  • "A single line - in Ireland - where the historical Ballybunion Mono-Railway ran."*
M/S of a strange looking train moving towards the camera. Engine driver climbs down and goes to the front of the engine. He pushes on the track to turn the engine around to face the opposite direction. L/S of the train approaching. As it nears the camera it stops and passengers get out of tiny carriages. C/U of the front of the train. The train starts up and moves off. Children wave from the carriages. High angle shot of the train wobbling along. Shot from the roof of the train showing the two drivers. C/U of engine driver. An unusual road bridge is lowered over the line. A horse and cart travels across.
Was an item in Pathe Pictorial issue number 701.
    * This doesn't make much sense but that's what it says!
Not sure if Ballybunion is in Northern Ireland or Southern Ireland (Republic of Ireland, Eire, Irish Republic) - can't find it on the map. Perhaps it is some kind of joke?

Thanks for this very rare film. Last ran on October 14th 1924.
A replica now running. I hope Covid issues have not closed it permanently.

Maybe it's mistaken to 1931 instead of 1913

@@TheOneAndOnlyWeeber69 maybe 1931 was just when some old footage was put together.
Newsreels often just used film for novelty effect not being historians.
Other sources say closed in 1924. The film looks to have early twenties quality and fashions.
1913 possible but they usually were lesser quality.
Captions are all in the past tense.
      Eg .....where it ran

Incredible film, there aren't too many photographs in total on this railway, so to have a film is something else and it's reasonably clear. Notice how the loco wobbles just after the whistle blows approaching the bridge! I was there the day they announced that they had funding to build a replica. It was on a farm at Lissleton where there were the remains of the original railway put together which I'm sure must have been relocated now to the museum at Listowel.

This cannot be in 1931; it ceased operations in 1924 and was dismantled.
