  • Join me as I head to Dreamland Margate for the first time in 3 years to check out everything this historic seaside amusement park has to offer as of summer 2022. In this vlog I share on ride POV's from the classic Scenic Railway, a wooden roller coaster that originally opened in 1920. Along with that I check out the other changes at the park since my previous visit along with talking about the difficult history of the park. Let's hope that this classic amusement park continues to operate and the Scenic Railway lives on for future generations to enjoy!

Great to see Dreamland back open this year however it’s only open at weekends and school holidays !! Such a shame this classic park has had a rocky history and things were looking up for it a few years ago and when the Pandemic hit in 2020 this was pretty much the only park in the UK that didn’t reopen, really hope Dreamland can survive and as Shawn says please make a visit this year if you haven’t already been on the Scenic as it might not been around forever

It’s so sad to see Margate like it is..a shell of its former self.. I’m 53 year old woman and Margate dreamland back in the 80’s and 90’s was in my eyes the best theme park in Britain ..Bembom brothers did a great job back then.so sad to see a car park where the Mary rose used to live. Love to know what happened to the original big wheel that was the biggest in Europe… great show ..

I’m 52 now and I have a lot of fond memories of visiting Margate and Dreamland with my family. I’m glad to hear the Dreamland sign will be put back in place soon because it’s iconic and part of the experience when you are approaching the theme park from a distance.
When I was a youngster, around 9 years old, I fondly remember when my dad took me into the theme park, as we walked down that slope, towards the entrance doors, and my mum and the rest of the family was enjoying themselves sitting on stripy deck chairs on the sands of Margate beach. When my dad and me walked into Dreamland I was in awe, remembering the giant rollercoaster called the Looping Star, that is sadly no longer there. And other favourites, like, the Mary Rose which looked dangerous to be honest because I kept thinking what if those nuts and bolts come loose and the ship comes apart in midair. I also remember the Water Shute; You'd hop in one of the boats and try your best not to get soaked on the way down. And the Astroglide which was fun, sliding down a long slide on a straw like Matt.
It’s good to see some of the old rides intact, especially the Scenic roller coaster back in operation. Although, I do feel £5 is a bit pricey but I understand it will help pay for the restoration work and help keep the ride maintained. So it’s worth it.
I also remember the remote control boats that used steering wheels to control the boats on water for just 10p in the slot, while my dad rolled up a rizla, smoking golden Virginia tobacco in the sunshine. Things were different back then and will never be the same again, but we can recreate magic at Dreamland for future generations to appreciate and love.

It’s such a shame things never really worked out. The park was stunning after the second refit with all the new attractions. The aesthetic and overall ‘look’ of the park really and it’s landscaping is impressive- especially for what is a seaside amusement park. So sad to see so much of it closed off now.

Living in Great Yarmouth it was so nice to see Dreamland Margate in your vlog. The Scenic Railway is an absolute classic gem of a coaster and like the one here in Yarmouth has the brakeman in the middle. We now have their Pendulum ride as you stated clearly in the vlog. Whenever I see you on a ghost train I can never forget the Hotel Sycho ride in Vienna. What a ride that was. Good to see they still have some flat rides at Dreamland. Loved the PTVlogs style dodgem battle at the end, great fun👍

It would be cool if Dreamland could be the permanent home of the Carter's rides. It could be a win-win for being a home for a bunch of heritage rides and make that its core. Maybe keep the Wacky Worm for the kids, but that would be an exception and not the rule

The problem is that a majority of the rides are already vintage and pretty much the same as what Carters currently travels with but the park will still have problems so they ended up spending millions on the 10 modern rides in 2018 and still didn’t work out for them !! I think the major issue is that Margate is in a poor location for the rest of the UK to make a visit and if I still lived in Morecambe I would have never visited which I didn’t until I moved down south !! Also the Carters rides need to be housed indoors so they out of the elements and kept in good condition for years to come and not left to rot in an amusement park that’s closed most of the year next to the seaside

The time for this park was in the 90s. I went there on a school trip from Essex and it was amazing for those days. The Looping Star was there them too which I'm sure is at another park and still operating, that was my first coaster I went on with am inversion. I remember riding the original scenic railway too. They had a huge Ferris wheel and an enterprise and the Mary rose too. This was the first park where I went upside down 🤣

There does not seem to be much there now and hardly anyone in the park - surprising in the middle of August. Most of the space seemed to be taken up by the food court. It seems bare somehow.

