A world renowned truly remarkable singer. Dame Kiri Te Kanawa has certainly earned a name amongst the very best in Opera worldwide. Loved this song, extremely powerful and full of love.❤
I don't understand how people can compare Dame Kiri with anybody who is existing. She is the ultimate and with fad and vogue coming here and there, still Kiri Te Kenawa will be like a firmament in heaven, unchanged and brilliantly sparkling.
dame kiri , her life was and is worth living. some one with a voice like that , and share it with many people is worth living. the joy she brings to the people, i thank you dame kiri te kanawa
People comparing a world class opera singer at the top of their game to Susan Boyle must be out of their mind. There are several thousand levels of class between them.
gillyuk1-13: The Dame didn't do this justice at all, your incensed response notwithstanding. It showed up her weaknesses. Opera is her genre - not musicals, not pop, not rock, not country, etc etc.
@Kay Young Susan Boyle has never performed in a staged musical. And she's extremely overrated and can't compare t9 anyone who actually plays Fantine onstage. The gold standard for this piece would be Ruthie Henshall or Patti LuPone (original singer).
It took a while to find out who Susan Boyle is. I watched her video. To anyone who knows about singing, Kiri is simply superior. What Susan Boyle did is that she inspires nd makes all of us believe we or some of us, the ordinary folks, would one day shine like a brilliant star. A beatiful story we all want to believe in. The reality is that few of us would be able to sing like Kiri. Susan Boyle is not a better singer. She is a dream we see it possible for us too.
Soprano operatic Dame Te Kanawa profoundly rocks this well known ballad from "Les Miserables". Lovely and sublime. I also admire the versions by Neil Diamond and Susan Boyle.
Good Lord. This lady is Kiri Te Kanawa. She is from New Zealand and sang at the wedding of the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer. You should try to listen to some recordings of her sing when she was younger. Mind blowing:)
Being serious. With singing, it is whether we enjoy something or not. It is not technical ability which does that for a lot of people. I am a great Kiri fan, and from Kiri's country also. Kiri can sing nearly everything. We all know that. As far as this song is concerned, I really enjoyed Susan's version. She did a great job, and it does show that the public is not entirely stupid. Some singers I just don't like. Susan has definitely got something, and the public knows it too.
Re all the comments below: I did think the tempo was a bit fast and the orchestra kind of loud...BUT the emotion and beauty of Te Kanawa's voice carried it off. Nothing like hearing a singer with a great voice stand there and deliver. She's one of the opera singers who can do well with pop...though I love her opera recordings best. She had everything.
Susan moves us because she's actually "I dreamed a dream" where as Kiri is "I used to dream but now I've got it all," and it's like before and after if you know what I mean.
Wow! I was really impressed. Kiri Te Kanawa was fantastic! Crossovers from opera to musical are so often disastrous! She probably trained so that she could synchronise her chest and vocal muscles differently so as to achieve the musical effect. From other attempts to cross over that I've heard, I think it's a very hard thing to achieve.
+Debbie Biscoe While I would say her performance was very good, the operatic voice doesn't really lend itself well to parts of this song. The operatic vibrato is just a little too heavy-handed to use in this song throughout. Unfortunately, opera singers are trained strictly for operatic vibrato. When a section of a song needs a more pop-sensible vibrato or a breathy vocal, many opera singers find it difficult to work that style. Kristin Chenoweth is quite good at moving between pop and operatic styles seamlessly. Unfortunately, most trained opera singers can't do this. In that sense, I'd say that this rendition was only a mild success as a crossover. Most pop audiences would still find this too operatic.
She makes it sound as if that magnificent voice just spins itself out of her throat, sweetly, easily, naturally. It takes great training to erase the rigors of training and sound "simply" beautiful.
Thanks for taking the time to watch Vivo Per Lei, love the song and will watch accompanied by Heather , have watched Sarah's which is great. Not trying to push Hayley down your throat but the other clip I like on youtube is her singing with Chin in Taiwan. She sings in the local language to 40000 people and the next day her concert sold out. It is not a classical piece. Well off to listen to Heather. Cheers
Awesome!! Very old school musical theatre, and will never go out of style, esp. with talent like this to remind us of the not very distant past. I will repeat my comments from other sites. Susan is an apple, this wonderful lady is an orange, what is the point of comparison, they are nothing alike!! hateful comments only hurt and only show the hateful mind behind the comment!! Grow up people!!
Magnifica KIRI TE KANAWA, que agradecido estoy a las nuevas tecnologias, gracias a ellas difrutamos de esta gran ARTISTA Sobre todo gracias a KIRI TE KANAWA Que tanto placer no regala.
Well thanks for the rap Im glad you liked that version of The Prayer its one of my favourites, I actually watched the concert in Tuscany and it was wonderful.......I have watched a few of Hayleys performances and she has a sweet voice but like you say choice makes the world great, or variety is the spice of life.........uplifting music makes the world a brighter place....cheers!
