Yes. He exploited her. There’s no excuse for putting someone who is incapable of genuine consent into the spotlight. Terrible violation of medical privacy. He ceased renewing his license in 2006 - otherwise I suspect it would be revoked. Sickening.

Yeah well its no news that everything Dr. Phil has ever released on television goes against any of the morality of what psychologist is supposed to hold long before Shelly Duvall. The only surprising thing is that this guys shows where allowed to air and that he has a doctorate in psychology. At least shows like Jerry Springer didn't put on the façade as if they where helping people, and only exploiting people with mental issues.
I was on Dr. Phil. I was promised help and therapy for myself and my children, after being married to an addict. After we taped, I was suddenly told that their "legal team" decided that they couldn't get involved with our family. Absolute bait and switch. I can't stand him now.

There were people including her family, who advised her not to go on his show but in the end she ultimately chose to unfortunately. Yes it’s too bad it couldn’t have been stopped. I absolutely agree. She wasn’t capable of making good decisions at that time.
She has a partner, Dan Gilroy, who said he knew nothing about this interview until it was done. No doubt, Phil's crew kept Dan in the dark, because I doubt he would ever want that for his Shelley.
As a physician, I wish I could list all the elements of that interview that crossed over any reasonable ethical lines. His regret for how it was portrayed is simply trying to deflect the anger. that is reasonably directed toward him. He (at least is reported to be) is a healthcare professional. That comes with responsibilities. He was wrong by any reasonable measure. He's too conceited to acknowledge the fact. He did NOT put this woman's mental health first.
He didn't even apologize for how it was portrayed! He regrets that "people THOUGHT it was unbecoming", which is of course a total backhanded non-apology

A former therapy client of McGraw's filed a complaint in the late 1980s with the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists, alleging that the psychologist carried on a controlling and sometimes sexually inappropriate relationship with her. She was not the only one. Texas State Board took his license to practice with individuals yet can do group therapy.

Narcissists like Dr. Phil can never accept any kind of blame, because they perceive themselves as perfect people. So nothing can ever be their fault. It's a delusion, but one which they will destroy others' lives to enforce.
It made me feel more compassionate towards the mentally ill. My heart goes out to people who suffer from such things. Shelley Duvall was/is(?) such a talented and beautiful actress. She has a beautiful smile. 🌹

Dr. Phil has never been a doctor. So when you get these unqualified people to address serious issues, you're going to get inadequate treatment, and conclusions.
Well that's just not true. Dr. Phil was a highly qualified psychology proffesional and was absolutely a Dr. Hes still entitled to use his Dr. Title but has not been allowed to practice since 2016 as he refused to renew his license.

It’s Heartbreaking when any illness strikes.
Homeless people are comprised of 1 or more of the following: 1) mentally ill (many severely), 2) drug addicts 3) current or previous criminals 4) misfortune.
The vast majority are severely mentally ill. With a smaller % who fell on hard times.
The USA needs to help the mentally sick. Their options are suffering on the streets, doing long term prison time, or death.
I think drug addicts would be number 1, then mental illness

I used to watch Dr.Phil. One day my daughter asked me what happened to all the people who he had interviewed. The guests just faded off into the ether. I realized it was exploitative and demeaning and was possibly adding further trauma to the families. Anyone who dosen't see his trainwreck guests make us feel better about our lives 8s fooling themselves. I just couldn't bear to see the pain of others on television anymore
I saw a more recent interview with Shelley Duvall and she is nowhere near as crazy as they made her look on that show.

@@ryanmalone2681 There's no physical violence, but the Dr. has been accused of, among many things, providing liquor to alcoholic guests to make their appearance on the show more dramatic and bolster ratings.
Pretending that you can "cure" somebody with mental problems in a 50 minute episode is the worst of his sins. He does offer after treatment for many of his guests, but I suspect these are treatment companies with which he has cozy and highly profitable business relationships.

His face is so emotionless besides the few times he gave off a slight chuckle in fact every time he had to admit to something he would look down or couldn't make direct eye contact at all you can tell he is really thinking about how to say what he needs to say while also blaming it on anyone but himself. He also tried to hide it but you can see he is trying to restrain his fingers from fidgeting. Idk if anyone else has noticed these things . The fact that he is targeting the homeless is a big tell all to what he actually is trying to do. Now that he can no longer attack just the mentally ill or behavioral problems he is going for the next big thing. If he honestly wanted to help he would be doing that already. It's crazy how some RUclipsrs and tiktokers can do that and even people who don't have a camera up in their face and be genuine about it and actually get these people help, housing, work and a friend. This is mental illness. I haven't seen that interview but it does seem a bit exploitative. But also it's necessary to see mental illness as it can be.
I saw her more recently in a much friendlier interview- she’s just got typical grandma- aged thought dysfunction. Gets lost in a train of thought, jumps ahead to a different subject without informing anyone, forgets a word and uses simpler words to fill in the blank until it comes back to her. It’s probably going to happen to you soon enough, Phil, better be gracious while you still can.
Also, she seems to be surrounded by people who respect and appreciate her, and has therapists SHE has selected guiding her through her mental health challenges. She lives on a lovely ranch, looks pretty happy. Just old.
