    People in the comments writing that learning to spell is not useful in the future is missing the point. It takes a serious level of focus, dedication, discipline and smartness at this age to win these competitions. Whatever he would do in the future, you can just assume he will have an higher chance of success than the regular folks.

      Knowing how to spell THIS well at their age takes so much discipline, dedication, and work ethic. Also, spelling bee competitors are passionate, musical, artistic, and curious about the way the world works. I would say these skills are VERY valuable in the job market and as they apply them to their academic endeavors!

      @pakiiscurse9719 like i said, its SPELLING, don't confuse traits with eachother, I've seen people with perfect memory be the dumbest creatures on the plannet, maybe thats because my standards are high, but I've learned the hard way that you should never asume things beyond what you've seen

      Fair discussion. To some degree I agree with both of you. True about the work ethic and the discipline, but I've never assumed that these kids are team players who can socially interact very well. Of course some jobs don't require that. Perhaps it depends on the person. Some kids are just great at everything. It always seemed to me that a large number of spelling bee finalists were homeschooled, which again can be good or bad on a social level.

    Remembering the spelling of obscure words is totally useless. It is good to be able to spell well but these days with online dictionaries and spell checkers as a fallback, what's the point?

    • @TheMrchandu
      @TheMrchandu Год назад +2

      You miss the whole point. It's not about his ability to spell difficult words. It is about his determination, focus and his hard work that he put in to win the competition. It may be easier for you to search in google and people like him code in the backend for making your life easier.

      you have to be really stupid to think reading, spelling and a proper understanding of language (things you gain from spelling) are useless. i can tell you didn't read much as a child if you have to use an online dictionary for any other purpose than double checking or learning a word you use rarely.
