Thank you so much for this video - the instructions are brilliant. I have a 206cc 2.0L and thankfully on this model you can get to the 2 pipes in the engine bay without removing the battery or the air filter pipe - which made it a little easier. My matrix (which I think was the 19 yr old original) only had 1 bolt connecting it to the pipes - so I am surprised it hasn't leaked before - I have fitted all 3 bolts so fingers crossed the seal will be stronger! The trouble I have with the 206 is that white coolant bottle makes it really difficult to see the coolant level inside.
Really useful, thanks. The spectre of having to fiddle with my 206 heater box looms large because my fan squeaks and my Aircon smells bad. Anything that (even partially) demystifies these jobs is valuable. Aircon cleaner spray, proper stuff as I remember, was really just pretty smelly perfume.
Get the matrix looked at, could be all mouldy. Also, get a "bomb" put in the car from a proper A/C distributer, these clean and kill bacteria which can cause the smell
This is brilliant! I was investigating putting an electric matrix above the coolant-powered one, because it takes ages to warm up and defrost. Looks like it'll be a tight squeeze so might abandon that project!
Yeah, it shouldn't take long if the flow is correct and engine is running as it should. Many people blank the egr system...then moan it takes ages for the engine to warm up, for instance.
Also...if in doubt, flat out... Usually gets things warm and toasty... Worth checking it's not got an air lock too, these too air lock easily. ... But whatever you do... Subscribe 😛😉
@@PiggyPower Peugeot doesn''t sell these O-rings and why should I buy a new matrix if the old one is not leaking? The cause of the leak are the O-rings.
Because 50% of the time the O rings are leaking because of the housing the O rings are in. Plus a matrix is like £15 with O rings! If you're guna take it apart for 2 o rings... Why not replace the matrix while you're there?
Thanks - well made video - I think this solves part of my problem cause the o-rings are definitely leaking. I am not really losing a lot of coolant tho. My floor is quite wet after we had a lot of rain last week so I think it is leaking through the door as well.
Door seals are classic to leak also. Unfortunately it will only get worse with those O rings. If you check and there are bolts missing you might catch it...but unlikely as I have found. Thanks for the nice words. 🐷💪
@Piggy Power - could you tell me if it is possible to change just the 'O' rings without doing all the removal in the engine compartment, ie, can you just loosen the screw that holds the pipes in place? Cheers
Tell me about it... Hi mate, I recently bought a 206 and have a sloshing water sound behind the dash whenever the revs are up the sloshing noise matches. The engine temp is nice and solid at 80-90 after a good run with heater off and 70-80 with heater on. I also have good heat through heater matrix into the car but I have this sloshing noise. Anything you could advise? Thanks in advance! 😁

Are the hoses to the matrix hot? Is it digital display or manual controls? Matrix doesn't often leak drivers side, that normally is door seals (wetter when raining!) Let me know, I'll see if I can advise
the heater section is a mechanical selector. the aircon is not working and the indicator will not turn on and the heater motor is not working. i tested all the fuses in the engine bay and under the dash. none of them are blown there's a resistor under where the car LCD gose this might the problem the pipe has been hot at the heater end do i need to replace the heater resistor
Hi I've done this job on a right hand drive 206, it's a real nightmare. In the way, you have the accelerator pedal and the electric box with the fuses box and ecu. in order to support this electric parts, the lower bracket is renforce. I managed to do it but i had to force like crazy on this bracket. One thing surprises me in your video: Peugeot didn't move the brake booster/master cylinder on the over side of the car. They only create this dodgy shaft!! This is ugly !
I presume you mean left hand drive.... See the notes in comments and description as to how to overcome the LHD problem. As to the bar... Many manufacturers apply this strategy to LHD/RHD conversions to make building them simpler/cheaper! Well done for managing it still! LHD is tricky with this job! 🐷💪
nice! could you make a vid about the engine fan/ the fan in front off the car, and how to fix it? or maybe tell me where i can find the two green relays to the fan i think thats my problem

Yup! They saying buying a brand new car is more economical, especially if electric... Until you actually calculate the cost. £600 could buy you a decent enough 206. Put £400-500 in it to maybe freshen up the brakes and suspension and a service... And it will last you years and years 👍 then when it comes to a service, buy the oil and filter for £25 yourself and spend 30minutes doing it 👍😜🐷

It might. But it would potentially block up loads of water galleries elsewhere that you don't want blocked. Plus this is what, £15? A bottle of barleak or whatever is £7/8?! And eventually you'd need to swap it out anyway? A bodge is never the long term solution!

