  • Lewis chainsaw winch pulling logs around corners with a corner block is what I'm tackling today on Sawing with Sandy. I'm always in search of a more efficient log winching setup for remote areas where I can't get heavy equipment to. With the addition of this corner block, I hope to make getting logs out of tight spots easier and faster without having to reposition my Lewis chainsaw winch. Although this corner block is designed for a rope, I'm using it with my 3/16" steel cable today and hoping that it performs as it should. Check out my release mechanism that I rigged up near the hook of the chocker chain to allow the cable to easily jump off the corner block when it reaches it. With a bit of practice this corner block seems to be a great addition to a small portable winch like this one as long as you account for the slack that gets put into the steel cable as soon as the winch line comes off the corner block. Be sure to check out the hitch setup I use to keep the lewis mk2 winch steady as I wind up all 150' of the cable in even rows. As time goes on and I get more time out the in the woods using this winch, the more I'm liking it's versatility. Glad you fine folks are all here, let's get down to it!

    I like the yellow nose cone. It REALLY cuts down on wind resistance.
    Also brush resistance.

    That corner block works well. It is very similar in operation to a self releasing snatch block. Very useful piece of kit for getting those logs from hard to reach areas of your property.

    Yep that's a snatch block.... the sides are called cheeks.... yours only has one cheek. There are some that have cheeks that swivel open to allow rope or cable into the sheave without having to thread it through from the bitter end... Nice kit... especially the yellow skidder thingy...

    Sandy i have been using a poly that one side opens but i like your better mine i have to walk to it open it up and remove the cable a poly like your will save me some walking but i really like your cone is it something you made or something you can buy i like the fact that once the log is in the cone it will go over stump brush and more

    Nice use of the china 070. Have a few S 076 always question when starting. That yellow plastic and the little piece that disconnects at the pulley so cool. Not know if you stated the names, but cool demonstration as always.

    You're wearing my go to outfit! Doesn't a red/black flannel make you feel the part!? Had a thought, would it be possible to mount the Lewis winch setup on one side of a sawmill and pull heavy logs onto the rails of the mill? Great video to watch while I enjoy my Monday morning pot of coffee! 🌲👍👋✌

    I can not afford a winch, but looking at the cone, I [pull logs with my Chevy Trailblazer car, and it has no problem pulling them. Have been working along the edge of the woods in a field, but will start pulling logs out of the woods using a 200 foot skidding rope and the cone should make things a lot smoother.

    You have a lot of blow downs to deal with wow,‘great that you have a mill. Have you ever considered getting a skidding winch for the Kioti? 150 feet of cable and 3-4 chokers would make this more efficient. You may not be able to get that close with your tractor though.
    Always enjoy your videos. Keep up the great work.

      Glad you liked the video Russel. Good point about the skidding winch. I’ve looked into them a little bit but the price tag of around 5000 Canadian is the big hurdle for me

    Off topic..... do the new tighter bushings you installed recently on the sawmill interfere with the performance of the lap siding attachment (i.e. raising or lowering one side of the saw head) ?

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  3 года назад +2

      I’ve not found any issues with the bushings. I adjusted them initially and sprayed silicone lube on them and they’ve worked well

    I believe they are called a self releasing snatch block.

    That corner block worked well for turning the log toward your location. You mentioned that your ATV crept a bit while winching. I too have a ATV and would be worried about the parking brake slipping. Any thoughts about tying off your ATV using a front winch and cable or chain/pull strap to a tree to secure it better? Thanks for sharing. Cheers!

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  3 года назад +1

      I think tying off the machine is a good idea. Likely I"ll end up having to do this at some point . May even just take my ATV winch cable and hook it to something.

      Sounds like we've both got a good name! In this case I don't think it doubles the pulling force since the cable is only being redirected and not pulling back towards the log. It sure has been a great tool though and one that's getting a lot of use around here. Glad you tuned in Ken. All the best.
