*"As vast as an ocean, but as deep as a puddle"* is the most appropriate way to describe this movie
You could cut out like a third of it, most of that just being the characters gawking at the scenery, and you'd lose basically nothing
And how do you have a 3 hour movie, a *sequel* , with so many characters but have most of them still feeling like cardboard cutouts

I haven't seen it but if the Navi are still on Pandora wouldn't they already be used to the scenery and sea life on their own planet? Why would they all be awestruck and wide-eyed by things they've known about and see day in and day out? Cameron's movies are incredible, the guy may be a self absorbed Hollywood douchebag but he never really misses, that said it seems like he mightve been smelling his own farts a bit too much on this one.

I typed this on the Drinker's review and I'll type it here:
A smarter plot would have been to have the humans team up with a different Na'vi people who hated the main Na'vi from the 1st people, and agree to help the humans get their own patch of land in return for helping them. You could have a reveal that the reason behind this hatred be due to the fact that the main Na'vi that we're used to were in fact once a ruthless warrior people who ruthlessly murdered and forced out those that stood in their way so that they could keep the great tree themselves, only turning pacifistic sometime after.
This could shine a darker light on the concept of the Toruk Makto by revealing that, although a great hero to his own people, the previous ones were in fact ruthless killers and conquerors in their own right who helped their people at the expense of other tribes. While these tribes initially stayed away from them during the 1st movie, the aftermath of the human attack, while unsuccessful, proved to these people that their ancestral enemies were not invulnerable. As such, for the tribes aligning with the humans, they're simply fighting to take back their ancestral home and get revenge for what could possibly be decades or centuries of abuse and cruelty that the Na'vi we're used to have not been held accountable for. . Also, since colonization is a theme in both this movie and the previous one, you could at least have this be a reference to Hernan Cortes, who defeated the Aztec Empire by aligning with smaller tribes who hated the Aztecs, and worked together to overwhelm them.
To make the human villains more interesting, you could establish the human general as being a loving father himself, who wants to ensure that his kids, wife, and other family members can have a new home, and simply views his actions as a cruel but necessary act to ensure their survival. In fact, you could even have it so that the human soldiers have been given a deal that as reward for their services, their families will be the 1st to be taken from Earth to Na'vi home land, adding some motivation for everyone. Maybe even show a gradual friendship between the human soldiers and the other Na'vi, hinting that there may in fact be a chance for peace between the 2 races.

The soul drive (the mind transfer thingy) is totally world-breaking. This means that humans have become technically immortal, they can grow their clones (or avatar bodies) and pop in their meat suit at any time. Not only does this make humans factually unbeatable, but it absolutely removes the need in anti-ageing whale juice. They’d done the “altered carbon stacks”, they srsly can just keep clones on hand to extend life.

That way they wont miss it.
I agree Gary (Nerdrotic) can come of as pretentious sometimes, especially if youve never seen him before.
I dont think he necessarily IS being pretentious, its just the way he sound, but I can easily see why someone would think he is.
He talks with alot of conviction and authority but thats cuz he kinda does have that authority.
He is one of the most knowledgable and well read people on the things he talk about.
He knows ALL the lore so well that he can often specify what exact issue the data comes from.
It he reviews something he DOESNT know alot about he is very clear that this is NOT his forte and that he can be wrong.
That doesnt always make him correct ofc, not even on things that ARE his bread and butter... but it does give him that superior and sometimes seemingly pretentious attitude.
The other guys I watch I cant really say that I agree that theyre pretentious.
They may not speak like theyre talking to a friends, but I have never gotten the impression that theyre trying to be someone theyre not.
While they are very sometimes very firm in their beliefs, theyre pretty much all rather humble and geniune guys if you listen to what theyre actually saying.
Ofc I dont know who youre talking about, maybe you mean completely different people tham the ones I watch.

