- Looking for some opinions and thoughts on where to mount this grab bar! Let me know down in the comments and share this video with someone who may be able to help on the topic!
This is where I got the grab bar - www.marinefibe...
The way its placed in the video, seems to be the best position I could find. I like being able to put my foot on top of it and being able to plant my other foot up against the seat. It looks good though and seems to take up an awkward amount of space.
I do want to add a clamp on rod holder onto the grab bar and maybe some other things, so give me some ideas for that!
I was just looking for some thoughts from others that may have dealt with this before and could lend some pro's and con's of how their set up is and what they would change with their grab bar.

I got this grab bar from Marine Fiberglass Direct here - www.marinefiberglassdirect.com/collections/35-handrails-grab-bars/products/marine-dock-boat-35-hand-rail-grab-bar-flat-base - they seemed to have the cheapest price when I was researching to buy one and I always liked this style over the side mounted grab bars because I never liked the idea of putting a hole through the boat to the outside. This seemed easy enough to mount on the floor and was a good price.
Thanks for showing a grab bar
I just ask you about one
Thanks again
Yeah, no problem. A lot of guys have started to use hand cart or dolly handles for their jon boats as a grab bar also
Can you reach it if you fall out of the boat.
I never mounted the grab bar. I wanted to keep the open floor. When I get in the boat from the water I choose to use the front part of the bow. It's nice and open and stays steady. I can also tie a rope with a loop to step in since I have multiple anchor points up there too. If I try the transom, the engine is always in the way and the transom sits too low to the water. If I do the side, the edge gets too close to the water. So if I had a choice I use the bow.
Never thought of that angle. I have kinda of had it in my mind to do mine horizontal (left to right). Im also looking to buy the exact bar you have, they got em on ebay from a marine supplier out of Boca. I was thinking of mounting it in the center (left to right) and far enough forward that i can swing the handle back and forth comfortably without hitting it. My reason is so when I have to make tight turns the torque wants to rip the handle out of my hand while at the same tim i have to lean in the other direction to help turn the boat. Having it in the middle would give me something to lean on to help steer while focusing on holding onto the handle. If you mout it to the side like you pictured, my theory would still work but turning better in on direction over another.
just realized a major flaw in my logic: If I did that I wont be able to swing the shaft on the center of the boat for transport.......
That was one of the main contributors to putting it sideways was so I could still put the longtail in the center of the boat while transporting it. As you stated, I did think of positioning it far enough forward so that I could comfortably turn the tiller handle any way I needed to without getting squooshed or losing my balance. I never really find myself having to lean much to steer the boat but next time I'm out, I will test all the ideas I get in the comments and play around with it more to see how it goes. Thank you for your input, Louis! 👊
JTgatoring look up some videos by a young guy "MAD/S Life" he has some where he is leaning to steer the boat and a video or 2 where his passenger is leaning on one side or the other to steer. It really helps, especially at high speeds. The grab bar provides balance but I plan on using it to help me steer/control the boat in low speed sharp turns and at high speed situations.
Hmm alright I'll make sure to give that a try when I'm out next and I'll check out those videos by MAD/S Life
So what's the verdict I'm sure you guys have it sorted now save me the trouble lol.
All things considered you use your right hand so steer so it seems like a logical position.
I think you have your mind made up. The diagonal looks comfortable. My vote is definitely to reinforce plywood and bolt with good size hardware and washers so you can cinch that baby down.
I agree with you @jackaxe2012! I will definitely need some good hardware and support for this grab bar. I just wanted to see how many good ideas I could get from others, go out there and test them all, and then commit to one. Thank you for the input! I really appreciate it
Love it! Keep up the good work!
Another thing is I would reinforce the back of the plywood with a piece of aluminum about the size of the on on the grab bar or bigger no matter where you end up mounting the bar. unless yuou got super lucky and mounted it with thos rivet nuts to a rib.
I've had a few people say that so I'm guessing it would be a good idea to reinforce it hahaha if I ever get THAT lucky to be able to mount it to the ribs with the riv nuts, my luck would be too good 😂
JTgatoring lol one can only hope!
You think a single bolt down location in the center of floor plate would work, with a "t" nut, on bottom of floor plwd.and a threaded Knob, this way can be adjusted, rotated, changed to suit different users, could also slot groove bottom plate, for more adjustabity, like your vid,s Got me to get a Tracker 1542,now building a 13hp sps, thanks
Don,t know he's stiff your floor is,might have to re unforced floor under bracket, double 1/2"ply,gorilla glued and screwed.
That's why I made this video. I love that idea! I would have never thought of that. I think no matter how I mount it, I think I'm going to have to reinforce it. Thank you @pacnscoutr! Very nice! Everyone always seems to put the 22hp on the 1542 and I've always been interested in how the 13hp would do, please let me know how it goes!
Whatever u comfortable with bro. But I would recommend you adding a support to that bar some were. Either another to the bottom or the side. But good video
I was thinking I needed to add some support to it as you and others have said. I will probably put a backer plate on the underside of the deck like I did for the tiller handle holder. Thanks for the input @C Price!
JTgatoring you could do that. But if u sit back and look at it, the grab bar is a big lever. If u don't add a support up high down to another point, it could snap easy. Especially if u hit something and you feel forward. Just my thought bro 👍👍👍
C Price Yeah that's a good point. What would you do to add some support to it from up high?
JTgatoring u can get some kind of emt conduit
What ever works for you:-) Did you see how mine was mounted? I love it.
Is your grab bar directly in the center or is it off to one side? I can not tell. If it's in the center, do you have any issue with transporting your longtial?
JTgatoring it’s off to the left ; not centered. The tail I can swing around and secure it to the bar during transport.
I’m gonna have to make a video to show how I did it.
That was the reason why I have it positioned that way in the video. It was off center enough so that the tail could swing up and into the boat without issue. I guess no matter what, I'll just have to put it off center
Where ever works for you....mine is in the side of the boat its a beaver dam t handle 1