You do such a brilliant job in promoting these parks Shawn, listening to your updates of what will open soon sounds much like the same when we visited the first reimagined Dreamland opening day in June 2015, we also visited in 2018 after all the financial issues and the park felt more complete, but focus was on the events more than the amusement park. It would be a travesty and total utter waste of Lottery Millions if Sands Heritage (assume they are still the owners) benefitted from what the council and the people of Thanet fought so hard to prevent. There are people who have done very well out of this I am sure sadly it's probably not the public. The Dodgems looked like they were back to full speed as they were on opening day, we will do as you suggest and ride both the Dodgems and Scenic this summer and just hope that perhaps this could be Carters new home?

My grandfather was a brakeman on the scenic railway in the days when Dreamland was exciting and vibrant and run by people who really cared about the park and Margate in general. It's now a sad parody of its former self run by people who are slowly grinding it into the ground no doubt with their eyes firmly fixed 10 years hence when the land can be used for houses. So very sad to see it now and even more sad that that younger residents and visitors never had the chance to see it in it's heyday 😢

At the beginning of May, me and my gf set out to the south of Spain and Portugal to visit some amusement parks and fun fairs. One of these fun fairs we visited was the Feria de Abril in Seville, located in the Spanish region of Andalusia. The program included a traveling water coaster and an inverted coaster!
So today I'm gonna tell you all a lot about the fair, so you may know what to expect:
Feria de Abril is one of the largest fun fairs in the world. The festival is held every spring in the Spanish city of Seville and attracts as many as 5 million visitors in a week. Friday is the busiest day with 850,000 visitors. The Spaniards come to the festival in traditional costume, which includes more than 1000 dance and drink tents. In addition to the gigantic funfair, you can also find parades with horse and cart, bullfights and dance parties that go on until the late hours.
This year the Feria de Abril ran from May 1 to May 7, but the fair itself was extended from April 28 to May 8. From the moment we arrived, we immediately noticed the size of this gigantic fair. All cars were diverted to an edge parking lot at the city. This parking lot was so immense that it seemed possible to park an infinite number of cars. From there, a continuous flow of buses was provided that took visitors free of charge to the Feria de Abril and brought them back to the car park until 2:30 am. What a good organization this was! They could learn a lot from this in Belgium…
The last time the event took place was in 2019, when no fewer than 9 rollercoasters were present. Unfortunately, it is not easy to get hold of the rental lists of Spanish fairs so when booking our trip we were completely guessing how many roller coasters there would be this year. In the week before our departure I had already done hours of research and that resulted in 9 roller coasters, although I had not yet been able to see images of all parts of the fair. In addition, in Spain there is often a breakdown or operators show up later, so you are never really sure. So we had to wait and see until we got there to be sure exactly how many there would be.
We hadn't been long at the fair before I immediately saw our first roller coaster that I had not spotted beforehand, so it would be 10 credits this evening. The surprise credit was named Tokito and is a children's roller coaster in the shape of an oval. To make the party complete, we also received balloons from the operator, which was a nice surprise!
A little further on we saw yet another bonus credit, with Tronkito, which would give us 11 credits that evening. This is also a children's roller coaster in the shape of an oval.
The next credit was the first of the two Dragon rollercoasters. This one was called El Nuevo Dragon Elliot.
In addition to a load of children's roller coasters, there were also 5 large rollercoasters at this fair. Of these, no fewer than 3 were wild mice with spinning carts. We soon discovered why there are 3 mice here every year. There was a queue of no less than 20 minutes at every wild mouse while the operators worked very hard. On average, there were always about 5 carts on the track, not counting the carts that were still waiting in the station.
The first of the 3 wild mice was the Raton Vacilon which had two extras over the standard wild mouse. First, there was the tunnel in the shape of a big cat's mouth into which the cart disappears. Secondly, the roller coaster contained special effects in this tunnel and the occupants could determine what would happen here via buttons on the cart. I had never seen this before and it was really fun! At first I thought they were on it for the show and that it wouldn't really work, but nothing could be further from the truth.