Someone had dropped a pencil down my ventilation-canals on my Citroen C3 (same as on Peugeot - it even has the Peugeot Lion on it) and this was blocking the airflow-controls. I had bought a inspektion camera - but this was not really helpfull as everything is dark in there. I then thought I could see more by removing the heater matrix - but no awail. Finally I deceided to drill first one - then another 20 mm hole from the other side, as I at first really could not see anything - but when I was just about to call it a day - I spotted something like a kind of black tube that was sitting vertical and blocking the aircontrol-wing from rotating. With a hook-shaped metal-wire I somehow got it tilted horisontal and I heard what turned out to be a pencil fall down into the matrix-slot from where I could retrive it - and now I could adjust the airflow without any problems and I just had to glue something over det 2 holes I had drilled. No need to remove the complete dashboard and the pencil could actually just have been left in there, if I had not already removed the matrix.
It seems like there are two versions of the matrix, one for automatic a/c and one for non-automatic a/c.. Have you any idea which one would fit a 2001 Peugeot 206 1.6 16V Roland Garros?
Thanks for the reply. The a/c, fan speed etc can be adjusted manually but there is a button which says auto, so i'm guessing that would mean it's got the auto climate control?
@@PiggyPower Managed to get the old one out, the auto climate control is the right one. On my car there is this bloody pin type thing, looks like a big nail attached to a electrical connector, i'd imagine a thermostat or something, it was just embedded into the matrix from the outside and was tearing along it as i pulled it out, didn't realise it was there until i got the whole thing out. Managed to bend it unfortunately but i'm a bit concerned about the way it was just pushed into the matrix making a hole in the fins, don't want to ruin the new matrix but i'm guessing it's important to have in there. Unfortunately there is no Haynes manual for the 1.6 16v for some stupid reason.
Haynes are useless anyhow. That's the temp sensor for the auto system, random that it's there though, usually not in that position. The video covers a auto climate system and the sensor isn't located there.

Turning the heater fans on or off has no affect on the noise. It's not particularly loud but kind of worrying. Again, thank you for the video!

It's on the correct side. Everyone else has it on the wrong side 🤣🙈 I can assure you your money is better spent on a new matrix and O rings than the additive which will either 1) not work 2) block coolant passages and cause more problems 3) work for a short while and then fail again

No worries! Glad you found it helpful! Indeed, I hate the coolant bottle design. So difficult to see the level! 👍🐷
A great video! I watched and followed the steps you described and managed to change the piping up to the heater matrix and the gaskets. Thank you! 👍👌
Well done 👍👍🐷
Really useful, thanks. The spectre of having to fiddle with my 206 heater box looms large because my fan squeaks and my Aircon smells bad. Anything that (even partially) demystifies these jobs is valuable. Aircon cleaner spray, proper stuff as I remember, was really just pretty smelly perfume.
Get the matrix looked at, could be all mouldy. Also, get a "bomb" put in the car from a proper A/C distributer, these clean and kill bacteria which can cause the smell
Is this the same issue for the gti180s? As mines started leaking and is it commkn for the 206 range to have this issue?
All share same heater box/matrix. Nothing special about the gti180 matrix 😜👍🐷
@@PiggyPower thanks for the tip! I'll have a look at that and hope it's not gunked up! :D
Also...if in doubt, flat out... Usually gets things warm and toasty... Worth checking it's not got an air lock too, these too air lock easily. ... But whatever you do... Subscribe 😛😉
Even felt smell of the heater fluid , thanks ,well done

Can you tell me what the size is of the 2 O-rings?
Honestly, I know what you're getting at, just buy the right ones, they are a slightly odd size and thickness. 👌
@@PiggyPower I want to buy the O-rings before disassembling the cooling system so I thought, maybe you know what the right size is.
You can buy them before, just buy from Peugeot or buy the matrix and they come with the O rings.
@@PiggyPower mine has only one bolt, there is room for 3
@@dutchconf that might be the issue. Try and find replacements before you take it apart. 👌
Great video, any same methode for the evaporator? I know normally we have to ooen the dashboard as well.
Much more of a pig to do... Dash out time iirc
@Piggy Power - could you tell me if it is possible to change just the 'O' rings without doing all the removal in the engine compartment, ie, can you just loosen the screw that holds the pipes in place? Cheers
You need to loosen the hard pipes from the bulkhead to give you enough movement .. otherwise you could end up breaking the ends
@@PiggyPower Cheers buddy
Well wish every heater matrix I tackled was as less tedious as that! Engineers take note when designing, think of the poor service guy! Nice job mate.
Tell me about it... Usually a day's work. 406s are the same by the way, no need to remove dash... 306s though, full dash out. 🤦🏻♂️
Watched guys at Mickys have to remove the entire front end and radiators out of a VW transporter this week, just to remove an alternator...
Remove the whole front subframe/engine to access a starter motor on a old A Series Merc. Such fail.

