowner 2 года назад

    can you do more than one log at a time, say you get 3 12' logs out of a tree can pull them level with each other and pull all three at once? ever find the limit of how much itll pull?
    secondly why not rev the chainsaw up a bit more, make sure its going fast enough that the clutch wont slip cause it can slip at low speed, and just to get the winch moving faster because it seems like a kinda slow bottle neck to the process especially if you need to winch each log one at a time and multiple times to an accessible trail

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  2 года назад

      Hi Andrew, I haven't been able to stall out the chainsaw due to pulling anything heavy yet. I have however found the weight limit of the cable and snapped it before in the winter when I tree was frozen to the ground i was trying to move. I could for sure move multiple trees at once with this as it's got a lot of power. Reason I don't want to rev up the chainsaw is because it has so much power that if the tree snags something it will load up the tension on the cable very quickly and I"d hate to break it

    • @AndrewBrowner
      @AndrewBrowner 2 года назад

      @@sawingwithsandy yeah i seen the video of the cable snapping after making this comment, i see the cable is the weak link not the saw, got the tractor winch now aswell, if you go back to using the lewis alot id love to see some 1/4" or 5/16" cable on it and pulling a few logs at a time as fast as it can manage, the clutch slipping on the chainsaw should be the weak point in the system

  • @1d1hamby
    @1d1hamby 3 года назад +1

    I can't believe that you're still pulling only one log at a time. That winch setup should be able to pull several logs at a time.

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  3 года назад +1

      I was only pulling 1 log here as there was only 1 log in this spot that I needed. I do pull multiple logs assuming my anchor is secured. I likely wouldn’t have been able to pull multiple logs with my atv as an anchor unless I secure my atv to a tree