The next roller coaster was another small roller coaster, this time with spinning carts by SBF. The Megabross roller coaster with red track and blue supports. Yes, the colors are important to mention because this operator bought no less than 4 exactly the same rollercoasters, all of which have the name Megabross and the same theming. Luckily for us, the track color is different.
In Spain they like thrill rides where you have to stand up. This increases the sensation and tension! But there are also plenty of ordinary thrill rides and other attractions here.
In the meantime it was time to do the second spinning wild mouse. This time it was the Raton Vacilon Con Gato Comilon, a very long name formed by an equally high nameplate. This mouse also has a tunnel in the shape of a cat and contains special effects that can be controlled via the buttons in the cart.
But one of the roller coasters I was most looking forward to was the water coaster Selva Encatada, as far as I know the only traveling water coaster in the world! The layout is also unique and I don't think it is used on any other coaster. It was therefore very nice to be able to do this immediately at its first fair since 2019. Selva Encatada also had a button on the cart to activate an extra water effect and of course we must not forget the tunnel.
If you thought there was only 1 wild mouse with such a long name and gigantic nameplate, then you're wrong, because here in Spain there is a second one, the Super Raton El Mas Vacilon. This roller coaster also contained a tunnel but this time no special effects. It was equipped with a funhouse part, but unfortunately this was closed and we could not try this out.
Back time for a children's roller coaster, this time the second Dragon Coaster at this fair that simply had the name Dragon. As a highlight we got a balloon to take home!
And when we thought we had discovered all the roller coasters, it turned out that there was another children's roller coaster hidden at the very back. This would mean that we would do no less than 12 rollercoasters at this fair because we also had to do 2 others. This children's roller coaster had the name Miny Mouse and was fortunately also equipped with some larger seats.
Those who wanted to cool off in this warm weather could go to the Cataratas.
The penultimate roller coaster was the Carrusel Express. A live action rollercoaster in which all occupants receive a water pistol with which they can shoot at the employees who are also equipped with water pistols. To my surprise we were allowed to keep the water pistols and we also got red and green flags. Would they have known that we would go to Portugal later?
The 12th and last rollercoaster of the day is the special Ala Delta, an inverted coaster from Reverchon. Only two of this copy were made in the world. The other is Buwalda's Euro Coaster, which mainly travels at the German fairs but also occasionally comes to the Netherlands. At the bottom of the drop there were still beautiful fountains installed that went down just in time every time a cart arrived.
We had been in a great hurry, but in the meantime we had progressed for 4 and a half hours. So glad we got to this fair on time. We decided it was time to eat. After this we wanted to take a ride on the Ferris wheel. The Ferris wheel is not only very high and beautiful, it also turns very fast. It's like you're watching a fast-forward movie. An experience that we absolutely did not want to miss.
Meanwhile, the gigantic wide paths were completely filled with people and there were long lines at the attractions, which can be clearly seen in other photos.
In front of the booster there was a queue that I didn't even think about getting into, and the top spin spinning one ride after another with all the benches completely filled. Same busy scenario to just about all attractions.
Finally, we went to take a look at all the tents. A continuous row of marquees that we walked through for minutes to get to the end. And so there were no less than 4 rows of tents on both sides. Good for a total of more than 1000 marquees. By the time we got through this, 6 hours had passed since arriving at the fair. So we could have easily stayed much longer and done many more interesting attractions, but it was time to go to the hotel, because the next day was already a lot on the schedule.
In short, it was a more than successful evening and I definitely want to come back here. There was so much to see that actually 1 evening is not enough to get a complete picture of all the festivities. Seville's Feria de Abril is highly recommended for anyone who enjoys folk festivals and fairs.

