Great information, thank you. I spent three weeks in HCM City. I am back in the states now, returned last week, but will go back to Vietnam. I will stay in Da Nang next. Sounds great.
This was a very informative video. Although I have no plans to move to Vietnam I lived in Japan for ten years and taught English before getting into LE in the U.S. A lot of what you guys discussed reminded me of my life in Japan. Nice work.
Regarding school, I went to K12 education in Vietnam (Dalat). Came to the US as a refugee and enrolled at a local community college. I found science and math level at the community college pretty easy since we already studied those in high school back in Vietnam. The only tough subject was inevitably English (reading, listening, writing at college level). After two years there, I transferred to a top university and graduated with a degree in computer science. I've added this comment just to show that public schools in Vietnam weren't that bad, especially, I grew up during the time that Vietnam was closed to the outside world (much like North Korea these days), and experiencing extreme poverty.
Really great perspective, thanks for sharing. I don't think public education is bad at all. Maybe a good high school is important. But glad to see you've been very successful.
Great interview boys, I just met John last week dropping off my order of his wife’s next level hummus. If you live in Da Nang and miss hummus in your life from back home, her’s is a must try!

Great video. Here in the US, ESOL teachers will typically have a state certification to teach in public schools or a masters in TESOL to teach in higher ed institutions. CELTA is also an option and is internationally recognized. Personally that’d be the route I’d take based on cost and time, if I was aiming to teach English abroad.
Nice video! I like these videos on other foreigners moving. TBH...only thing keeping me from moving their now full time is the hassle of moving with my dog and navigating that.
Reasons i left Vietnam Hoville were for 2 reasons one pollution ie noise and air in Saigon and secondly when my son needed to go into primary school at 6years of age..... the costs for an international skool was around 20 to 30 grand and that was 10 years ago and mostly not worth it unless you are really cashed up!
I believe on the whole Vietnamese education is good. I know for a fact that their universities are excellent and most of them are in the top tier for equivalencies (UK universities staff would know what that means).
awesome video Travis! I left the UK on the 8th of January 2025. Currently in Bali then I head to Vietnam on the 14th Feb. Going to be living in HCMC teaching English. A lot of what John said resonated, especially regarding office job life not being the one

Just wanted to correct on what travis said about income in the family. In Vietnam, in general both men and women work. It’s very much 2 person income household. Not the traditional husbands made the most money. However, even when the women go out to work, they still expected to cook and take care the kids so maybe that is why travis thinks women mostly just take care household work and don’t earn much money.
Hiya Travis I’m a subscriber to your channel, I’m in Hoi A right now but heading back to Da Nang tomorrow. As you have been in Da Nang for so long, can you give me a heads up as to what is the best hospital for foreigners there? I’ve got to get an MRI or a CT scan done on my head as I collapsed suddenly and I’ve been having dizzy spells and headaches since. Obviously I’m a little bit concerned… Would appreciate your input and take care 🙏
Hiya again Travis I forgot to introduce myself last week, my name is Stuart and I’m from England. My hospital visit was stressful for obvious reasons, but after a CT Scan, my results were positive, nothing serious other than Vertigo and high blood pressure, the staff were fine there, so all good and thanks for the advice… I’ve visited 3 travel agencies this morning regarding trying to get an extension to my my time here in Vietnam. I got a 45 day stamp on arrival at the airport in Hanoi, which expires on the 30th January. Do you know if I can go overland to a land border, maybe Laos, and do a border bounce to extend my stay? The travel agencies didn’t seem to know. I’m sorry to ask, but I’m a bit unsure of what to do… Thanks Travis. 👍
Not comparing lifestyle , Although Vietnam is slightly cheaper While making 2k in Vietnam if you have enough hours you could make 5k in China (Jobs are generally full time) Back in 2017-19 Vietnam salaries would be 22-25$ per hour And in China it was 3-3.5k per month (for natives) Salaries in Vietnam worsen while living expenses got higher In China living expenses went slightly down and salaries increased
Obviously, the expat came to teach English because they wanted the life style. There are a lot of other places that they can earn more, japan korea…so what’s your point?
