Hey, I realize this is a year old but there are those of us out here that are just starting out again (after about 50 years out of the hobby) 😆 Anyway, it was just what I was looking for. I've got a rather large track planned patterned after the Portland international raceway here in Oregon and it's going to be 30 ft. Long and 12 ft wide so I've got a lot of track to paint! This is going a long way in giving me some direction. Too many tracks I see are painted just gray and that's not at all what I was looking for. This is much more like it, thanks again. Cheers!
Absolutely gorgeous. Best scenery slot car in the world. And it s not rocket science. And you share it. That s just pure gold. Thanks for the video and for the lesson! Keep em coming! Cheers from Brazil!
@@BoonesSlotCarGarage You're welcome. I'm still going through your other videos. Have to say, I really appreciate all the reasoning and thought giving on each step of the application. I'll be sure to sub.
Hi Boone just watched all three of your track painting videos again and can't tell you how much of an inspiration you are for me to try some of these methods on my scalextric layout, just got to pluck up the courage and get to it! Thanks again great video series 👍
Great video as always like the look of the track and skid marks. Can't wait for following videos as we been thinking about painting our ho scale track.
Great video as always, did a test piece myself and this stuff is great. For anyone painting Carrera track make sure to use black primer first or the dashed line will show through, on the other hand if you’re going for a road style look skip the primer and the paint will make it look like old road where the lines have faded away
Track looks awesome! I had thought about trying the textured paint but didn't like the looks of it. But once you added the Black racing line, skid marks & white boarder, it really sold it for me. Looks great!!!!
Awesome, Boone! The thing I dislike most of the Scaley Sport track is the lack of grip vs Classic track. This is particularly prevalent on the R1 hairpin, as you pointed out. I am definitely going to try this!
Thank you 😊, no primer needed with this material. It has a very high solvent base content to the paint. And with the prepping and cleaning it has plenty of mechanical bonding to have great adhesive properties. Primer could be used if you wanted but I would recommend using a dark grey or black for primer. One of the advantages of using this over a dark substrate is that the paint has a translucent finish. The black track helps give the color that true realism look to the finished product with a few coats of color.
If you read this? I'm just wondering if you can make the rails black. I know that they make a formula to turn model railroad wheels black, and that it doesn't interfere with the electric contact. Again, just wondering.
Thanks David, I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. As long as it doesn’t interfere with the electrical flow. Only question I would have is if it would last. Being that our slot cars drag around a set of braids on the rails. Would it wear off over time . But it would be worth a try. Definitely would improve the overall look of the track for sure.
BOONE! I love your channel! Absolutely brilliant content mate! 👍 Given me loads of ideas and tips to help me with my future projects 1 I plan on making a super realistic monte Carlo f1 track and also building a 1:64 scale hot wheels race track I might even put em on RUclips 👍 looking forward to your future videos so happy I subscribed 😁
Love this idea I have a few areas on my track I might use this … also I saw someone use strong magnets for trees and light poles … so you can remove them and put them back in place and they are “break away” if you have cats like me …
Thanks bud… yes this does increase tire grip majorly….and as long as you prep the track properly it has very good longevity. The areas of my layout that I have painted the track have not worn or shown any wear .
Hi John.. that is a future video. I have a couple different track painting techniques that I want to video still. And router MDF tracks is one of them . Hope to film these soon..
Boone, if you are looking for another layout to show your magic on. I'll volunteer my new soon to be routered track, it's currently waiting for decent weather to route.
Great vid. I wonder how much better a track would work just from cleaning the release agent off it? Doesnt sound good for traction to have something slick on it.
It would improve it some , the only issue I could see with this is over time , it will pull the oils from the plastic making it brittle. It doesn’t effect this when you paint it because it seals the surface and prevents it from decomposing…
Thanks buddy, that’s the plan … but I’m going to show a few different techniques on the painting process along the way… lots of different ways of painting track, plus I have a few effects planned as well to show how to do while I’m at it
That would work, but i prefer to have the ability to remove track if i need to. Gluing them together kinda defeats the purpose of that. But it would give it a nice look
Booneman this is cal I have a 60 ft artin 143 scale plastic track that has no texture thus it is very slick. They do not make silicone tires for the artin cars. Would course sandpaper work to add texture to track surface when using rubber tires. If not what is the best paint to add grip
Rough sand paper could work, but it’s not going to be the most attractive surface on your track… this video with the stone paint has awesome grip .. all the track painting videos i have improve the grip of the track . But this 1 technique is by far the best when it comes to providing a high grip surface
Hey Boone, me again. next step is to paint the track since i dont like the black look. how you painted your track, love it. since i dont have Krylon "black granite" in Switzerland ill try to order it online. my track is 65 feet or about 20meters lang, what do you think how many do i need?
I would suggest around 6 cans , but you could use a spray can grey primer 1st as a base coat, this would help the texture paint to go further and cover more area…
@@BoonesSlotCarGarage so you mean take a "normal" grey for the 1st coat and two more with the black granite? i like the white line, what do you think if you make first the white line and than the whole track with the "black granite"?
@@stefannauer4096 you could do that, my rule of thumb is too much material buildup can be a bad thing… as your material layers become thicker, the durability and adhesion will start to suffer…but this could be done , just recommend that to try to keep it to a minimal thickness if possible
@@stefannauer4096 I try to keep it to a minimum, it can very depending on the material being used. Some products cover faster than others… the video in reference here took around 3 coats to achieve this look. If a grey primer was used 1st , I believe it would be only 2 coats for coverage
Hey booneman do you have any video showing the difference in how they hold the track before and after painting with the one can method I and about ready to start my project thankyou my friend this is cal your loyal follower
Hi Cal , I don’t have a video showing the grip increase, but it is a substantial increase. If you want the cars to slightly get sideways , I would suggest the multiple can technique. The single can method is pretty crazy as far as grip goes…
hey Boone, i have now watched the whole "paint your track" series and i think ill go with the first technique. with the second technique you need to have as many tracks together as possible but for the first technique it is not really necessary, right?
Correct…. The 1st technique uses just the one can … as long as you make sure to shake the can up to properly mix the material, you should be able to create the same finish between two different pieces of track
@@BoonesSlotCarGarage i plan to do races with my buddies, with technique one, you think its almost to much grip? i have a carrera digital. so track itself has already some grip
@@stefannauer4096 not sure … you might want to try a small area first and see if you like it. I generally run without magnets, I like the way the cars perform on this technique.. but I also have a large track with a few different surface types… I recommend trying a corner with this a see if you like it