6:50 If I were generous enough to forward a guess as to how the talking whales make sense, I would say that you’re exactly right that they don’t. Just because they’re big with proportionally bigger brains doesn’t just result in the brain structures and complex language and social skills that the whales are supposed to have. So let’s suppose they’re not natural, that they’re an intentional hint towards Pandora not being a natural environment.
We even have another in this movie: the sea people. They would need hundreds of thousands of years of living separately from the forest people to have evolved differently, and the fact that they have the same language says that didn’t happen. Ergo, the sea people were engineered, too.
We’re probably meant to point at the plant-root-planetary-neural-net that the Navi call Eywah as the entity responsible for it. If it’s as complex in its structure as the first movie implied, it might just be capable of engineering the entire planet’s ecosystem to its whims (including giving whales intelligence just because).
That might be something a later movie explores: the origin of the Eywah entity. Did it accidentally itself into being or was it engineered too, possibly by a long-lost progenitor race? Did that race kill itself the same way Cameron says the evil humans in these movies are? Are we supposed to be looking at this as a pro-trans-humanism argument (humanity can save itself and the Earth if we just engineer all the bad stuff out)?

    • @MVPMVE

I don't get why JC's Avatar gets so much hype. They're practically the new Matrix franchise considering both have an emphasis on visual eye candy (and even then the Matrix is somehow better). You can have the most important "message" for humanity, but if the story and characters do not hold up, your "message" will fall on deaf ears. These films are basically BBC's Planet Earth slapped together with a Captain Planet-esque premise.
Why not write a more powerful and engaging story with memorable characters? Those things will actually magnify the importance of the "message" instead of the other way around. Oh wait, there was a movie that already did this. It's called Wall-E, which funnily enough was ALSO made by Disney (well Pixar to be precise).

I think the problem is actually the opposite of the movie having just 3 hours of filler. If anything, the movie should have been longer to really develop all of these major ideas (and maybe scrap a few of the bad ones, like the whale juice). The main issue I think James Cameron is having is the fact that he is trying to simultaneously develop 5 movies that all have the major plot points, and he is organizing these points across the 5 movies to the point where he is almost marginalizing these ideas and not allowing the story to flow in an organic way. The result is what we got with this movie. Hopefully he can realize the problem and steer the ship in the right direction for the next few movies.