Kiri is a fabulous opera singer. Singing 'popular musical' songs requires a totally different technique. She did not make a bad effort at this at all and it was entertaining. Had they asked her to sing it as they would in opera, you would have got a totally different performance!
Pointless to compare her with Susan Boyle. READ AND LEARN , they are two totally different types of singers. MS te Kanawa's performance is that of a trained classical singer, while Ms Boyle is that of a gifted Popular singer. I think that to appreciate any classical singer's tone , range and voice, you would have to experience it live. Ms Boyle first performance was such a surprise, it became a revelation. No one expected it and it became more than it actually probably was- All luck and credit to her, because it was excellent. her subsequent performnces of this and other songs-after her success- reveal a certain mannered and self conscious air. But having said all of this, Why not just enjoy the performances and don't bother to compare- it really is not necessary.
I love to compare someone who has, for example, run down Hayley Westenra (who herself has probably sung more beautiful melodies than Dame Kiri ever has (with all her boring opera recitative)) with other singers, since many of them do a better job or sing more beautiful songs.
Agreed. I think you could say that Montserrat Caballe can sing other genres. Of all the opera singers, only Mario Lanza and Montserrat Caballe has been a big pop sensation with Barcelona, theme song for the Summer Olympics. The biggest of course was Caruso. He sang "Johnny Get Your Gun", which was the theme song for WW1.
Beautiful woman with a remarkable voice! Ms Te Kanawa has a heavenly presence and her technique is brilliant!!! Ms Boyle’s version is beautiful. She presented with her natural ability and without much training, which is commendable. However, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa brought to this performance a life of devotion to classical singing, including extensive training and education in multiple disciplines. She has an impressive repertoire and years of experience. She incorporated all of that into her delivery and did so with a touch of her individuality and remarkable musicality. The 2 artists are like comparing apples and oranges. The only thing in common is that they both sang the same song!
Now that you mention it, I was wondering why I felt so conflicted. I went back and watched Susan Boyle's BGT audition and indeed the score was much darker, reflecting those emotions. Good catch. :)
Shanni. You may be right. I have always liked Kiri. Most people would agree with you, as many commentators are already saying Susan is the greatest singer ever. If this is the case, we are truly privileged to be living in the Boyle era.
It is so easy to understand the fact that in this case we have the same song but diferent singers:Dame Kanawa is a lyric soprano and did the rendition with all the classical and vocal training she has to do.Mrs, Susan Boyle must be considered as a pop singer with a powerfull voice , and in her rendition she uses the best tecnic for pop rendition. So all we have to do is to accept that they are in diferent fields.
Yes, it is a bit fast, --- but what emotion one finds in Kiri's version.! No cheap gimmicks. Hasn't anyone noticed that the tears start around 150 and she is weeping at the end ?? Of course, being utterly professional "the show goes on" but anyone who knows her can see her pain and knows that SHE knows what the song is about.
When she won the Mobil Song Contest in New Zealand she had a voice to die for, the best in the world. I would love to see that recording of her again and even ones of her and Sister Mary Leo who helped train Kiri..
Andrea & Heather - 'The Prayer' WOW now on my favorites . Couldnt believe the lack of comments regarding their Vivo Per Lei performance. I didnt like it but choice makes the world great. The Prayer WOW. Will listen to more of her clips, thanks My immediate interest in Hayley Westenra although always admired her is on 22nd January going to her only NZ summer concert at Black Barn Vineyard Hawkes Bay. Her back up is violinist Fiona Pears. Cant wait and need the break from work. Cheers
@stradevarious It does not matter. You are right. Kiri is not well known in the America or Europe. However, she is well known and admired in places like Brazil, Japan, Spain, Canada, Hungary, Sweden, Russia and Australia. They love her in these countries. She doesn't need to worry about the Europe and America.
No doubt if we were going to put one version of this song, and one version only, in a time capsule, it would not be this one. But she has as much right to sing it, her way, as anyone else, and anyone else means everyone else. And opera buffs have a right to hear it sung in an operatic venue. For me the one that would go in the time capsule is Patti LuPone's, for someone else perhaps Aretha Franklin or Susan Boyle, but everyone is free to sing it for their own public
Thanks for the great chat. I'll post regarding Hayleys concert i'm going to this month on this site, you may or may not be interested but I will. Also looking forward to hearing Fiona Pears she seems a good performer. Hope Hayley sings my favourites from her collection Hine E Hine, May it Be, Laschia Chlo Pianga and Scarborough Fair. Sorry to hijack a Kiri thread but it has helped me forgive her for her slagging. Communication does work Cheers
