Yeah, almost as if rehabilitation over punishment has merit.
German prison is similar. I think its the better system. Yes, you don't get the "satisfaction" of making prisoners suffer in inhumane conditions for their crimes, but at least society is safer, because people are less likely to commit a crime again afterwards.
Im fine with that. Treating prisoners with respect is fine. Its good. Theyre still people. And sometimes people go to prison for not so evil stuff. In places with terrible prisons, you go to prison for minor theft and come out a hardened criminal. That doesn't help society.

For anyone unaware, Norway's mentality is: prison is about rehabilitation, not about punishment. If you put people in cells and treat them like animals, they're not gonna get any better, but if you actually give them decent living conditions and a therapist (iirc) to actually help them sort out their issues, they're gonna be much better citizens when they step out.
I honestly 100% agree with that way more, even if it does sound really wrong that a prison is such a good place to be in. It's counterintuitive, but it's effective

Also fun fact: In Germany, escaping prison is not a crime as long as you don't commit other crimes while you escape.
Clocking a guard over the head and breaking down a door would add time to your sentence once you're caught again, walking out the back door because someone accidentally left it open or climbing a fence would not add time - although you would of course still be incarcerated again for your initial crimes.
This is because the German constitution acknowledges that 'being free is a basic human urge' and therefore cannot be punishable.

Now imagine the faces of the victims when they again saw the arrested man who, for example, tried to rob them.
I am of course a moralist. But in my opinion, a person is DENIED OF FREEDOM and rights in prison precisely because he violated the rights and freedoms of another, and you know, that would be fair?

    • @szandorkane6372
      @szandorkane6372 2 месяца назад +157

@@mtf_iota-10 I mean it's not like they let them go free or stop looking for them? There is merely no added sentence for trying to be free, not because it's a moral right, but because it's human instinct. The punishment is deserved and they are indeed deprived of their freedom, but that doesn't quell the human instinct to not be incarcerated, so acting on that instinct in a manner that doesn't break any laws, is not punishable, which makes sense to me.

It's really not that. As someone from Norway that have talked with several people that went to prison, sitting in prison still isn't great even when all those things are supplied. Turns out robbing someone of their freedom to leave is a good enough punishment for most things. And quality of life have always been highly subjective and relative to both culture and the nature of where you live. In Norway certain things like the quality of your home is prioritized over most other things. As for the standard of living, that depends upon who and what time period you're looking at. Let's just say that currently the lower working class is growing, and so is a new financial class that's sandwiched between destitute and the working class. The new class (which is considerable enough in size to make a class) feature people that get temporary positions for part of the year, and have to quarrel with social security for 5-8 months just to pay the bills. Typically saving or owning much of anything is impossible in this class.

I think it’s also important to understand that even in American the way a prison is really depends on your crime/behavior when it comes to how you are treated and where you’re going. It’s a statistic that’s probably been erased from the Internet, but under Obama one out of three people locked up were illegally entered Immigrants locked up for something else completely and Obama stopped collecting data on those he called the “dreamers” (those who broke the law to enter the US under 18). Yes America has many people in jail/prison, but so many of them are not born and raised in Americans, but are traffickers that bring in millions of people and an estimated half million weapons, far more drugs and some are not even in jail for trafficking but other violent or dangerous crimes. Obama deported so many people, yet the actual history is so hidden in order to be politically manipulative and completely confuse people of all the things actually going on and why. Don’t forget in 2020 many prisons in America let the criminals OUT due to Covid. Huh? That’s just a tiny scratch at the surface. Our southern border has more “migrant worker children” going to those who just claim they are relatives then you can imagine, I don’t claim to understand the past four years of corruption, but I also won’t turn a blind eye if it gets exposed for what all its been looking like.

This type of person is always the first to begrudge those they see as lesser for any basic creature comforts they might enjoy. Its because money is far less worth than you ever gave it credit for- and the jump in happyness for each dime drops like an anvil as soon as you can manage your basic expenses.
It's ironic in a disgusting sort of way. Someone with close to nothing is more likely to share whatever little they have than you are- someone with means.

@@t_gabiuel6058 "We can't be humane or rehabilitate people, because we are too many"
The amount of people isn't an issue. Less people = less people to generate resources. When you have a large population, you have the resources to do amazing things due to the insane potential productivity that comes with it.
Rehabilitation is good for society and is cheaper in the long run. In the US, criminals are treated like shit and come out of prison with little to no chance to integrate back into society and fall back on committing more crimes, increasing both the total damage each person causes, and the cost of keeping prisoners locked up for a longer time at more occasions. Even though every day cost less, those days stack up. 200$/day for a total of 50 years is going to cost more than 400$/day for 10 years. The numbers are made up for simplicity, but you get the point.
We also get the effect that a rehabilitated person is less likely to re-offend, so the amount of victims per criminal decreases.
A rehabilitated person will instead participate in society and generate resources to society instead of being a drain on it.
Meaning that population is not an issue. You are losing more by having a shitty prison system, than a good one. A larger population doesn't change that.