Try blessing the matrix...and check scuttle for water, the drains maybe blocked 👌
hi frm gary south wales found a puddle on both the driver side and passenger side heater off and not working and the air con is disable is it the fuse for the heater motor where do find to test it
the main radiator has replaced and coolant pump last year but the temperature gauge has been had at midpoint don't know what problem is
coolant will not calculate run the bottle
pleasee get back to me
Are the hoses to the matrix hot? Is it digital display or manual controls? Matrix doesn't often leak drivers side, that normally is door seals (wetter when raining!)
Let me know, I'll see if I can advise
the heater section is a mechanical selector.
the aircon is not working and the indicator will not turn on and the heater motor is not working.
i tested all the fuses in the engine bay and under the dash. none of them are blown
there's a resistor under where the car LCD gose
this might the problem the pipe has been hot at the heater end
do i need to replace the heater resistor
Resistor for the fan would be my next step. I have a guide video for that on my channel 👍☺️🐷💪
Thanks for the video 👍 I’ve got this to do on my 206cc. Much easier than the 306 I did years ago!!
Oh, night and day easy/hard! Under an hour easily with the 206 if it all goes well !
Information on wiring and relays is in your handbook or readily accessible online. Talking or showing about wiring problems can take hours or boring video, not very good content for RUclips. Often it just takes patience and some skills with a multimeter
Hello mate i have a question for you , i replace the Matrix But the smell ITS toxic , ITS like melt plastic ... But i don’t now Why, tomorow i change Again. The filter ita change , everiting ITS new
are you sure the smell is from the matrix and you dried out the heater box where coolant may have pooled?
@@PiggyPower the Matrix ITS cheep one, i buy a nother one and ITS ok Now ✌🏻
Is that brake light switch the one for lhd cars or both?
LHD just has the switch on the pedal...which would be there, because LHD. 👍😂🐷💪
Is it neccessary to disconnect the pipes in the engine bay?
Mine drips a little bit, guess it's been doing it for some time now. Haven't tried to replace a heater matrix before
Yes. Or you won't be able to remove the pipes under the dash.
This is one of the easiest heater matrix replacements out thereto be honest... Most need the entire dash to be removed!
@@PiggyPower oh well, i'll do that then 😁
Just gotta find out what i need of parts, before buying
Matrix, eBay, ensure they come with new O rings ... Shouldn't cost more than £20 delivered
@@PiggyPower it's a local store i can get a Valeo one from, so i can check if the o-rings is included.
I don't need anything for the rest of the dismantled part of the system?
in pegeote306 is the same process???
Not even slightly. Full removal of dash in a 306
well shit 🤦♂️
thanks for responding
I'm doing one next Friday and will do a video guide on how to do it as a few have been asking
Great video! Can i do that but just in cabine your work(no working under hood ,no disconekting pipe)thanks :)
Well, no, unless you cut a hole in the bulkhead ... But why do that if you can just lift the bonnet? What is preventing you from this?... Cant remove the matrix which is connected to water pipes without removing the water pipes!? 🙈🤔
Hello, I have 206cc 205 (uk version), I had a problem while pulling out the matrix. Dasboard creates obstruction while pulling the matrix out. Is there any trick for streching the dashboard. Or do I need to remove the dashboard
As you can see at 10:40 ... You just pull the part of the dashboard out of the way while removing the matrix.
@@PiggyPower Hello again, I can changed the matrix with new one today. But It leaks even if I only put the hose to the inlet. In other words, Even if I don't start the car, It is leaking. I oiled the new o rings and remove the old ones from the pipe that is inside. Tomorrow I will remove and put it again. Is there any recommendation for this problem. Thank you a lot for your understanding
There is only the O rings to leak, so check them
@@PiggyPower Do you think I couldn't put the pipe and raidiator togeter properly. Also, there is only 1 O ring to each pipe. In other words I am putting O rings to the pipes not radiator?
I'd suggest take it apart and look. You'll find the issue.
Hello Piggy.
I have the same problem but my steering wheel is left side!
Can i do the same work like you or i need to take off the dushboard ?
I've been told it is possible 100% to change just the 'O' rings on a LHD ... Not yet 100% sure on the entire matrix .. perhaps by removing the throttle pedal it allows access? I've not a LHD to look at, sorry
@@PiggyPower Okay i will give it a try. thanks for the answer !!! i am wary because here its cost 250 euro to remove the dushboard :(
Wow, €250 for 3-4hours?! 😮
@@PiggyPower yeah its so expensive :(
See another comment here... Removal of throttle pedal and then slight cut of the trim on the dash .. then it's doable on LHD 🐷💪
Do you have to drain all the coolant out the reservoir in the engine bay b4 removal?
It will drain anyway!
@@PiggyPower ok mate, mines just started a little leak after a slight bumper boink off a bollard🤣 but I think it’s only from the matrix itself, should I just get a new one or try and tighten it up?
Is it leaking inside? From the joint or from the matrix?
@@PiggyPower it’s leaking from the matrix box (the thing you pulled out) but it’s only a very very slight leak and I’m thinking it might have just shifted the seal/box out of place

