    Your automation for your garage door should use your location and a radius around your house instead of a timer. If you end up in traffic or delayed from an accident and forget (since you said your memory is bad) then your garage will be free for the picking. You could still use an automation to enable the garage door to open on entering the radius.

    • @eugsmiley
      @eugsmiley 10 месяцев назад +1

      The timer is one minute. This likely means he's in his neighborhood.

    • @fjrichman
      @fjrichman 10 месяцев назад

      It does use his location it looks like. Then when based on his drive home and his location he's a minute from home his garage door will open.

      personally id use a nfc as your down the street tap the nfc and bam door goes up.... a little backwards cause youd have to use energy but safest way to do it if there are delays getting home

    • @brainz-brainz
      @brainz-brainz 10 месяцев назад +7

      Or just press the garage door button in your car... Personally I will never automate a lock or a door. Too much potential for false opens.

    • @fjrichman
      @fjrichman 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@brainz-brainz Definitely agree with this, unless I can have 100% guarantee it wouldn't open unless I'm there it isn't worth i

    I use the "Tesla Custom Integration" through HACS to automatically turn on my home's AC when the car's destination is set to Home. It also exposes a ton of other information about the car, so it would be possible to do things like check your calendar and send you a notification to plug in the car if it doesn't have enough range to make it to your destination and back or send you a notification if any of your tires are low.

    • @SmartHomeSolver
      @SmartHomeSolver  10 месяцев назад +2

      Oh that's good! I have the Tesla Custom Integration through HACS installed but I don't see the destination. Would you mind sharing what entity that is?
      Also I just realized that integration has time of arrival so I might change my automation to use that since it will update based on traffic. I'll just open the garage when it's one minute before arrival time.

    • @scottmartin6411
      @scottmartin6411 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@SmartHomeSolver The entity is device_tracker._destination_location_tracker. The states aren't super descriptive. I've seen "Unknown", "Home", and "Away". I think it goes off of the home destination configured in the car itself, so it's possible that there's a "Work" state as well, but my wife works from home and doesn't have that configured.

    I'm the process of building my own smart home and love your videos! One thing that really intrigued me in this video, was your ability to automate the Apple TV to search and play a specific show. I'm looking to do something like this for my grandparents, but with FuboTV, as they have a tough time navigating through the UI's and such. Can you please give me some more insight on how you automated this? Thanks!

    Ive setup switchbot lock to unlock my front door when we come home, it tracks all members of the house, so it will unlock the door for each person, even if someone is home.. for easy access. however switchbot dont allow auto unlock.. but Home assistant does! it uses location, wifi connection and camera so if one is not working it has a backup. so its working 100% of the time ! its great

  • @Gk2003m
    @Gk2003m 6 месяцев назад

    2:30: On the front door lock, perhaps this idea will help. A contact sensor tells you whether the door is open or closed. If door was open and is now closed, lock the lock. If door is open, lock remains unlocked If door unlocked but closed for 3 minutes, lock the lock. That way it’s locked whenever it’s closed, and unlocked whenever it’s open.

    I have a question about the "genius garage".
    What if you press go home and there is a lot more traffic than anticipated or something happened on the way and you forget that the garage door is open. What then?
    Did you find a solution for that?
    My uncle has an app on his tesla model X that communicates with the garage door and it sends a signal when he is in the street to open the garage door.

    • @SmartHomeSolver
      @SmartHomeSolver  10 месяцев назад +2

      That's a great question and the way I have it set up it's really easy to fix the traffic problem. The automation starts up a timer in Home Assistant www.home-assistant.io/integrations/timer/ and it counts down to when the door should open. I could add a an actionable notification to cancel the timer or even add more time to the timer. Setting the timer is a little tricky though because HA doesn't allow me to just start a timer with a certain amount of time. So I found a really cool work around I'll go over in the second channel video soon!
      Your uncle probably has HomeLink or maybe the MyQ integration. Those are both good options but cost money so I was trying to find an inexpensive way to do it.

    I have found the best way to automate the garage door to open is using a esp32 device that has wifi. When it connects to Home Assistant through wifi (and for me, the alarm is armed) then it opens the garage door and turns off the alarm. Wifi is great because it has a bit of an extended range and always opens before I get there. With the added advantage of guaranteeing that the car is almost home.

