    I was one of the "lucky" ones that picked up the Q-P, brand new and heavily discounted from Leica right before they got discontinued. It was still an expensive purchase, no doubt, but it was worth every penny. I tried the Q2 at a Leica store in Madrid last December and after weighting out the price difference and specs, the Q-P seemed like a no brainer for me at half the price of a Q2, brand new. Best camera I have ever owned, hands down.

    Would have liked if you tested it more in low light. That's really what a lot of people have been torn about between the Q and Q2.

  • @Muchtoobizy

    I recently made a choice between the Q and Q2. I went for a used Q-P. I am surprised more people do not comment, as you rightly did, about the fact that a 28mm image cropped to 35mm, 50mm or 75mm is not the same as an image that originated on a 35mm, 50mm or 75mm lens. If Leica made an additional Q series camera with a 35mm or 50mm lens attached, I'd rather have two camera versions than one which is "croppable". I only ever make minor crops to my images anyway, so 24mp is fine for me for street photography.
    One other thing I like about the Q-P is the lack of the red Leica brand button. I use the camera in city back-streets where I cringe at the thought of looking smug with my expensive Leica camera. The Q-P makes me feel a lot less self-conscious. For the same reason I would never wear a Rolex.
    The Summilux lens on the Leica Q/Q2 is absolutely superb; a joy to use. By the way Evan; I think your photography is outstanding. Thank you.

    I’m a big fan of the QP. Is my go to street photography camera. I believe that 24 mega pixel is perfect for street. I would just love some weather sealing but other than that is one of my favorites. The Q 2 like you said if you need the extra reach with more resolution then boom is the one to go with. If I was a new to Leica I would take advantage of the q or QP since it should be available for a bargain.

      @@bak2mb is a limited edition camera that’s why but I bought mine for a relatively cheap price. So it depends when you search for it. Now everyone knows that the QP and the q will be cheaper due to the q2

  • @tomscott4438
    @tomscott4438 Год назад

    I will often shoot at ISO at 1600 or a bit higher, and the Q2 images (I test drove one) are pretty grainy over 1600. The new Q3 (yup, more money) addressed that by using a backlit sensor, but in this regard, the Q and Q-P lower pixel count might actually be a benefit. But then there's weather sealing, which doesn't just protect against water but also dust.

  • @Chazyfizzlez
    @Chazyfizzlez 4 года назад +2

    Strongly prefer 24 megapixels of the Q. The Q2 is also noticeably worse in low light. Leica also said that the Q2 weather sealing deteriorates over time. The small ergonomic changes of the Q2 are nice though and the OLED EVF is way better on the Q2. I'd still choose the Q for the price especially if you have an M10 or SL and you want similar files to work with. Get Q2 if you shoot the SL2 or M10R.

    Back in 2020 I bought a second hand almost not used Q, because I was looking for a LUX 28 for my M 240. The Q was in mint condition and came for 2,700 USD. That was far cheaper than a second hand LUX 28 and I got a camera body for free. A big plus over the Q2 is the on/off switch with the selector for single and continue shooting. That's the same feature as on the M 240 and M-P 240. I'm not cropping to 35 and 50 because I've a LUX 50 and SUM 90 for my Ms, but the video feature I've used several times for short clips for a local online newspaper. I keep the Q on 12 MP on daily use. Only when shooting macro, I often switch to 24 MP. The Q can be kind of weather sealed by taping over the microphone and loudspeaker holes. To get a better grip on the Q, I've put a small stripe of anti slip tape in the mould (?)/ grip hole. The Q is not my first camera, it's a wide angel/macro/backup camera - and it's cool.

    I have hankered after a Leica Q for the past few years. But I have never hankered after more megapixels.
    The best camera I have ever owned, and I still worship is the Nikon Df, it is amazing - but the files are 16MP, and I fail to see what I would get for more - other than file size. It is a lowlight super beast, and many professionals have one in their bag, for the reliability, and amazing image quality.
    I still want a Q, but it is worth noting MP is not everything.

    awesome video thanks. Personally I fancied the Q for the more IMHO manageable files sizes, but I went for the Q2 as it's newer and is weather sealed. I had the Q2 for 14 days until I killed it at an arts show, the camera took a direct hit from a laser and fried the sensor. It's currently on the way to Germany. I have my eye on a used, and damaged Q going cheap locally. The damage is the LCD doesnt work so everything is done in the EVF. I'm fine with that.

    Dude I like your content! I have have the Q2. It’s a beast... it’s that Q 3D image quality with more room to crop. As my only camera that res was important to me. If I had multiple cameras then I would have gotten the QP. I think low light noise chatter is a little over blown. It’s twice the resolution so everything is magnified. I also don’t shot is pitch darkness. Same argument as the focus length 95% of what I shot is wide so it works for me... if 95% of you shoot isn’t in the dark, then it’s still works.

    Nobody EVER discusses that this is a different sensor made by another manufacturer. Its only MP, but a sensor is not a sensor and if you take the MP out of the equation, the rendering of the Q sensor in combination with the Maestro is spot on for me. Love the cinematic feel of the images that come straight out of camera. From what I have seen, the Q2 isn't as pleasing to me? Would love to see side by side images comparing this! Maybe the Q has more "Leica Look" than the Q2 - it's possible they weren't able to get that "magic" on this verison - it happens.

    • @crayon2323
      @crayon2323 4 года назад +3

      i had both and stayed with the Q. i found the sensor on the q2 to have slightly better color but had a lot more noise in low light. my theory is that when the Q came out leica had never done something like this before and did a huge overkill on the image stabilization thus making the Q still very relevant today. they realized this and changed the stabilizer on the q-p and the q2. neither are as good in low light as the Q. having tried both i prefer the Q but if i could have both i would. they are very different in terms of sensor.