Great cars. Damn cheap to own and maintain.
I am getting rid of my 2020 VW Polo for a car like this. 600 quid for a oil change and spark plug replacement. Absolutely nuts
Yup! They saying buying a brand new car is more economical, especially if electric... Until you actually calculate the cost.
£600 could buy you a decent enough 206. Put £400-500 in it to maybe freshen up the brakes and suspension and a service... And it will last you years and years 👍 then when it comes to a service, buy the oil and filter for £25 yourself and spend 30minutes doing it 👍😜🐷
Noticed I had this problem and saw it was a red like liquid and had a feeling it was some coolant getting in. I have the exact same symptoms so I assume it's that. My car is getting a big service and repair so I'll mention it to them and hopefully it's not too pricy (would do myself but it's winter and don't have a garage unfortunately). Very good video though 👍

Wonder if bar leak would cure?
It might. But it would potentially block up loads of water galleries elsewhere that you don't want blocked. Plus this is what, £15? A bottle of barleak or whatever is £7/8?! And eventually you'd need to swap it out anyway?
A bodge is never the long term solution!
@@PiggyPower agreed just 17yrs old wondering how much longer
How much longer for what?
If you mean how long will the car last... I find cars only become wasted/due for scrap once people stop taking care of them. Service them, keep an eye on rust, don't leave bad noises unattended... Cars go on for years beyond what most assume. Throw away society/wanting latest gadgets/models.
Huge kudos to your daughter being happy with the old 206! Drop us a DM if you want some help 👍🐷
What a story 😂👌
I didn't see where you put the foam
All the way round the outer edge of the matrix/heater core helping seal it against the heater box wall 👍🐷
Hi,where is the evaporator, how I can do the cleaning??
If you have AC the evap is deaper into the unit. You will need to go full dash remover.
What do you mean by cleaning?
It seems like there are two versions of the matrix, one for automatic a/c and one for non-automatic a/c.. Have you any idea which one would fit a 2001 Peugeot 206 1.6 16V Roland Garros?
Check to see if you have auto climate control or manual.... 👍
@@PiggyPower Managed to get it done, wouldn't have been able to do it without the video, thank you :)
Did manage to snap the part of the dashboard that's the bottom of where the glove compartment is, very brittle. Never mind, some glue should fix it.
Can i just check, should there be a noise coming from the heater matrix or around that area? Never noticed it before but it sounds like. i dunno maybe water flowing, maybe a fan spinning.. not sure if it's normal or if i did something wrong. Turning the heater fans on or off has no affect on the noise. It's not particularly loud but kind of worrying.
Again, thank you for the video!

@@henrikl7271 If your vehicle is LHD, it will be very tricky, as pedals and steering column will be in the way. Good video but you have the glovebox at the wrong side..... Just ordered a radiator addatief hope it works if it Don t then I go for the repair.....
It's on the correct side. Everyone else has it on the wrong side 🤣🙈
I can assure you your money is better spent on a new matrix and O rings than the additive which will either 1) not work 2) block coolant passages and cause more problems 3) work for a short while and then fail again
@@PiggyPower I had some good results in the past with those addatiefs( liqui moly or eurol.). And the core is stil oké but the o rings failed I guess,.... To remove that core on a left hand drive you need to lift the dash 3 or 4 cm and slide it out....
@@MrRichard57000 indeed. Just loosen the dash a little. Unbolted the pedals helps too on LHD.
Additives won't sort a o ring leak. If you suspect just the O rings, you may manage to replace just the O rings in situ. But I rekon it's easier to do the whole thing
Unfortunately for the left hand steering wheel 206s one needs to remove the whole dashboard to change the matrix ...
Someone messaged about doing it on a LHD and they just about managed it without dash removal... Not sure how though...maybe took throttle pedal out?