@hp4415 the point was made but it clearly went over you head it's ok bud.. He literally said in the video that salaries in Korea are similar and he is right also Korea is very different and much more expensive china isn't and gives you a very similar lifestyle in many aspects
@ both china and Vietnam are communist but they aren’t as similar as you think. China is very strict and controlling. You can’t use google RUclipsr unless using VPN, still the government are tightly monitored everything, surveillance cameras are everywhere monitoring the citizens. That’s why many westerners move out of china to teach English in southeast Asia even though you earn more in china. Life in Vietnam is way more chill. Plus nice beaches. So the lifestyle in Vietnam is way more similar to Thailand Philippine Indonesia than china
@hp4415 thanks for lecturing me about two places I lived in and visit often Vietnam is more chill only when compared to China's largest cities not the many others Only da nang is that chill in Vietnam . Regarding the rest you're wrong never met a single foreigner who left because of some cameras on the street
@ chill as in not being monitors by the government. Just because you haven’t met anyone who left because of the cameras, doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. Cameras is just an example i gave. The whole point is being monitor by the governments ( through cameras or other means). You can just google, plenty of people share their stories online.
Yeah nah … all well and good to talk about the pros and cons but what do you do when you get bored of going to the beach and going to the mountains and sitting around drinking coffee all day? There’s more to life than leisure you have to have a purpose and you have to have an activity that is rewarding and not just financially. A noble cause. After all the niceties have passed this is what most people seek.
Fair points bro. I haven't got bored of the beach yet because I don't go very often. I work more hours than the average person just looks a little different than a 9-5
I don't know how it's in Da Nang but I've called the ministry of education in Saigon and they confirmed that as of 2024, NONE of the international schools have license to operate as such🤦 They are basically private businesses. His daughter is sooo gorgeous🥰
Hey Travis, Been enjoying your vlogs. Just a quick tip for you that'll endear you to all the Aunties in Vietnam. Unless they are actually family related Aunties, you should call the Aunties in the the street chị ínstead of cô. It makes them feel younger and will be flattered you think they look young. 😂
He seems like a top bloke. I might be leaving the UK for VN (second visit) very soon to look for a teaching job. Hard to decide whether to look for work in a nice place like Da Nang or just head to one of the bigger cities where work is a little easier to come by. I'm not the most confident person and my CV isn't too impressive, although I do have my degree and TEFL, both with all the correct stamps etc. Considering Hai Phong - looks interesting if a bit hectic.
Thank you both for the suggestion, I'll definitely bear it in mind. I visited Nha Trang briefly 13 years ago during Tet and liked it, very relaxed and easy-going. In the past I heard that the market there was oversaturated with teachers but perhaps it's a little less competitive now that everyone wants to be in Da Nang. Quy Nhon also looks nice.
I am interested in the dog situation. I would be bringing a a dog from the states who is actually originally from Thailand. He goes everywhere with me. I won’t be having children at my age so I am dedicating my life to this pup and would like to provide him the most beautiful 10 years ahead as possible. I wonder in a Danang will be as good for him as it is for Me.
Plenty of Vietnamese and foreigners have Dogs in DN. As I mentioned in the video, not tons of open space parks. There are a few, you just will have to drive 10 minutes. Beach is possible but you should go to the edges of the beach where there are not many tourists.
I'm non native from Russia. My English is avarage and despite this I have about 110-120 hours per month. Life here is cheap. Yiu just need to take tefl certificate (takes 3 weeks to pass). And ef set instantly. Most work places are in Hanoi and ho chi minh city. Rate is from 18 usd . It means per month is from 2000 usd.
@chrismichaels6928 yes I used to work like this 2 years. If you work officially with working permit you have more working hours. If you don't have bachelor's degree you can work part time in punlic schools it's about 15 hours per week . Or full time in kindergartens from 80 to 100 hours per month in kindergarten. You don't need degree in kindergarten in training centers and for part time job and covers in public schools. But you will need to visarun every 45 days or 90 days to the boarder and back if you don't have working permit and temporary residential state
