The iPhone 12 released to much fanfare with a new form factor in the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Along with a new squared-edge design, one of the headlining features was the return of Apple’s famous MagSafe brand; however, rather than being the MacBook-friendly charge port that would prevent your computer from falling off of a countertop, this new iPhone MagSafe design permits the usage of handy magnetic accessories like the iPhone MagSafe charger and MagSafe cases, MagSafe car mounts, and other MagSafe accessories. But there’s a problem with MagSafe. It’s just... well... it’s limited by physics. How has Apple tried to combat some of these hurdles and how has their selection in magnet chemistry, placement, surface area, and depth affected how strong these magnets attach? Let’s find out today as we learn about magnets, shear force, pull force, plating, and what that means for the best iPhone MagSafe accessories!

Wireless charging is less efficient then wired charging. So a power pack would result is lost energy that could be used. There is no better, more reliable method of electrical connection then a physical one. Wireless charging consumes 47% more power then a wire, not to mention the cost. Also a port allows you to back up your phone even if the screen is not functional.

Then they should not try to invent a problem, just use plain old wired charging, wireless charging is highly inefficient on top of that, so if apple was really worried about env. then a simple move of integrating USBC would solve all problems it would cause less ewaste, it would use more efficient way of charging it, it would not slip way when it is being charged, etc.

Two important uses (besides charging) for the Lightning connection are Apple Car Play (This only works via a wired USB-C to lightning connection in my brand new VW T6.1 for instance and will not work over bluetooth) and data connections that take audio or video over USB (eg I use a USB to Optical Out S/PDIF via the lightning to USB camera adapter with my iPhone). Can we just talk about how monumentally dumb the EU forcing all companies to use the same charger is? I mean first of all, there are bound to be countless Apple users who do have lightning cables but don’t have usb c cables, and would need to buy new cords in this legislation aimed at preventing people from having to buy new cords. Oh the irony. Second, imagine if the EU had decided to enact this legislation ~5 years ago. We’d be stuck with micro-usb phones. Who’s to say that in 5-10 years when the next usb does to usb-c what usb-c did to micro-usb that the EU will accept/recognize any potential improvements and let it happen. I have no trust in politicians being able to understand and act on engineering decisions. Not for nothing either because in Australia you can’t change your rims on your car because of some backwards legislation written no doubt by some politician that had zero understanding of why such a law is ridicules.

I don’t know what Apple was thinking when they made the wallet attachment. It will always fall out if you put it in your pocket.

Well they only thought about how much they can charge the wallet for

Lg put used to put 4 ferromagnetic pucks around the qi receiver. They didn't advertise this and never made a magnetic dock but some developers found them and i think it was a kickstarter but a 3rd parry car holder with a combo of aligning magnets and micro suction silicone held the phone on the dock. The silicone kept it from sliding and the magnets aligned it and helped prevent the adhesion from creeping away.

@Joseph Dematas False, you can use as many watts as you want provided the voltage is 5V or whichever voltage the battery or device is rated for. The device will only pull as many amps as it’s designed for.

@@draconis3186 that’s not true. My iPhone 7 Plus was “designed” to only be charged on the shitty little 5W brick. I charge my 7 Plus on my wife’s 20W brick she got for her iPhone 12 and it charges 3 times faster. If what you said was true, the charging speed wouldn’t increase on a 20W adapter.

I love the magsafe charger, have been using since I got my 12 pro max (1 week ago). It took 12 minutes to charge my phone from 10% to 60% which is faster than any wireless charger at the same price. I haven't even charged my 12 pro max once using the lighting cable.

it is better for gaming while charging you can change the orientation of the cable. Not to mention a future car mount. The previous versions of magnetic car mounts didn't prevent phone from shifting its orientation. This new mag safe design is capable of doing what I need it to so it can hold a heavy iPhone 12 Max pro in landscape. It is that extra magnet that isn't the circle that will help stabilize it.
