That's all cool, but can I use this software (I've already DLed and installed it) to see the sky relative to my position and current time of day/night on Earth? I was hoping I could use it to identify celestial bodies and such in the actual night sky.
up north, down south.. even if there's no direction in space we still consider above us = up.. however if two people would meet in space, with eachoters feet against heads (uhm, do you get me? :P) then up would be both up and down for them.. so you have to consider north = up above your point of view in the program
This video game ne an idea! they should update it the night of a lunar or solar eclipse to show the eclipse too!! they could do it for things like comets and other important things too, if its possible. that would be awesome!
And to think they have much more to give! GJ google, next is apparently putting all picture resources to produce a live 3d experience, even in the past.. I.E. be in Rome 20 years ago, in a 3d world, with everything like it was...
There's a program like this already out, but better and cooler. It's called "Celestia." Google Earth only shows u what the sky looks like from earth when you look up. You can't fly or move around in 3D, ur just lookin up at the sky. In Celestia, you can actually travel all around the galaxy and visit other stars, extrasolar planets, black holes etc. in full 3D, kinda like flying a space ship. Its only like 14 megs too, do a google search and try it out.

Read Bill Bryson's book "A SHORT HISTORY OF NEARLY EVERYTHING" and Peter Ward's book, "Rare Earth: Why Complex Life Is Uncommon in the Universe" If you really want to understand how lucky you are to be alive. BILL BRYSON's book is one you can't put down.
Sadly, I cannot give an honest opinion of this because my summer job consists of working with the $300 version of Starry Night (the most complex and in-depth commercial planetarium software currently available) and this seems (please don't hate me for this) like child's play to me. HOWEVER! It certainly is better than other free planetarium programs I have used and is most definitely a great start for Google. I hope they keep up the excellent work and even take a few cues from Starry Night.
in my 106 years on this earth i ain't seen anyt'ng like it; when i studied astrophysics, 87 years ago, the "visible sky" was limited to 6500 stars. we had no idea... now's the time to show the real thing... i wish google earth 2 showed real pictures of the telescope-visible night sky and not just drawings with some hubble images mixed in
we have this weekend change internet providers and seem to have lost google earth in the change over so i hope i am doing the right thing by trying to set it up again
