    Good catch on this episode, the network HATED the pilot after it was completed and asked him to write essentially another pilot, that was on a Friday, and he had to deliver this script the following Monday! And he once again nailed it. The first 6 episodes are all really written as little pilots, making sure new viewers could tell what was going on and who everyone was, it was in joss's contract that had had a GARENTEED 22 episode season, the episodes would be aired in order, and the first six would be aired without a break... NONE of which happened, to make matters worse fox had no faith in the show and dumped it on their Friday night death slot where no show had flourished since x files... so of course... it didn't, which is a shame, the ratings it got then weren't horrible but not good enough, if it had aired now with the same ratings it would be considered a huge hit :(

    • @arcplayer
      @arcplayer 4 года назад +5

      To make matters worse episodes were preempted for Major League Baseball games and a Brady Bunch reunion movie. Some of those were aired at two or three in the morning without letting anyone know so that they could stay up or set a VCR. I was lucky enough to catch Firefly from this episode. As I was watching it I kept thinking that this is great but I must have missed the pilot last week.

      I almost gave the show a pass after watching this as the 1st episode. If gave me the sci-fi I hate, sci-fi reskinned from another genre. Fortunately I was dying for sci-fi, any sci-fi, so I stuck with it. Good thing I did.

    Joss wrote the one hour two part pilot (what you watched first) and was pushing the network to air that first. The network disagreed and told him to write a new pilot episode over a weekend (this episode) that was more action packed and got into more of what a week to week episode would be like. So there is ton of exposition in this episode, because it was going to air first. But to be able to write a quality 45 minute episode (half a movie script) in one weekend is more proof to me that this series was Whedon's masterpiece. You had to be in love with this Universe to be able to pull something like this off.

    In the DVD extras, it's revealed that you're right about the world building. Joss was influenced by the book "The Killer Angels", about the losing side of the American Civil War. Also good call about the mix of Chinese, he envisioned in the future everyone spoke English and Chinese all the time because of the evolution of the mix of superpowers. (Now we've got Covid, so who knows...) Oh yeah, don't watch the DVD extras til you see the whole season. But then definitely watch it. It will make you weepy.

    The FOX network execs didn't like/didn't get the pilot episode. They wanted something with more action. That's where The Train Job comes in. Joss purposely added the brief recap about the war at the beginning since this was going to be the premiere episode.

    Having this as the second episode was a bad mistake on Fox's part. I was a huge Buffy fan back in the day so was excited to see this series. I watched this supposed pilot episode and was left confused and underwhelmed (I still think it's actually a weak episode compared to most of the others) and didn't catch the next episode. I then picked up the DVD box set for cheap around a year later and it became one of the best series I've ever seen. It cannot be understated how much Fox fucked up with Firefly and how many shows since then have been influenced by it. Think about it, this was basically a TV show of Millenium Falcon + Guardians of the Galaxy, a station would kill for that now! I've never heard anyone who has watched Firefly complain about the real pilot episode though.

    The way Fox handled this series has puzzled fans for years and years. Somehow the Fox suits were immune or oblivious to what was blindingly obvious to the rest of us, that Firefly was well written, funny, sad, dramatic and just damn good. Can we just appreciate how bold it was to write that kicking that... soldier or whatever he was into the turbine? They managed to mix a little bit of dark comedy into a pretty serious scene just for the sake of character development, but it's not unbelievable either. Mal is a man who knows when another man means what he means when he looks you in the face and tells you he's going to kill you. They established that in the opening sequence of the show. "The last thing you see will be my blade." He believed him. So... he kinda had to die right then and there. It comes of as cheesy and cringey with the violin in the background until you think about it and accept that it's actually pretty believable, and if you had read the scene in a book, you'd probably take it pretty seriously.
    Yeah. This show just didn't get a fair chance. Shame. I'm not one to say it was perfect and didn't fall short in some areas, but where it excelled, it really won me over. Character development was extraordinarily good in this show. It only got better with age too which sucks. It's like they were right at the brink of turning this thing into a Game of Thrones level masterpiece and then it just died.

    The FOX network did everything they could to sabotage Firefly. FOX rejected the first pilot at the last minute and Joss Whedon had to write a new pilot script at the last minute. This second episode is that reworked pilot. Be certain to watch these in Whedon's intended order as FOX broadcast them out of order to disrupt the story flow.

      Serenity was the original pilot but Fox didn't like it and demanded a new, shorter, more action-packed pilot. Joss then wrote The Train Job to fulfil this role.
      The DVD has the episodes in Joss's preferred order which has Serenity as Ep1 and Train Job as Ep2.
