    One tip I use frequently is when buying sheet goods look for damaged edges, broken corners etc. I usually will get 30 to 40 % off on damaged goods. And almost always I can cut around any damaged areas. Another paint savings can be had if you want gallons and all they have are quarts. You’ll get the gallon price instead of 4 individual quart prices. When buying black iron pipe plan on buying a full length and have them cut and thread the sizes you need. There’s no extra charge for them to do it. Leave a cut list with the employee running the machine and go do all your other shopping while they are doing that for you.

    Great job, Dave. As a HD long time associate, I would like to add that generally speaking HD does not price match with Harbor Freight. Also, ask before expecting a price match on online retailers. Lastly, if there is an open dumpster please ask the store management before dumpster diving and know that HD insurance will not cover you if you are injured. Thanks again Dave for great tips and tricks. And -watch for yellow tags for extra savings.

    I have found, for me personally, that Home Depot is where you get your building materials to get the structure done and Lowes is where you go to get your decorative finishes, like ceiling fans, fixtures, flooring etc.

    Thanks for the tips Dave. Here's one I use to save time shopping: I order online for store pickup. You can't always rely on what the website tells you is in stock, so I will just wait for them to notify me that the items are ready for pickup. There's no added cost and no need to go and search for stuff.

    I agree with the previous comment. At Lowes there is no yearly limit on Military purchases. The discount is easy to use at the register. I have gotten free paint. I have bought mistint paint for $10 a gallon -my 10% then gotten a manufacturer's rebate for $10.

    • @jmackinjersey1
      @jmackinjersey1 6 месяцев назад

      As a contractor and DAV, the yearly limit doesn't really bother me. I've only gone over that limit once since they implemented it. No, I don't pass the discount to my business/customers, I use it for my tools or items and/or materials I buy for the business or my home.
      Regardless, I don't mind the limit because the way I look at it, it is a gift, and I appreciate any little gift I can get, bit don't begrudge them for having a limit.
      Is Lowe's "no limit" better? It could be, but I don't go to Lowe's all that often to buy materials or tools. Not to mention that I'd feel gross if I used the discount for materials to use on my client's projects.

    10:20 Another tip on the Oops paint, you can have them add additional color to a can, say they have a light blue Oops paint, you can pick that up and have them add more color to make it a darker blue or purple, they can make pretty much any color into a brown. You have to be aware doing this will never get you to an exact color of what you want, but it can move you towards what you would prefer by darkening the paint.

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife 10 месяцев назад +2

      A common thing I would see contractors/flippers do is buy _all_ of the oops paint and have it mixed together into whatever color it became, mix _that_ 50/50 in a 5 gallon bucket with white, and then paint entire houses with it. It would almost always end up being an acceptable shade of beige/white. Most people in that business know that the buyer is going to end up painting it to their taste anyhow, so it really didn't matter what color they used as long as it wasn't offensive. It would save them nearly 50% on paint costs since the "oops" paint is basically free.

    A couple of clarifications and another tip. Home Depot will price match competitors but not itself. So if the price is lower online or at another HD then you have to buy at the other HD or online. This can lead to crazy scenarios like standing in the store buying the item online to get the lower online price and then walking over to the order pickup desk to get the item that you just saved $50 on. It is crazy but it works.
    Also, you can get a $100 to $200 discount by getting their credit card at the same time. And You can have more than one HD card. just stop using the card and they terminate it after 6 months. The great value of the card is that it generally extends the return period to six months.
    And you can't overestimate being nice, polite and friendly. Associates can and do give you discounts.

      The Home deport military discount computer forms ask for wayyy to much personal info and military info. AND this computer form they make you fill out is a 3rd party company that says in the notes they will sell your info!! BEWARE. If you look up compaints about this HD military form you will see many people say it's a "Scam" to "beware". I agree. Beware who you are giving info away too even if it's a company like HD but has a 3rd party keeping all the info on you. You have to ask these days "Who is this 3rd party selling your MILITARY info too"???!!!. Question everything when a company wants so much person & militiary info on a form just to give you a discount.
      Lowes does not make military fill out this personal/miltary info form like HD. So that is where I shop = lowes.