Not disagreeing with you Swann just saying that Boyles claim to fame was mainly due to the hype that surrounded her first audition. There are many singers British or otherwise that can sing like Boyle, dime a dozen but there arent many in Kiri's league and we should not even be speaking about them in the same sentence. Ive always been a great fan of Kiri's and she has had to overcome her share of trials in operatic circles but she is where she is because of that God-given voice and hard work.
Such debate regarding whether she or Boyle sing it better; neither sing it half as good as Ruthie Henshall. I can hear the pain and suffering in her version as if she had truly lived what she is singing, that is not present in Boyle's version nor Dame Kanawa's version. Les Miserables -10th anniversary - I Dreamed a Dream LONDON cast
When songs from movies or plays are sung in concert or on recordings, they lose the essence of the song. The meaning is mostly lost because the circumstances are missing. My favorite is the scene in Knickerbocker Holiday when Judy Holiday is listening to Walter Huston singing September Song on a Grammaphone. The expression on Holiday's face and her body language changes as she listens and the non-verbal communication between her and Joseph Cotton is remarkable.
please do not compare the goddess of sopranos, kiri te kanawa, with susan boyle. i don't understand why we always need to compare~ just enjoy each musician and each performance separately for its own merit.
gordonc. I agree that Kiri should not have criticized Hayley or anyone else. The best way would have been to criticize the media and marketing outlets that hype up people as great singers etc. when they are not technically up to it. It is the fault of these outlets, not the singers themselves, who are not making these claims. Kiri could have made a general statement, which she has already done about shows like Britains Got Talent demeaning the art. Most would agree with that.
Kiri's voice is stunning and beautiful. But Kiri is stunning and beautiful. What was stunning about Susan Boyle's initial performance was that Susan did not either but, in the course of a single performance *made real and instant* what the words of the song were just singing about. Kiri will always be a greater singer in any technical sense, but now, after a number of years in which it could have become merely a cliche, Susan Boyle's performance transcended even art and was reality.
Thanks for your reply Swanningaround. Firstly I am not an enemy of Kiris, my comments are simple, she should apologies to Hayley Westenra for slagging her ( which she won't) and leave songs like I Dream a Dream to singers who can actually sing the song like Hayley. Pretty simple
This song shows the 'limitations' of many opera-trained singers, when they turn their hand to musical numbers. Whilst Te Kanawa certainly manages the song easily from a technical point of view her lack of acting ability makes it tedious. Don't get me wrong, Boyle can't act either, but someone like Ruthie Henshall (her version is on here) has the right balance between an excellent, if not operatic voice, and fine acting ability, which Boyle and many opera stars, do not have.
If only Kiri had used your words to Hayley in 2008 the world would be a better place. You mention that you are not a huge fan of either artist which is fair however my favourite clip on youtube is Hayley and Andrea Bocelli singing Vivo Per Lei. Let me know what you think if you get a chance to watch. Over 6 million viewers have. Have a great 2010
dunno what ms kiri said but what she didn"t say was, "good for susan boyle! what an inspiration to so many people! i wish her the best!" now THAT would have shown some class.
Not an easy song to sing...it is part of an emotional story ....les mis must be watched from curtain to curtain...kiri was not into it that night but she is still great
hmmm, you are very right. You have no idea the frustration I get from Jenkins and Potts, as an avid opera fan, and bass-baritone myself. I would say Kiri's jazz is actually fairly good, even though musical theatre does not do her justice. her opera is the best of it's class, truly.
gharusa. Thank you for your comment. I agree with you. Kiri started off as a pop singer and moved into opera. She also sang this long before Susan Boyle became famous. I do like Susan's version too, but they are quite different styles. Both performances are enjoyable.
I absolutely cannot get enough of Dame Kiri. She is magnificent.
Many things make me proud to be a New Zealander and our wonderful Dame Kiri is one of them!
This shows Dame Kiri's versatility. She is simply brilliant.
A world renowned truly remarkable singer. Dame Kiri Te Kanawa has certainly earned a name amongst the very best in Opera worldwide. Loved this song, extremely powerful and full of love.❤
She was the one that started my love for opera. She is the best
This is one of the greatests sopranos of the history of opera. A timeless diva. Used to sing with Pavarotti and Domingo. =)
AND CARRERAS!
I don't understand how people can compare Dame Kiri with anybody who is existing.
She is the ultimate and with fad and vogue coming here and there, still Kiri Te Kenawa will be like a firmament in heaven, unchanged and brilliantly sparkling.
Thanks again: Kiri is always a treat.
dame kiri , her life was and is worth living. some one with a voice like that , and share it with many people is worth living. the joy she brings to the people, i thank you dame kiri te kanawa
Une voix, une présence, un charisme qui m'enchante. Écouter et voir cette immense artiste est toujours un bonheur. Merci Madame.

