I have been taking injections of low dose methotrexate along with folic acid for a rare skin condition called Morphea for a couple of years now. Have never had any side effects and it has completely reversed the Morphea. They do routine checks with me to monitor blood and liver function.

Methotrexate can cause vertigo, dizziness, and brain fog, which lasts after going off of it, but may eventually subside. Prednisone causes rapid weight gain and can cause diabetes. Big pharma needs to do better than this.

Prednisone was a life saver after a major flare up that my body had years back... Western medicine is great for acute issues, but when it comes to long term therapies my opinion is find a more holistic option... Just saying don't throw the baby out with the bath water. But I'm in complete agreement with you, MTX is a huge cash cow for big pharma.

Do you think that being on methotrexate for over 20 years could cause more side affects or have a higher fatality rate?

I've been taking MTX for over 16 years.A lot of side effects. Overthinking mean no control over thoughts.I.had to abandon my favorite habit of reading.Herpes zoster and then ether skin infections very frequent.Peripheral Neuropathy for which normal testes failed.2yrs back MTX doze was 7.5 kg but now over 15 mg with aggravated side effects.Right Shoulder requires Reverse Shoulder Replacement.Prostrate problem.Lower back pain. I'm 83, Wife passed in Corona
Living is a curse.Tragically people with RA live long.Any worthwhile subtitute for MTX,?

I have experience three clients on Methotrexate. The first one came to me after a critical rush to hospital and she was angry with her doctor. She continued Methotrexate therapy under this specialist and 18 months later she died from the Methotrexate toxicity. The other two clients who were on it experienced a very awful quality of life on the Methotrexate. After 18 months of no relief, one refused to use it any more and the other fell pregnant and had to stop it. I now have Psoriatric arthritis and there is no way I will take it. People do your thorough research before you just take your doctors word for it, especially in these Covid-19 times!

Sorry to hear about these stories. MTX is a serious medication and needs to be monitored closely. The good news is that for most with appropriate close monitoring, it is well tolerated. If this was not the case, we would not be able to use it. For those who cannot tolerate it due to side effects or if it does not help, clearly the medication should be stopped. The good news is that there are alternatives.

ive been taking methotrexate for the past 4 months after diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis....the other option is prednisolone which has more side effects...i feel prednisolone works better but im afraid to use it long term

@@coldogno7 Methotrexate is a disease-modifying medication, used to try and calm an overactive autoimmune process. Prednisone is used as a very good anti-inflammatory to settle the symptoms of excessive inflammation including pain and stiffness. There are used often in combination at different time points in the disease but the general aim is to keep the dose off Prednisone low and to use it short-term for flares, or for induction of remission or a low disease activity state. And yes, this is done to reduce the potential side effects. For more specific information, please do speak to your treating doctors.

Methotrexate is toxic. My partner has been taking it for 40 years. Her rheumatoid is under control ..just...(severe deformation of hands and feet and other joints exist) but she has limited mobility and has had weight loss. Nausea and sickness.
What to do? Dont take it.? Without methotrexate she would be completely motionless from head to toe. Talking, breathing normally and other automatic functions would stop..she has Myasthenia Gravis also.
    Good luck with Methotrexate.

My doctor said not to take folic acid on the day you take methotrexate but did not say why .Can you tell me why please let me know thanks.

With folic acid, there are many different regimens used by Drs including 0.5mg daily to 5mg once a week the day after MTX and many others. The clinical trial evidence we have is that using some folic acid seems to reduce overall side effects and particularly, liver test abnormalities. Theoretically too much folic acid may reduce the effect of MTX so some Drs suggest their patients avoid MTX on the day the MTX is taken. I am not aware of any clinical trial evidence to show that this is actually a problem in normal clinical situations. Dr Irwin Lim

+sandra martin Your Drs will perform regular monitoring blood tests to help judge the situation and to help adjust the dose. In addition, Methotrexate is co-prescribed with Folic Acid and this helps prevent liver test abnormalities.

I am going to assume folitrex is the same as Methotrexate. The answer is yes. MTX has been used in autoimmune inflammatory arthritis since the 1980s.