  • @BrianRoy86
    @BrianRoy86 10 месяцев назад +1

    Use the icloud3 integration from hacs. It has the travel time built into it so you can just open your doors if the time goes from greater than 1 minute to less than 1 minute. That way it doesn’t open your garage if you go somewhere that’s not home.

    • @fjrichman
      @fjrichman 10 месяцев назад

      It looks like it's a plug and play version of yellow, instead of buying yellow and then needing additional stuff (Computer Module, SSD, etc) with green you can just plug it in and it will start working. The only other big difference appears to be that Yellow comes with native Zigbee/Matter support while Green requires a separate dongle (which they do sell).
      So green is more aimed at people who want a device they can just plug in and it'll start working while yellow is aimed at the same sort of people who would run the system on a raspberry pi and want hardware with better support for Home Assistant's features.

    During the 'Counterstrike' portion of the the video you are using an Aeotec sensor but you list an Aqara sensor in your description. I purchased the Aqara sensor from the link, set it up with HA, but it results with a 1.5 second delay to turn on the lights after I hit the counter to trigger the sensor. Tried may settings but cannot get faster response times. Which sensor did you use in your video to get the counter light to brighten immediately after you tapped the counter? How did you get fast response times?

    • @SmartHomeSolver
      @SmartHomeSolver  10 месяцев назад +1

      Sorry I linked to the Aqara vibration sensor. I've updated the description. I'm using the Aeotec one since I had an extra laying around. I would say it's response time is faster than the Aqara but the Aqara is less expensive and probably has better battery life. Those Aeotec multipurpose sensors can eat through batteries so fast.

    i actually use a bluetooth connection as a trigger as well. i installed a little bluetooth receiver in my '04 bmw 325ci, and whenever i start the car it connects to my phone. my phone detects the connection and starts playing my music. i may try and make it so it will also turn off all my bedroom lights and stuff in the event i somehow forget to.

    I tried to post this earlier but don't see my comment. Maybe because it had an Amazon link?
    Anywho, I see you have a ball hanging from the ceiling for parking assist. I recently installed a ceiling mounted motion activated laser for parking assistance. Works great!
    I've been thinking about installing a smart outlet for it to keep it from coming on when there's motion in the garage but no car parking.

      Yeah RUclips might remove/hide comments if there are Amazon links. Sorry about that.
      I've been wanting to add one of those to my garage! I didn't think about how someone standing under it could trigger it.
      What did you end up using for laser motion sensor?

      @@SmartHomeSolver RUclips really must not like Amazon. I tried to just post the name of the item and it blocked me again! I must have made someone mad.

      There's several brands on Amazon, all selling the same cheap unit. Works great so far though!

      Also, I bought the single laser version but most it the units available are double for 2car garages.

      Oh that's really cool! I can see what you are talking about with the built in motion sensor and the laser if there isn't a car. I think I will add the same thing and make the smart outlet only turn on if the garage door is opening. Thanks for the help!

    • @samuelhardin8726
      @samuelhardin8726 10 месяцев назад

      @@SmartHomeSolver that would work as long as you're opening your garage before you park. A lot of times when our car is parking, the garage door was already open. So in that case the laser wouldn't activate.
      I have a YoLink outdoor motion sensor installed at the end of my driveway to detect vehicles arriving at our house. I plan to use that as the trigger for activating the smart outlet.

    All these "conveniently unlock/open" automations don't sit right with me. I won't even turn off my security system based on my location because if for some reason someone has my phone then they could have an easier time getting into my house even if they can't get into my phone. The only way I could imagine having an automatic unlock/open automation is if I could somehow 100% of the time guarantee it was me.
    Are the chances that someone will have my phone and know where I live slim? Yeah they are. But still not willing to risk it.

    I am curious reed. You are using so many apps in your videos. I mean just name them: home assistant, apple home, and so on. Are they just for exploration and content creation or do you really have to use so many apps? I mean maybe you need some features only available on one app but not another. So you have to use them in combo?

    • @SmartHomeSolver
      @SmartHomeSolver  10 месяцев назад

      Yes I try and use a variety for exploration and content creation. I am starting to remove systems to just make my life less hectic though. More on that soon!

    Is your garage AC dual hose and mounted through the wall or a window. I could not get a dual hose Midea PAC to work through a wall vent. Had to go with a single hose LG unit. I'm also in AZ.

      It's a dual hose and I have a small window in the garage that will fit the dual hose window cover thing. I've been pulling air from the inside because it's been so hot outside. Your in AZ so you know! But now that it's cooling down I might pull from the outside.
