Apparently, when 'Madge' (Emily Perry) retired from performing in her 90s she moved into an elderly care home in South London which was rather substandard. Upon hearing of this, Barry Humphries took it upon himself to locate much better lodgings - ultimately finding her a place at Brinsworth House, Twickenham (a residential and nursing retirement home for former theatre and entertainment professionals). She passed away in 2008, at age 100.

Dame Edna Everage was the genius of 'her agent' Barry Humphries. A very talented man in his own right. 🙂 Such was the strength of Dame Edna's character, it was actually easy to forget that it was Barry Humphries under the costume and makeup. The performance with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa was something special and Dame Kiri showed a wonderful sense of humour herself. A remarkable, talented and world renowned star herself.
I love the sly wicked humour of our Edna. On a Parkinson show she leaned over to Helen Mirren and asked her if she had got her Dame hood for finally making a film where she kept her clothes on. The Dame looked most offended which made it all the funnier.
No one has come close to making me laugh so hard and so much as Dame Edna (Barry); his lightning fast whit, intelligence, magical way of telling a story, ability to induce hysterical laughter without even saying a word and of course, his ability to insult anyone but never leaving anyone feel insulted. Barry/Edna, you’ve reduced me to hysterics more times than I can remember and as far back as far as I can remember; thank you so much you are and will be greatly missed, the world will never be quite as funny
Dame Edna has the unique ability to control the situation and the way she(he) made Parky who is composed lose his composure with the face touching remarks is very clever. Such a quick witted talented person and people dont really appreciate how good it is

The woman who played her did such a good job. :) It's sad to think that she died.
That was one of the points that Barry was making, that the women he'd seen were two faced and quite nasty, really. But he was just brilliant at it. Sharp as a razor. He'd take you down, any time he wanted to. I missed my opportunity to see him on his farewell tour, and I'll always regret it. But like I said on another post, when I watched his show on the internet, Les Patterson nearly killed me with laughter, so maybe I had a lucky escape :D
Dame Edna's life-long friend and bridesmaid Madge Allsop (born Marjorie Kiri McWhirter), had a _tragic_ honeymoon in her native New Zealand. Madge invited Edna to accompany her and husband Douglas Allsop on the honeymoon. At Rotorua, Madge and Edna witnessed Douglas accidentally drown in a boiling volcanic mud pond. Is that why Madge was mute? Actress Emily Perry retired from the role of Madge aged 97 in 2003. Thank you Emily :-) RIP.