    As a Pro Member, you get a 1 year return window I've been told. I've not tried that.
    The oops paint is cool, actually, during pandemic, my friends son wanted to paint his bedroom. My friend told him fine, but you have to pick a color from the oops paint. Thing is, they needed 2 gallons. He found 2 cans of blue, same brand and type, but 2 slightly different shades. For the added cost of a 5-gallon bucket, the paint buy poured both cans into the bucket and mixed them up. End product was great and they had enough left over to also paint a hallway the same color since they liked to so much.

    If you see a clearance tag where the cents does not have a 3 in it, then the price will drop again. If it has a 3 in it, then it is at its lowest level and the next level it will be pulled from the shelf. It's not all the time, but some times it can be a huge discount.

    I’ve used the veteran program. Lowes, too. There ya don’t often get a double dip meaning sale item and discount. For Home Depot not sure since hadn’t bought a large sale item since they changed their program.
    Ya gotta be signed into the app and they generate a new scan box each purchase visit. Royal pain compared to showing my military ID.
    So far I’ve gotten 10 % off all my purchases.

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife 10 месяцев назад +1

      The "double dipping" can go store-to-store, manager-to-manager, and depends on the purchase. Many moons ago I worked at a HD who had a disabled vet (hearing loss in one ear) as one of the assistant managers. I don't think I ever saw him give a veteran less than 20% off if the order was a couple grand or more. Same thing with orders for anybody of something like $10k+ of kitchen cabinets or a whole house of flooring or something. You should absolutely always ask if your order is more than a few hundred bucks. At that time, even me as a lowly head cashier had the authority to discount anything I wanted up to 10% up to $200 for any reason I wanted. They normally wanted it to be a _good_ reason, but I never had any push back the times I did it.

    Another tip is to shop at the store in your area that has the obviously lower foot traffic. If the store is hurting to make their sales numbers, they are more likely to cut you a deal if you ask nicely. Same thing goes for stores in the "bad part" of town. I worked at the #2 highest theft HD store in the country (which has now long ago been closed), which also had a _terrible_ physical location so we were a slow store as well (this was half the reason we were the "highest" theft store... we had very low sales to counteract the numbers), and we would pretty much beg customers to buy things if the order was big enough (over a few grand). The mark up on flooring and fixtures and kitchen cabinets and stuff was mind boggling, so 15-20% off was not uncommon on large orders of those items in our store, no coupons or anything required. Just a willingness to spend big and haggle. 😅

    If you are buying quantity above a certain amount HD, you can have it delivered rather than you picking it up. Also you can access the HD cataloge in the store. The online cataloge has double the number of items as the store and often at a discount. You don't have to take a complete panel of sheet goods, HD will cut it for you on the store panel saw for a small fee. I think the first cut is free. You can't return after its cut. You can rent a truck to take your items home for only $19.00 at my local HD. HD prohibits a trailer on the truck. If you rent a machine, you need to use your own truck to pull it. There is a special place in the store that I call the "bone yard" where odd and outdated things are sold at a discount. HD also has a section of the store for "scratch and dent" where items are significantly marked down. It still has the same warranty. When looking for cabinetry, HD changes out diplays regularly. Check to see if they are planning a change and buy the old display at a discount.

      I worked in retail as a young man for years
      And manufactures will make the same item like a drill and sell one at store A with one sku number and to store B with a different SKU number ...
      Or model number may be one number off ..
      That way if you go in with an add from store A and try to get a price match from store B they can say no it's not the same exact model or sku

    Veteran here...the app is pretty good at telling you what the actual price is going to be, and whether you're getting a veterans discount or a volume discount. Volume discounts aren't, as far as I know, limited, but the veterans discount is limited to $400 per year, which means max of $4K worth of stuff discounted. I haven't hit mine yet, but I have a veteran buddy who does a lot of resale who ends up asking friends to use their discounts.
    ALSO...their app will also tell you what aisle and bin a product is in, so when I'm headed in for something I usually pull it up to find it. Be careful, though, because the app will also key in to nearby stores when the product is out of stock at the store you're in, so you might end up in, say, toilet supplies, when you're looking for a couple of bolts (true story).

Penny items are not to be sold and are supposed to be taken off the shelf but I’ve unknowingly bought some at the self checkout. Thanks again!