    I would add to be careful on used Q/Q2 ; if previous owner did a lot of videos, you'll have sensor issue way faster than someone who used it primarily for photos. And you don't want to spend the economy you did over a new one, on a sensor replacement at Leica. Something to keep in mind.

    For the life of me, I don’t understand the Q attraction. Everything and more on the Q is better on the cl for most shooters in my opinion. The cl’s crop sensor is just fine and besides, your (changeable!) 50mm lens gets you to 75 w/o sacrificing megapixels! Not even the Q2 does that.

  • @thomasgoetze
    @thomasgoetze 4 года назад

    Q2 over Q means more pixel and weatherproof for me. If a Leica Q is the only camera I will own, i would choose the Q2. On the other hand, my other camera is a Sony A7M3 with some very fine lenses (you should try out the Zeiss 55mm/f1.8 - so beautiful). So i choosed the Leica Q (Type 116). For me, my Q offers me a complete different way to take photos than any other camera I used before. When it comes to handling and finding pictures the Q feels more like my old Mamiya 645 Super . You (well, I do) look different to the world with a Q in your hand. My Q slows me down to get more of the scenes I'm in, but is fast enough to react to special situations.

    Audio is great! However, it’s awkward seeing you talk to the microphone and not to the camera. Your eyes move away from the camera like you don’t know where to look while you are talking to the microphone. It’s a disconnect thing. Maybe if the mic was in line with the camera somehow, you could still be facing it while looking directly forward at the camera. I don’t know. Maybe it’s just me. Just looked awkward.

If you shoot lots at ISO 6400 (I do) such as interiors they're both do a respectable job but a good recent apsc such as a Fuji will do better. Anyone interested I'd say get a used Q.

      totally agree, i have both and leica q sucks at low light, the fuji does better in iso and colors in low light situations. But... at outdoors leica is better, mostly in landscapes. Anyway xpro2 has changable lenses, leica q does not, so both cameras can do really good job, it's up to you, you can't go wrong with any of this two.

      @@charliobrown3960 Yep, bang on. This doesn't mean of course the Leica's aren't any good for iso 6400, they're just not 'that' good. With a bit of messin about in PP the Q/Q2 at 6400 can be OK.

    Is the square that shows the different focal lengths only on JPG? I thought it was RAW also (but obviously the RAW still has the full 28mm focal length). My plan for buying this will be be use it as 35mm and almost use the additional space around as almost a rangefinder kind of view (so you can watch people coming into frame).

    Thanks for the video ! I have 2 questions:
    1. I've never owned a Leica, but the Q2 is very appealing. I do photography as a hobby, mainly with family and when traveling, so recently I've been thinking that a fixed lens camera might be fine for me. The Leica Q2 is VERY expensive, but typically Leicas retain value, as they are considered classic cameras that people can use for a lifetime. But my question is about digital Leicas: will these really be cameras to use for a lifetime, when technology changes so quickly. For example, if I buy a used film Leica now, I can likely sell it in 5 years and it won't have gone down much in value. But in 5 years, the Leica Q's EVF, sensor, AF, etc may seem very out of date. So, what are your thoughts on Leica digital cameras retaining value for many years (or decades)?
    2. What's the story with the ads in the form of promoting a product? I wasn't surprised to hear you do a little 'commercial' for Squarespace, but it used about 1.5 minutes of your 10 minute video ! Do they give you money where the amount is based on how long you talk about their product? Do they give you a script you have to read? I think I am a bit cranky right now, so I apologize for this little rant, but I got annoyed at how long you were talking about Squarespace, maybe in part because I have heard SO MANY of these Squarespace plugs on other sights (like the Northrups videos)! Is it necessary for the product commercial to be so long?

      Sorry for jumped in, want to answer the number 1.
      My experience with Leicas is never buy the new one, always buy the used, i'm not saying that it's bad, but usually when you buy new, and one day you want to sell it, usually the price will have to go down at least 20-30% (depends on the usage). And with digital one, we can take a look at M9 till today with the change of sensors the price still almost the same with M (240, 262. 246). M240 series is being rebadge as M-E 240 with the same sensors. I think Leica's approach is to keep offer the 'pure' photography experience, where user can only use camera only taking pictures with usual settings (Aperture, Single point focusing, and high quality lens), i think they'll use this concept for as long as people still love using camera like we use 60 years ago. And their digital might be the problem if the parts broken is the sensors, unlike their film cameras, where you can service it everywhere. They don't offer M9 sensors anymore maybe 3 years ago. So i think at least every Digital leicas released will hold for 10-15 years (for parts and official services), but it's still good, considering other camera brands only have 3-5 years for every camera, with every year, they released new technology, that makes you have G.A.S. So yeah different kind of investment if you're into Digital leicas unlike their film bodies or their manual lenses.

    Quick note- when I was talking about the crop modes I should have mentioned the crop is applied to the image when you load it into Adobe Lightroom BUT the raw file itself is still the full size version (no crop applied) I’m sorry if this was confusing to anyone. What did y’all think about the audio on this one? Its cleaner but did it feel too much like a podcast? Let me know! Also big shoutout to all the Patreon members! I just posted a new Q&A video on there for the month of July, go check it out! ---- Side note correction 2- someone messaged me with some mind blowing info. The Q does have an interval mode but it’s hidden in the menu. You have to go to scene mode and then time lapse all the way at the bottom.
