It is amazing to see the huge number of resting Monarch Butterflies all over the trees on the beach on Kellys Island in Ohio on the north side of the island in September. Literally millions! It’s one of my earliest memories. They are so tired after their long migration down from the Provinces of the Northwest Territories of Canada but they have just gotten started. These are not the same butterflies that flew up from warm Central Mexico where they head in the winter though. They are the children of those butterflies. They will rest on anything. Even a small child’s knee. Utterly charming experience from 60 years ago!

You forgot to show one of the coolest trees. It's the world's biggest "Cashew Tree". It's located in the State of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil (in the Pirangi's Beach). This tree only height 8 meters (almost 27 feet). But that's not the impressive thing about it...what is amazing is it's lenght. It ocupies an area of 9.000m² (square meters). And it could have 2 times more area (because they cut it to prevent danger to roads and houses of the neighborhood). This happens because the tree's branches end up curving down due to gravity and touch the ground. Once that happens the branch starts germinanting new roots (so people think it is a diferent tree, but it's just one, it's estimated that this tree equates to 70 trees of it's species). Years ago this tree would give 80.000 cashew fruits (2,5 tons of the fruit) per harvest season. Nowadays tough is still gives about 15.000 cashew fruits (about o,5 ton).

The sequoia redwood trees have a unique root system that is a marvel, compared to their mammoth size. Their roots are relatively shallow. There is no tap root to anchor them deep into the earth. The roots actually only go down 6-12 feet, and yet, these trees rarely fall over.

    • @22sojourner
      @22sojourner 2 месяца назад +7

    • @jackreisewitz6632

Actually, the redwoods are dependent on growing in groves to help break the force of the wind to avoid being toppled.
Loggers used to harvest too many trees in an area, leaving too small a population to break the wind. The remaining trees would then topple.
Of course, the fallen trees would then be harvested, too, "To keep them from going to waste."
And that was how preservationist efforts were circumvented.

True, Devils Tower is NOT a tree. It is composed of igneous rock. It was formed about 40 million years ago by magma intruding into sedimentary rock layers. The magma formation occurred 1 to 2 miles beneath the surface. It cooled very slowly, allowing it to arrange into columns that are up to 20 feet wide. The columns are usually 6-sided (hexagonal) in shape, although sometimes 4, 5, or 7-sided. This polygonic structure gives the surface of the Tower its angular appearance. After the Tower's formation far below the surface, the erosion of the surrounding sedimentary rock eroded away. By about 10 million years ago, this erosion began exposing the Tower's igneous rock which resists erosion. The Tower is 867 feet high. (Info from Wikipedia and National Park Service articles about the Tower.)

The Alerce tree, scientifically known as Fitzroya cupressoides, is a coniferous evergreen tree native to the southern regions of Chile and Argentina. It's renowned for its longevity, with some individuals estimated to be thousands of years old. In fact, the Alerce Milenario, or "Great Grandfather," located in Chile's Alerce Costero National Park, is believed to be over 5,400 years old, making it a strong contender for the title of the oldest living tree on Earth.

There are several cies of long lived trees that have been claimed to be over 5000 years old, but only the Bristlecone Pine is backed by ring data evidence. Slow growing rings from the outer part of the trunk where core samples can be taken CANNOT be extrapolated through the entire radius of the tree because growth rates are typically faster at first , then slow down dramatically as the tree ages. This mistake has erroneously led people to claim 2000 year old Yew trees in Wales are 5000 years old. Even the 2000+ year old Kauri of New Zealand would be calculated at 5,000 years of age if such schoolboy science was applied.
The most credible calculated age for Alerce is around the 3000 year mark. Very wonderful ! It does not need exaggeration.

26:28 IS NOT A TREE - NEVER WAS A TREE!!!
Geologists agree that Devils Tower began as magma, or molten rock buried beneath the Earth’s surface. It was formed by magma which cooled underground and was later exposed by erosion.
Column formations occur only in igneous rocks. Igneous rocks originate from lava (on the Earth's surface) or magma (below the Earth's surface). As the molten rock cools from a liquid to a solid form, it begins to contract. This contraction stresses the cooling rock which begins to crack. Cracks radiate out from stress points, forming hexagonal (6-sided) shapes.
The Tower columns are similar to those found elsewhere in the world, such as at Devils Postpile National Monument in California. However, the columnar jointing of Devils Tower is the largest and most spectacular example of this fascinating geologic phenomenon.
Another wonderful example would be the Giant's Causeway named the fourth-greatest natural wonder in the United Kingdom.

Great documentary. The redwoods in California are the most impressive I've seen in real life, I would love to the the Dragon Tree. But the distracting white dots that were added in a lot of the scenes I could do without. I've seen this effect before in other videos and I hate it. Whoever came up with this effect doesn't know anything about aesthetics, only distraction.

Sequoias are not the same as California Red Woods. Sequoias grow in the central California, while Red Woods are in Northern California. They are distinctly different species of trees. The confusion that they are the same is prevalent. What they have in common are: They both are giants, and they grow in California. That is it, they have nothing else in common.