    I live 5 mins from lowes & 6 mind from homedepot. I like homedepot better, better discounts oh their damaged or discounted cart items. I also get $50 or $75 in yool rental coupons every time I reach a certain level of spending. And get $10 off $200 coupons every now and then. I have linked a business email to all hardware stores.

    . Home Depot, Lowes, all have their advantage and disadvantages. You are probably too young to remember what a hardware store used to be like. The old timer that knows everything to help get the right stuff. Still a few mom and pop shops around where they do not have a lot of one thing but one of everything. You paid for nails by the pound and put it in a paper bag with a little wax added to keep them from ripping. Slowly they are all going away for the big box stores. I found myself at lowes a couple times helping people with their plumbing repairs and getting the correct piece to make the repairs themselves. I used to think after my body can’t handle the grind of the trades I could get a job at a hardware store but now they don’t need that person they need someone who can up sale you on a front loading washer. Or riding lawnmower. Great video I am enjoying your channel, even though I might never use the information or even agree with some of the opinions you had on them. The videos are well produced keep up the great work.

    You can always mix different cans of oops paint to make a color you may like better. I worked at a paint store. The owner told me to mark all the oops down to 1 buck. So I bought 20 cans. I figure I could always come back and adjust the color since I worked there. Put the paint in the back of my hatchback and shut the hatch. Didn't save much since I busted the back window out.

    Years ago my father bought a few things and used his military discount. what with one thing and another we decided to return a couple of items unused. They told us that unless we returned the entire purchase as listed on the receipt it was subject to a restocking fee, like 20-30%. IDK if it was because of the military discount or if it was a standard policy.

    Since what is labeled in stock at your local store is frequently in error, I'll order it on line for local pick up and let them waste their time instead of my time looking for it. I'll get a notice if they they really don't have it in stock. One thing I like about HD over Lowes is the ship to store option. I am trying to buy some inexpensive items at Lowes, but the nearest stock is 20 miles away and not worth the trip to see if it's really even in stock there. They won't ship it to my house or to the local store. I'm just out of luck.

    My tip is to always check the promo displays up front, especially for things you use often, for me this is Sawzall and saw blades, tape measures and bits. They'll often have promo two-for-ones there, while tge exact same items are full-priced on the shelves in back.
    One complaint is they, and every other big-box store, have slowly discontinued tried and true brands and replaced them with brands that they own. A Swanson Speed Square? Nope. Just knockoffs.
    Perhaps you've done a video on this, but HD and Lowes own nearly all of the tool brands.
    HD over Lowes for me, mostly because I'm more familiar with the stores.

    @3:20 you talk about customer satisfaction. That gave me a good belly laugh. I had a few of the HD brand of LED light bulbs fail in the warranty period. I went in 3 different times, different times of day, talked to three different people at the customer (non) service desk. The package instructions listed a non-working HD web page for warranty claims. Each time the CS rep tried the page and got the same non-working results I got. Each anti-customer service employee refused to do anything to honor the warranty. More and more of HD's products are HD branded. Yep, I prefer Lowes, but Ace and True Value are even better. FYI, writing to corporate did not get a response either.

      My experience with Home Depot has been the exact opposite. I needed the ryobi 18v straight string trimmer and my local hd didn’t have it in stock. Well the app showed that another store about 10mi away had like 7 in stock so I headed that way. When I got there they didn’t have any in stock and the floor associate acted like they weren’t going to be able to help me but once I asked to speak to a manager they took care of me. I told the manager they had the combo kit with the trimmer and 350cfm blower in stock and if they could give me a discount on it. The manger price matched the bundle to the cost of just the trimmer and then gave me an extra like 20% off of that to compensate me for my gas. They got my business for the foreseeable future.

      Also, on the supreme court case, In 1988, the Supreme Court ruled in State of California v. Greenwood that searching trash is legal as long as it does not conflict with any city, county, or state ordinances. So they left the door open and some places have passed health and safety laws, trespassing laws, or littering laws that prohibit it.
      The supreme court case was more about the 5th ammendment and unlawful search and seizures and not dumpster diving per se. They ruled that once a person put their trash on the curb they had no expectation of privacy and their trash could be searched by police, or taken by a neighbor, stranger or whatever. It ceased to be their property. That does not mean that a local ordinance couldn't say that dumpster diving was a nuisance and prohibit it.
