    the reason they are protected because a young girl swore she would stay in one red wood tree until the lumberjack company would stop cutting them down. She stayed on the we canopy of one redwood tree for about 700 days until they promised to stop, so she finally climbed down 101 feet down that tree and they even gave the tree a name, Luna. That's the history behind their hidden identity.

Put another way, this humongous fungus would encompass 1,665 football fields, or nearly four square miles (10 square kilometers) of turf.
      The discovery of this giant Armillaria ostoyae in 1998 heralded a new record holder for the title of the world's largest known organism, believed by most to be the 110-foot- (33.5-meter-) long, 200-ton blue whale. Based on its current growth rate, the fungus is estimated to be 2,400 years old but could be as ancient as 8,650 years, which would earn it a place among the oldest living organisms as well."

    Just wanted to say, we can grow these trees back, however it would take a lot of effort and time to grow back the 95% that no longer remain. Plus, because these trees are so big they take up lots of space for vegetation so we might not want to grow so many back.

    It’s not the only place that has a LOT of Redwood trees. If you go to Eureka, California and go to Headwaters (don’t know the full name sorry but I know it’s not the school) it has so many beautiful trees, scenery, old and run down buildings, a river, and much more. Honestly, I think Eureka is such a beautiful place even if the highest temperatures are only 65-77 degrees. Sure it isn’t that sunny but it has so many old houses, beautiful architecture, beaches, and so much more to explore. If any of y’all end up going you’ll see how nice the people are and how in everyone (almost) gets along so well. Especially if you go to the same school. My teacher always says, “I know it might not feel like it sometimes, but we’re all like a big family.”

      I’m more than happy to show the tourist spots.
      I guess seeing the redwoods everyday and having one in front of my bedroom normalize them. My relatives who are not local, it’s a bit funny to fathom a tree was just taking root during the crusades (1096) and was cut down around the 1870s.

    • @rorybaker2116
      @rorybaker2116 Год назад +59

      I dont really understand what this guy is talking about tbh, some of the tallest trees in the world were documented and are relatively easy to find. Almost all are in protected parks where it is illegal to log. The most harm ppl can really do to them is from excessive amounts of "tree hugging" which causes root compaction making the soil denser around the base of the tree and in turn harder for it to absorb water and nutrients. So yeah its not cool to like "expose" these locations, but to be fair the biggest ones are pretty far off the beaten path and are not really at risk of too many ppl gawking at them. Also the parks are not stupid they know where they are and close areas around some of the most pristine examples. Another aside, some of the tallest ones are not that impressive in width, so from the forest floor it really doesn't matter since you can only see like one half of the tree anyway.

    Actually, this isn't the largest living organism. The largest living organism alive today is a colonial organism called Pando which is an entire forest made up by the same tree. The trees sprouts new trees from their roots, meaning not only are all of the tree connected, they all have the same genetic makeup making them all the same organism. Though Pando isn't techincally the LARGEST, its the HEAVIEST. The largest is a massive underground system of mycelium that belongs to a single fungus. It's really damn big. Both Pando and the fungus are much bigger than this tree, though this tree is definitely very very big.

    I went to a forest near Arnold on a trip one time, and we came across a redwood tree that was enormous. We saw the trunk first, and then the remains of the tree afterward. It had looked like it was cut down a while ago, and stripped of it’s bark. There was no plaque, or any ropes roping it off or anything, it was just there. It was the biggest tree I think I have ever seen, probably even a couple feet thicker than the ones shown on screen. I’m sure that if that tree were still living, it would be thicker in diameter than the General Sherman, which is so famously known for having the thickest trunk it California. I went and saw the General Sherman a year after we saw that tree, and I was honestly disappointed, because that redwood tree was so incredibly big.

    Pando (Latin for "I spread")[1] is a clonal organism representing an individual male quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides). It was identified as a single living organism because its parts possess identical genetic markers[2] and it is assumed to have a massive interconnected underground root system. The plant is located in the Fremont River Ranger District of the Fishlake National Forest at the western edge of the Colorado Plateau in south-central Utah, United States, around 1 mile (1.6 km) southwest of Fish Lake.[3] Pando occupies 108 acres (43.6 ha) and is estimated to weigh collectively 6,000 tonnes (6,000,000 kg),[4] making it the heaviest known organism.[5][6]

    The largest living fungus may be a honey fungus[17] of the species Armillaria ostoyae.[18] A mushroom of this type in the Malheur National Forest in the Blue Mountains of eastern Oregon, U.S. was found to be the largest fungal colony in the world, spanning 8.9 km2 (2,200 acres) of area.[19][20] This organism is estimated to be 2,400 years old. The fungus was written about in the April 2003 issue of the Canadian Journal of Forest Research. While an accurate estimate has not been made, the total weight of the colony may be as much as 605 tons[vague]. If this colony is considered a single organism, then it is the largest known organism in the world by area, and rivals the aspen grove "Pando" as the known organism with the highest living biomass. It is not known, however, whether it is a single organism with all parts of the mycelium connected.[20]