I'd rather Cameron direct other writer's stories. The fact that he wants to do two or three more sequel films shows his ego is probably planet sized. In the first movie I was under the impression that the Avatar bodies were just that.
Avatars, remotely controlled dummy bodies to represent you by proxy...
Now theyre telling me these are fully functional, artifically created, living organisms, piloted by *UPLOADED INTELLIGENCE?*
Why the fakk was the first movie about some stupid metal?
And why is this one about *whale brain goo?*
(The second one would be a question regarless)
Never mind that they essentially cracked the secret of eternal life but why was the first movie not about ALL the highly questionable moral, ethical and philosophical issues that this would entail.
    Are Jakes kids even his?
Its not his DNA, It literally CANT be.
The body he pilots must have its own DNA or 1. they wouldnt have kids at all cuz theyre different fakking species and 2. the Kids would most definitely NOT look Navi if you somehow managed to splice Human and Navi DNA togeather.
If these are actual living, *grown* Navi bodies, are we just gonna brush aside that these are ACTUAL Navi people purposely grown *without a mind* to let Human essentially infest and control them?
And thís is the "good guys" doing it.
People, IN REAL LIFE, are bxtching over stem-cell research.
This is that on the most ridiculous steroids imaginable.
What on earth would make anyone would think this was an ok practice?
If theyre not grown but somehow completely artificaily created that would mean mankind had developed *PERFECT biological engineering.*
Literally the ability to *script and implant biological code.*
Can you Imagine the implications of that?
You wouldnt even need a Navi body, you could just engineer the human body to be able to breath on Pandora.
And if you had perfect biological engineering you could do this to already living people.
No climate disaster on planet erarth would be a threat, short of the sun literally exploding, cuz you could just fix it by manually adapting our species to it.
    Ozone layer? Who needs it?
Air pollution? pfft, what a joke.
You would never die from injury cuz you could engineer Deadpool like healing abilities.
And even if you didnt, since you can just upload you consciousness into these Avatars, and not need to be connected to your human body like they implied in the first movie, you no longer need Your human body.
And you can just make a new body if yours gets old or damaged, you have now invented eternal life.
Is that even a good thing?
    Overpopulation problems?
    Accesibility?
Who has the right to this technology and who decides who has the right to it?
Does EVERYONE have the right to *"Life,* Liberty and the persuit of happiness"?
    Is playing God ethical?`
Is having and fostering Children under this premise ethical?
Are you even still you if you do this?
Can you upload and AI into an Avatar?
It would give you and infinte army when at war.
If UI is ethical, whats the difference between an AI and an UI?
Youre both literally just electrical impulses in an artifical brain.
    Are you even human?
Does AI need rights? Should you be stripped of yours?
Is there such a thing as a soul?
What constitutes it and can an AI have one?
IF theyre just dummy bodies, none of these questions would exist...
But Jake+Waifu gotta have kids so... guess we just do this anyway and ignore the infinite number of issues it causes.
The scope and sheere number of existential and reality altering questions this would raise AND the practical applications it would bring...
You dont think THAT would be bigger news than some lump of rare metal?
One that you most likely wouldnt even need if you had this technology.
My point here is that this is stupid either way.
Either these ARE just dummy bodies and Jake+Waifu having kids is rxtarded, impossible and makes no fakking sense essentially undermining the entire plot of the movie.
Or theyre actual living, fully functional bodies in which case the plot wouldnt even need to happen and is stupid and trivial in comparison to what *should* be infinately more important (and interesting) topics.
If they went with the philosophical plot, it wouldve been seen as derivative from movies and shows like Bladerunner, Ghost in the Shell, Armitage III, Pantheon etc.
But they are all *fakking amazing.*
And its not like what they DID go with wasnt even less original...
So I really dont see an argument justifying the decision.

Great summation! Have not seen the film yet, but have read/watched enough reviews to get the basic story.
I agree that there were some great missed opportunities for character development. The return of Quarrich could have been made much more interesting by the simple expedient of making his resurrection in an avatar body an involuntary one on his part, forced on him by his superiors. Being a good soldier, he would follow orders, but his inner conflict, resentment, and self-hatred could have led to an interesting arc, one that could carry over a couple of installments. This does not mention that his personality and memory upload to the avatar body could have included the moment of his death, which would add an extra layer of trauma to deal with.
An interweaving of his story with that of Spider (supposedly his son), could have even led to a redemption arc of sorts for him.

When all a movie has going for it is technology, and technology keeps marching on, how relevant can it be in the future?

To answer your last inane question: if you think "technology" is the only thing the Avatar series has going for it, then you're even more naive than you let on. What are you - 14? 15? FYI Sparky, movies are a VISUAL medium, and Cameron is an absolute master of visual storytelling. Imagination, cinematography, camera angles, movements, lighting, shadows, music, etc can all be used to create emotion. The technology that makes it all look and feel real is just the icing on the cake. Are you starting to understand, kiddo? How have they been proven wrong? Because people are watching the new one? That's the only reason for its bump in popularity. All the talk around Avatar had completely died down until the new one surfaced.
      >if you think "technology" is the only thing the Avatar series has going for it, then you're even more naive than you let on
And then you pretty much go to prove his point by only mentioning technical aspects. No mention of acting or the strength of its story. The story, characters and dialogue are horrendous. It's not quotable, it doesn't have any particularly iconic moments, the characters are forgettable and one dimensional - it's a film that was sold solely on its technological prowess. And because the novelty of the visuals wore off, people swiftly forgot about it because it offers nothing else of value. The same fate will await the new one.
      >Avatar 2 is extremely popular and will continue to crush all your favorites at the box office
OK....I really, REALLY don't understand why you're so invested in how much money a film makes. Does Avatar 2 'crushing all our favourites' (whatever they are..?) make our films less better in terms of quality? Or wipe them out of existence? Does it enhance your quality of life if 'your' film beats 'my' film? Will it increase your penis size? Why are you treating films like they're a sport in a me vs you type mentality? Will you be getting any of the money the film makes? Are you James Cameron?? Is the amount of money a film makes an indication of its quality? Is it therefore true that Transformers and the Twilight franchise are world-beating masterpieces and Fight Club and Shawshank Redemption are absolute garbage? Please try and answer as many of these questions as you can (If you can).
P.S Zero competition, inflated 3D ticket prices and released during the highly lucrative xmas season. Of course it was bound to make money.
      >You and Thorias are the ones in the sad, angry, lonely minority.
The irony going on here is delicious. Let me recite a few phrases back to you, the supposed 'non-angry' person:
      'An Avatar hater...'
      'you losers...'
'Your dedication to stupidity is almost admirable.'
'To answer your last inane question..'
'you're even more naive than you let on'