How can one compare a Diva to a fat cow ?
@@bassoassoluto: why am I bothring to respond to an ignorant jerk?

Kay Young Susan Boyle signs it much better she has a better voice Kiri has a voice which is squeaky
The more I listen to her, the more I enjoy her. She sounds so refreshing singing this piece. Pretty!
She is one of my very favorite singer, her voice is uniquely beautiful!

It's quite sublime. Some people have no understanding of this woman's talents.
You were right to post. I wanted to expand on your post because I also didn't want listeners to get the wrong impression of her singing:)
Good Lord. This lady is Kiri Te Kanawa. She is from New Zealand and sang at the wedding of the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer. You should try to listen to some recordings of her sing when she was younger. Mind blowing:)
Breath control! Beautiful! That last note could go on forever. That is operatic training.

Great singing from Kiri but the orchestra did her no favours - too fast and march-like
Kiri por siempre Kiri, IMPECABLE, BELLA, BRAVA!!!
I really like this version - it shows us another facet of the character.

No one ever did it better. No one ever did anything she sings better. She could sing the phone-book and the universe would be entranced.

The way that she ended it was heavenly :)
I totally agree. Susan Boyle sang with much more emotion, and this song works better with her Alto/Mezzo range.
I absolutely love this! Really glad to see less of the Susan Boyle comments here too!

Thank You from my heart.
I like this pop/ operatic version by the lovely Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. I also like Neil Diamond and Susan Boyle versions.
Absolutely beautiful.

Not an easy song to sing...it is part of an emotional story ....les mis must be watched from curtain to curtain...kiri was not into it that night but she is still great
Actually I do enjoy O Mio Babbino by Hayley....she sings that quite well......thanks again!
hmmm, you are very right. You have no idea the frustration I get from Jenkins and Potts, as an avid opera fan, and bass-baritone myself. I would say Kiri's jazz is actually fairly good, even though musical theatre does not do her justice. her opera is the best of it's class, truly.
BRAVO!!
gharusa. Thank you for your comment. I agree with you. Kiri started off as a pop singer and moved into opera. She also sang this long before Susan Boyle became famous. I do like Susan's version too, but they are quite different styles. Both performances are enjoyable.
lovely, just lovely
Great ! ...
