No it’s walking the cup side to side. Sliding the cup you on the opposite side reaching down coming up and your tungsten goes up the pull your puddle down to push it in. And you are keyholing
You ensure that you are getting adequate penetration for the root. When you are back feeding the the filler rod like this the metal is less likely to suck back after it cools, because it’s melting inside the pipe.
The guys that are really good now are getting a 4-year degree in welding technology. I know at least 1 young guy. The major universities have welding technology. They teach everything including how to do your business. Not just welding 2 pieces of metal together. This is the future in welding.

Are they bringing the filler rod up from underneath? I love TIG welding so clean, no spatter, and the final product is amazing looking.
There's a lot of satisfaction in producing tig-clean welds with a stick welder as well!

Why do you/What are the benefits of, feeding the rod through the back of the gap instead of just doing a laywire technique??

@Brennan Miller it can still suck back if you get ahead of the puddle. Backfeeding isn't the solution unless you don't have room and just have to.
