Upon hearing of this, Barry Humphries took it upon himself to locate much better lodgings - ultimately finding her a place at Brinsworth House, Twickenham (a residential and nursing retirement home for former theatre and entertainment professionals). She passed away in 2008, at age 100.

A very talented man in his own right. 🙂 Such was the strength of Dame Edna's character, it was actually easy to forget that it was Barry Humphries under the costume and makeup. The performance with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa was something special and Dame Kiri showed a wonderful sense of humour herself. A remarkable, talented and world renowned star herself.
I love the sly wicked humour of our Edna. On a Parkinson show she leaned over to Helen Mirren and asked her if she had got her Dame hood for finally making a film where she kept her clothes on. The Dame looked most offended which made it all the funnier.

A sad, sad, sad, day when i heard of Barrys/Dame Edna & Les Pattern pasing. Saw him live in Sydney some years ago in his Farwell Tour & tickets were $545 each & was worth every cent. My heart feels empty. R.I.P. Barry & thank you for making this world a better place.

How about comedians cracking these people up with the funny things that happen in life. I think that would last longer and have a more long term effect on these patients. That woman was brilliant at playing such a role. I loved how Edna would pretend to be so caring and nice, but horribly abuse the woman hahaha Edna would make sure that she was wearing her best clothes, and make sure that Madge was in a potato sack. The woman who played her did such a good job. :) It's sad to think that she died.
That was one of the points that Barry was making, that the women he'd seen were two faced and quite nasty, really. But he was just brilliant at it. Sharp as a razor. He'd take you down, any time he wanted to. I missed my opportunity to see him on his farewell tour, and I'll always regret it. But like I said on another post, when I watched his show on the internet, Les Patterson nearly killed me with laughter, so maybe I had a lucky escape :D

Madge invited Edna to accompany her and husband Douglas Allsop on the honeymoon. At Rotorua, Madge and Edna witnessed Douglas accidentally drown in a boiling volcanic mud pond. Is that why Madge was mute? Actress Emily Perry retired from the role of Madge aged 97 in 2003. Thank you Emily :-) RIP.
