- "What is a normal amount of orange peel in a car paint job?", is a common question. By taking a look at some factory paint that uses the best practices we can easily come to a conclusion on what can be expected. Tools, materials and Lakeside Merch below:

Great video Bud!! I always said, If you have to wet sand and buff a new paint job you're doing something wrong!! Unless you're bringing the car to SEMA!!☻
Thanks 👍 RK - good to hear from you - hope all is well 😊
Another great video! It’s been a while since I’ve commented but I was busy using all the techniques you taught me (not personally, I used your videos and wrote you a lot) to repair both my daughters 1979 F150 and my sons 1989 Corvette. Your videos were an invaluable resource to me as beginner, however my results were way better than that. Thank you as always! Dave from Connecticut
That kind of stuff makes my day Dave - thanks for sharing that. You're son and daughter will remember that for sure. Glad the videos helped. Have a great weekend my friend :)
Thanks again Jerry for more info to help us all!
You're welcome Mark - thanks for checking it out :)
Good and informative video as usual. I'm a DIY ER painter I'm not perfect I'm maybe a couple of steps down from those vehicles.
Nothing that a quick cut and buff won't fix.. Have to give you the credit Jerry got most of my info. from your videos over the years.
Have great week and thanks. Bob.
I really appreciate that Bob - good to hear. With all the different clears and prices today it's going to be difficult to get a perfect paint job - some run easier, etc. Glad to hear you like the content my friend :)
Thanks Jerry, another great one. Learning is a lot about learning when to stop and what you don't need to know. Why bang your head against the wall if you are already "there" or within spec
👍😊 - thanks for checking it out PV - have a good weekend.
Hey Jerry, that white looked like the metallic brown primer I sprayed on the El Camino😂😂
You've got a good sense of humor Billy - I can tell you'd be interesting to talk to for sure. Have a good weekend and thanks for checking it out :)
Hey Jerry, I am more interested in my paint job lasting and able to take some abuse.
How would I go about that? Enamel? Epoxy? Base Coat / Clear Coat?
And how many coats?
When I was in High School I had a 1963 Rambler and the paint held up great!
If it's a solid color go with single stage urethane (TCP Global, PAINTFORCARS, NASON, etc.) If metallic BC/CC is easier. Feel free to ask more ?s if needed :)
@@LakesideAutobody Thank you, I appreciate your professional advice. How many coats would you recommend? And, if by chance, I decide to repaint (1996 Dodge Ram) with its original base coat clear coat, how many coats of base and clear do you suggest for a more durable job?
I'm a body shop guy. Production shops do 2 coats of clear. Show cars have a minimum of 3 coats clear. You can also buy high solids clear which is very durable and perfect for a cut and buff. Hope this helps😊
@@speedracer210 Thank you!
Thanks for showing us what to expect and aim for. Seldom is there an affordable perfect paint job. Have a great weekend
Thanks 👍- you're right about that. To get the clear that really lays down you have to pay the $.
So ironic I’ve been talking a lot about orange peel at work recently and i stumble upon this. Estimator in training here, looking forward to browsing your channel 👍
Thanks. At the shops I worked at many times the boss would try to save the person their deductible (what ever that meant) but would ask if I could repair it instead of replacing the panel. That's why you'll see some stuff on this channel that should have been replaced but was fixed - that may come in handy for you somehow :)
@@LakesideAutobody Hell yea!
Just got a 2024 Mustang. Looks the same. Happy with it.
Congrats - great car! 👍
i have foudn that very useful. when i paint, im trying to get as good a finish as i can, but that shows maybe some times im trying too hard. plus also, you can polish and buff out a lot of stuff.
thanks agian
You're welcome. Also, It's good to know that some clears and paints flow out or lay down better than others. You get what you pay for - sort of thing :)
Great vid as always Jerry !
I appreciate that Stephen - have a great weekend :)
I had a 1976 Triumph Spitfire with an enamel paint job and it had a mirror smooth finish. Is it possible for DIYers to do enamel paint jobs? It sure did look nice, but there must be a reason why manufacturers aren’t doing them these days.
There's a lot of enamel out there. Try TCP Global Restoration Shop or NASON - here's the NASON - ruclips.net/video/2H3UHCgQu2Q/видео.html
@@LakesideAutobody Thank you!!!
I recall a 87? Chevy, new truck. Owner took it back to the dealer as the orange peel annoyed him. I dont recall what the remedy was.
Thanks Frank - they may have buffed it out for him :)
I thought that most of the manufacturers used automated sprayers to keep imperfections out?
They do. This video is to show that even though their environment, tools, and paint are top of the line, they are still getting a bit of orange peel.
Just measured a broken flake off a 22 gmc canyon fender (sealer-base-clear) .004" yikes 😱don't even think about cut+buffing it flat
That's pretty thin - .006" is about a hair I think. Thanks for watching :)
Awesome video!
Thanks MN - always good to hear from you :)
Do y'all do customers vehicles? or work with other youtubers?
I flip rust buckets and pick up clean title repairables from COPART, etc. City has their eye on me the last few years 😒
@LakesideAutobody darn, I'm looking for someone to work with on a truck I just got. I mostly do tractors but I just got a 95 f250
My neighbors 2023 F150 has the worst factory paint I've ever seen. Transparent on the jambs and more orange peel than an orange
That's crazy. For ~80K the paint should be perfect 👍😊
👍👍
Thanks :)
Why is any orange peel acceptable?
Because you will always have some no matter what YT, magazines & blogs say, and to me it's better to cut and buff any parts that may be unacceptable, than it is o try and push it, get very little OP and end up with runs. Odds are you will get runs if you push it. Sound legit?
@@LakesideAutobody absolutly! I am by no means an expert painter, but I can't stand orange peel lol. I would rather wet sand all day long till it's gone rather than look at it. Love your vids.
If it's not real bad' you can use 3m super duty buffing compound and buff orange peel out enough to get by without having to color sand it.
I'm trying to be respectful but the video is totally useless you made no points?? I mean do certain car manufacturers paint cars better than others??? I can say a lot more but I'm going to watch some of your other videos and give you the benefit of the doubt ...but this video just did nothing for me
The point is that a lot of videos on YT show zero orange peel but that's not reality. It's super easy to get no orange peel on flat surfaces but very difficult around body lines and vertical panels - you'll run it right off the car.
@@LakesideAutobody I appreciate you writing back... The point I'm trying to make is why don't you make a video that shows how to paint a car without orange peel??? Why do some painters paint better than others??
