Jay Leno plays this exactly right, just like Michael Parkinson in the UK - let Dame Edna run with it. Meanwhile, Elton is a good foil for Edna and Billie Jean has the best seat in the house. What a great lineup and well done Jay.

Jay Leno clearly did not like her funny comments about him, I have never seen Dane Edna do any famous host like she did Leno, it was obvious but no one cared. Leno deserved it not playing along, everyone, including the audience was eating up the whole crazy Edna Routine, it was hysterical. Jay you made a fool out of yourself, lol! But he did invite her back and it was a blast... This guy is not a dragqueen, nor gay, he's a balsa Australian married man, who's an actor that never left a money making character he created! 💲💲💲💲💲💲💲

The persona is made up to entertain and he also does another who is male like a stereotype of a leering and lecherous drunk, nothing like Edna, the lady. Likewise Robin Williams inThe Birdcage - not gay but plays it very well. Several hundred yrs ago women were always played by men in the theater. The others are homosexual in real life but the comedian playing "Edna" is not. But he is knee-slapping funny!

Barry Humphries as Edna is amazing. Reminds me a lot of Robin Williams in how he takes over the show and the host can just sit back and watch along with the audience. Jay has no control here at all lol
Dame Edna is in a class of her own. Not only did she commandeer the show from the moment she appeared, at 6:07 she got a good jab at Chevy Chase, who acted like a real asshole when he appeared on her show. The elegance of the insult is elegant, charming and full of venom. "Of course, little Chevy cut quite a few classes...." BRAVA!
The amount of comments that naturally use the pronoun 'she' or 'her' to describe Dame Edna Everage is testament to the brilliance of the late Barry Humphries. To have have successfully created such a convincing character that is in contradiction, so outlandish, so exaggerated that it should be obvious that this is nothing but someone in costume. Yet, that is the genius of Barry Humphries that he was able to find the fine line between just outlandish and exaggerated enough that Dame Edna was conversely, very, very convincing. A brilliant man that I think most of us wanted to be around forever.
