- Today we attempt to drive my new-to-me 2018 BMW i3 REx 1400 miles from Oklahoma City to Los Angeles, California. We encountered a winter storm in Flagstaff, AZ that killed our REx (gas) engine. We were left with over 100 miles of driving to the next charging station, with only 40 miles of range, and ended up on the side of the road in the snow / ice. This is my story.

All that charging to save $60 bucks??? I'll keep my gas car lol.. good video
"Palm trees... homeless people?" Welcome to California, buddy!
I think you spent more money in the coffeeshop waiting for the car to be charged than the car electrical charging.
Uber Man, I had no idea you were coming here to Los Angeles! That's freaking awesome, man! What's even more amazing is the fact that you took an EV and drove it ALL the way to Los Angeles, KNOWING the risks involved, and you tackled it straight on.
And Randy the legend him self Said he didn't get Range anxiety because he has a range extender in his car!😂
Randy 200 years ago “ we’re going to do a trip across the territory, horse and buggy, I’m gonna bring one barrel of oats, we’re gonna plot our course through to the next general store to get some more oats, and at the end I’m gonna get an accurate measurement of oats per mile”
The i3 wasn't designed for long trips like this informative video showed. It's made for city driving. It's a fun car to drive but for long distance driving we use my girlfriend's Lincoln Nautilus.
What a giant pain in the ass. No way.
This video gave me a knot in my throat. I couldn’t have Dealt with all of that stress of waiting for power and wondering if the motors gonna work or not. Can’t use my heated seats or a heater. Naw I’ll stick to my car. At least for long trips. Just to save $35 dollars or so. But to each their own. Glad your patient and your happy with your new car...
My life is stressful enough. Could not deal with a car like that.
Randy better get a portable generator with you.
Wealth of knowledge about EV’s on this one! 😎👍🇨🇦
Just some minor advice from an EV driver:
Randy it's people like yourself that I admire, great video! I'm in the market right now to buy an i3. Most of my driving will be in the city. Thank you for taking the time and sharing (because you dont have to) your experience and the up's and downs of road tripping in an i3. Your video has not only convinced me to buy the i3, but also to plan a road trip once i get it. Lastly the tint on the windows is BADASS!!!! take care and be safe!
Great episode, Randy! Really puts the electric range anxiety issues into clear perspective. Good to see an honest, thorough account of long distance driving in an EV.
California (Los Angeles) native here and I've been through a couple of those agricultural inspections. You know what Randy its so amazing to see L.A. thru someone else's eyes. I love it! Great content. Welcome to L.A. hope you enjoy your time here
Great trip man. Love the views. Make me miss the days of long road tips visiting hospitals all over South Africa. Miss having that time to just see the county and spend time with yourself thinking about life.
Cool video Randy! Stopping that often and waiting around would test my patience for sure haha
Take more road trips Randy this content is 100 times better than sitting in the livingroom with my wife's Hallmark channel. ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED? :)
Let’s go!!! I’m excited to see this trip!!! I hope all is well Randy!!