Its a nice park with a beautiful, themed setting. But I think honestly they need to in my opinion build & introduce the local area, Kent and tourists & Theme Park Rollercoaster enthusiasts with new permanent rides, attractions and most importantly more coasters. Especially as the park has the land, aswell loads of potential for new attractions, coasters and rides. Would be a shame to see it go as its heritage, historical and a nice place to visit & spend the day. But honestly, think its time to bring modern day ride types into park. Maybe introduce via land expansion more lands and bigger, modern day coaster types. Think this is what it needs in my opinion, would like to see maybe a GCI Wooden Coaster interact with Scenic Railway? Or a Water Chute? But yeah, think this is what Dreamland Margate needs. But thanks for filming & sharing your experience. Look forward to seeing more videos related to this & theme parks in future. 😀👍

excellent video Shawn from Dreamland Margate for the first time in 3 years to check out everything this historic seaside amusement park has to offer as of summer 2022. In this vlog, I share on-ride POVs from the classic Scenic Railway, a wooden roller coaster that originally opened in 1920. Along with that, I check out the other changes at the park since my previous visit along with talking about the complicated history of the park. Let's hope that this classic amusement park continues to operate and the Scenic Railway lives on for future generations to enjoy!
I sometimes go past in it when I am in the works van, we deliver around Margat, work for a tuck by truck in Herne Bay Kent, and I know the area very well. I also have a book about Dreamland Margate history. big thumbs to you as well Shawn.

    Shawn,
]Margate reminds me the the parks we had in the fifties and sixties down the New Jersey Shore, Seaside, Asbury Park, Wildwood.
It really has a nostalgia/family feel to it.
They have to get those basic fun ones like the Ferris Wheel back in action and they
have to play on the past, like old time food entertainment rather than compete with those mega modern monsters.
Play to their strengths because I am sure there are a lot of people who would be comfortable there.
    What do you think?
    Cheers,
    Rik Spector

On one of your trips to Europe last year or the year before, you went on a coaster that you said more often than not it didn't make it back to the station under its own momentum. I was thinking about it & with the actual train being so long, by the time the back of it got to the tip of the lift hill the front would be already half way down the other side.

I have many happy childhood memories of this ride my dad told me when he was a lad in the 50s it was even bigger and longer that went over some of the buildings that are no longer there themselves but due to an accident that killed some people that was on the ride in the 50s they had to change the lay out I so pleased to see it running again after it was deliberately set on fire it is a land mark of margate I hope it is around for generations to come 102 years of giving joy, memories , thrills its a big part of uk history especially those who went on holiday day trip locals I am glad its grade 2 listed so it has some protection I will admit I was worried about it let's hope the park can do well

They really need to remove and sell that drop tower and just concentrate on the vintage rides. Make a deal with Carters to have all their rides on site as a perm home is the only way forward from what I can see.

It's great to see the park up and running again this year, particularly the Scenic Railway. However let's not kid ourselves. The park is nowhere near as good as it was just 5 years ago let alone how it was during its heyday in the 50s and 60s. The new owners have very much put the emphasis on the park being a live music venue now. There is also a huge amount of work to be done if the listed cinema building is ever to reopen. It's been derelict for years which is tragic because it's beautiful inside. I see a time in the not too distant future where the park consists of just 3 things. The Scenic, the cinema building and the live music stage, which to some degree is no bad thing as two out of those three are basically the core elements of Dreamland. I think the rest of the park will be developed into housing. I will get down there this year. As Shawn said, you need to take the opportunity while you can. You never know what's around the corner.

    Hi Shawn,
Is there a contact I can get you on to ask for some advice with regards to booking a family holiday to Porta Ventura. Tips on accommodation, tickets and flights etc. I have watched your videos for around 5 year following all the various trips and now the family are of an age where we can start the theme parks and more importantly I can make a return lol.
I look forward to your reply,
    Ryan and family
