Valery Gergiev is AMAZING! He was born to become a conductor.

the finale...oh my god...gave me chills and tears...the horn solo, the tempo he takes it at, when the tympani rolls and brass start, holy SHIT...and i've never heard the last chord held out that long, it adds a whole new dimension to the ending that no other performance of the piece has.

Conductor looks like the secret lovechild of Harry Enfield and Giles Brandreth disguised as a physics teacher. But it's still the best I've seen on youtube. Such emotion is very hard to convey but he does a magnificent job. Thank you Mr Stravinski and bravo Mr conductor.

Anyone else noticed that sustended note in the coda by that amazing trumpet? WOW! Never heard such think! Once again, Gergiev, doesnt seem to disappoint and drives the audience mad with his somewhat personnal touches, like that extremely end chord! Bravo

You are so lucky to play under Gergiev and Stravinsky at that. You have touched the feet of the gods.

Gergiev becomes music when he tackles what is dear to him. True musicianship recalls the magic of that which we anticipate or hope for and it is just fullfilled right here. Bravo!

Absolutely the best version of this piece on RUclips! The ending is all Gergiev. Man the man loves music!

I am just in awe every time I listen to the last five minutes of this... He builds so slowly, keeping the tension bottled up even through the final horn solo. You can just feel the energy of it being held back. Amazing.
Going to see him conduct the Mariinsky Orchestra at Memorial Hall at UNC tomorrow night - Mahler's 6th.

I heard sounds that I've never heard before in Firebird. Gergiev is a master of clarity. Not the wall of sound that a lot of symphony orchestras present. Outstanding! Thrilling!

Absolutely the best version of this piece on RUclips! The ending is all Gergiev. Man the man loves music! I can remember the first time I heard the Finale on the Yessongs Album at the beginning; it openned a whole new door in my musical tastes!

Fantastic and powerful performance from Gergiev with the Vienna Phil. How he keeps the tension at 2.21, together with the VPO's unique pp is nothing short of a miracle. Funny what happens at 4.58 (pick a tempo!) :) Orchestra sort of takes over for a moment, but really, who cares...

I am glad you took my comment as being polite. I hit enter, read over it, and thought that I may come off as a jerk. I also admire people with perfect pitch. Your life is a hard one when it comes to music. I know most European instruments are tuned higher, A442-445. Americans prefer a darker sounded compared to their European counterparts. Grats on being able to discern the difference.

wonderful on the horn solo!!! slightly above the pitch but still a wonderful sound!!! i love playing french horn!!!

Gergiev conducts with his body. His entire person seeps music and thus the players absorb his energy. There's no need for a beat as all is conveived by the sheer presence of a conductor that knows that the orchestra 'will' followw him and produce intense results.

Showmanship can be brilliant in many cases inspiring - Stokowski, Bernstein, Karajan etc... But it can also fail, like anything.
This however is spectacular interpretation and performance from the Russian Maestro.

  • @MrAkihiros

@highlandsh How can you say there is no development in the last minutes of the piece? Stravinsky may be repeating the same theme over and over but the way be built it into a massive spine -tingling climax is his genius. If there's no development there wouldn't be any climax, just repetition.

now my ear is not the best in the world, but this is the Vienna Philharmonic! I too am a horn player and fervent admirer of the Vienna horn's sound. Could your above pitch comment be due to it being the Vienna Phil, a brighter sounding orchestra? Just a question. Thank you

well im from america and maybe they tune to a higher frequency than what im used to hearing over here. I do have perfect pitch tho...just sounded a bit high too me...maybe A442...i mean nobody plays perfectly in tune at all times of course...i just observed that frequency when i heard it...its ensemble wide tho, they are slightly above what i am used to hearing...esp on that solo
its still a beautiful sound tho...thanks for asking politely lol

This conductor is doing way too much showmanship. I hate that. That´s abosultely not neccessary in order to obtain the best possible performance from the orchestra. Other conductors with less seizure appear much more serious to me. The best performance has been done by Maestro Stravinsky conducting himself many many years ago. But this is whatsoever my opinion...
