Apparently, when 'Madge' (Emily Perry) retired from performing in her 90s she moved into an elderly care home in South London which was rather substandard. Upon hearing of this, Barry Humphries took it upon himself to locate much better lodgings - ultimately finding her a place at Brinsworth House, Twickenham (a residential and nursing retirement home for former theatre and entertainment professionals). She passed away in 2008, at age 100.

A very talented man in his own right. 🙂 Such was the strength of Dame Edna's character, it was actually easy to forget that it was Barry Humphries under the costume and makeup. Dame Edna's life-long friend and bridesmaid Madge Allsop (born Marjorie Kiri McWhirter), had a _tragic_ honeymoon in her native New Zealand. Madge invited Edna to accompany her and husband Douglas Allsop on the honeymoon. At Rotorua, Madge and Edna witnessed Douglas accidentally drown in a boiling volcanic mud pond. Is that why Madge was mute? Actress Emily Perry retired from the role of Madge aged 97 in 2003. Thank you Emily :-) RIP.

The lady that played Madge Allsopp was 90 years old there! You would never of thought it. She passed away in 2008 just after celebrating her 100th Birthday.