      'FYI Sparky..'
'Are you starting to understand, kiddo?'
'You and Thorias are the ones in the sad, angry, lonely minority.'
The levels of passive aggression and outright aggression you're displaying are astonishing. It might be worth seeking out therapy if you're getting that irate and angry over somebody disliking a film you like. I doubt even James Cameron himself would go to such laughable extremes to defend his own film. Extremely bizarre.

16:30 there's also a callback to Aliens when the youngest Sully gets sucked down the watetshaft and "not Sigourney Weaver" fails to hold on to her and Natiri has to go deeper into the ship to rescue her.

Thank you for the review, Thorias. I never had any plans to see it, but it's good to see actual criticism from someone. I've seen a lot of people who are negative about the film only because of Disney or James Cameron and I think that's drifting dangerously close to how the left acts. We should judge things on their merits, or lack thereof, instead of rejecting things because it was made by the wrong team like they do. If we want to believe we're on the right side, we should act like it and not sink to their level. Otherwise we've just got two bad sides desperately claiming their the good one.

14:55 it IS weird. Sigourney is past her 70s and her voice doesn’t fit the character at all. The moment she opened her mouth my sister looked at me and went wtf

Agree with you about Quaritch 10:17... another thing is the tattoos on the recoms... they awake with tattoos already on them...? Their bodies?
i mean the girl recom literally has a sleeve... Quaritch the eagle on his arm... i thought they were going to awake, gear up, and we were going to get this bad ass scene of the military avatars getting tattooed in some makeshift parlor in the vicinity of Bridgehead when they arrive... that would of been cool but I guess Cameron didn' t have the time..

Look, he maybe loves the ocean a lot.
It's maybe like you know, someone who loves to surf, or someone who just can't get enough of alpine trekking and breathing that mountain air. Or someone who just loves space and everything that comes with it.
I can completely understand why someone would LOVE the ocean as Cameron does.

Actually saw this earlier this evening (Tuesday). I chose to see it because there are very few "spectacles" being made my studios these days. I only saw the first film one time in the theater. Never desired to see it again. The same is with this film. I actually think it is better than the first all-around.
The true focus was on the children of the two main families. The two daughters were a lot of fun. The brothers were annoying. This is one of those movies that demands total suspension of disbelief all across the board. That's fine; that's why I chose to see it.
The visuals are amazing and immersive. I didn't see it in IMAX or Dolby Cinema; perhaps I may take a shot at that to see if I like it more.
On its own merit, I give it a soft 7. A good popcorn movie that requires a few trips to the rest room.
Happy Holidays to you and yours, Thorias.

I still haven’t figured out if I’m interested in seeing this. It’s not an automatic yes. I realized the other day I just don’t care about any of the characters at all. Not an iota of interest in any of them. I don’t even really care about pandora at all. If Disney wasn’t going to profit I would be more likely to go. Guess it lacks testosterone
