- The ROCK in REO Speedwagon, Gary Richrath has passed away. He was a MONSTER guitarist and songwriter. Those of us who wished he would return to REO and create some great new music will never have our dreams come true. He will be missed.
Lots of people can recreate a signature sound but only true artists can create and cultivate a signature sound, Gary was one of those people.
Actually, not THAT many people can even re-create his perfect tone. Very few in fact.
He and Terry Kath of Chicago are the most underrated/overlooked guitar players of their time. Maybe ever in rock and roll history.
You took the words right outta my mouth. Kath was maybe the best ever. Strong case for it.
Couldn’t agree more.
Agreed !!
100%
I agree
Gary was the best ever. Man, he was fast and played with a lot of feeling. RIP to one of the original guitar gods.
really great live. wow!
Gary played from the heart, loved the crowd and loved to play. Such a untouchable style, that no one seems to be able to duplicate. Well like they have always said, it isn't what you get while your here that matters, but what you are remembered for when you leave this world. RIP Gary!
Saw them every year for about 10 years. Never did they have a bad show. One of the best live shows of the 70s and 80s. Mostly due to Gary’s awesome guitar playing. Dude knew how to rock!
"Nobody talks with his guitar like Gary does !"
RIP Gary, your music will live on forever.
lots do, and some much better. He is playing on one of the best lead guitarists instrument ever made. the skill is to know you guitar, by playing it a lot and knowing exactly where you can get the not you want at any particular part of the fret board. his execution is very good, but there are literally thousands of guitarists who and do the same, some you will never hear of.
securityplus like you for instance
amen not a better man ever clawed his way up a real mans man rip brother oxoxo
sp - methinks you're a tool who's a bit too full of himself. You're certainly entitled to your opinion - like rectums, we all have one.
@@needaman66 what is so strange about your comment is, no one has ever sounded like Gary when playing the songs that he played. I would say the comment above is pretty correct. I can usually tell you who a band is on the radio, and what the song is within 2 to 3 seconds of hearing them playing on the radio without ever hearing a word, most times it is quicker, and if it's not the original band I can also tell you.
Just listen to the incredible tone 'Gary' had on the classic track, 'Keep on Loving You', that alone makes him a guitar hero. R.I.P. Gary, you'll never be forgotten as long as there's a greasy kid wanting to learn how to play rock guitar with quality and feel, they will simply be drawn to you in the end.... and they will listen and smile in respect and awe!
Gary Richrath was the GREATEST EVER!!! You knew it was REO when him on the guitar. He died much too young. He's got my vote for Hall of Fame!!!
Absolutely, Peggy!!! I couldn't have said it any better!
Amen. One of the original guitar GODS.
Peggy Miller Nobody like him! He had that magic only very few have had had: STYLE!
Loved Gary Richrath's guitar playing ability but 65 years of age is not dying "too young" to me. I was born the same year as Gary, by the way. The "too soon" part was his career crumbling due to his personal issues. That was a disappointment. However, he did enough during his active years to leave us fans with a lifetime of cherished memories.
Gary Dean Richrath had the cutest smile and thoes eyes ....REST EASY GITUAR MAN !! LOVE THE WINK
Never had a bigger crush than the sexy Gary Richrath ❤. That guy was so good looking!
Gary and those early MTV live videos are the reason why I started playing guitar to begin with. He was the ultimate rockstar
Oh my god, that wink🥰I was so in love with Gary,I still have every album REO made, no one can work a Les Paul the way Gary did,
An underestimated tremendously talented guitarist in a band I loved and grew up with
Gary was such an underrated guitarist ! He was an influence on many of us . RIP
Rest In Peace - Gary, now you're in heaven with the rest of the true legends of Rock-n-Roll, God Bless!
Gary One Greatest Guitarist player ever always remember you this song and songs you wrote. 1981. God bless you in heaven.
Saw reo in 1976..always thought Gary was a way underrated guitarist who didn't get the critical recognition he deserved. Rip gary
+weirdshibainu i wished i could have seen them when Gary was with them but i couldn't i saw them last year though they were awesome
Melanie Whitt The opening act was a band called Camel. I'd never heard of them, but they brought down the house. They really made REO work for their headliner status. While REO was an established act, it was still early in their career and both bands played their hearts out. I paid 6 bucks for my ticket to watch almost four hours of great music. A great evening. Too bad that Cronin essentially ran Gary out of the band later. Gary screamed on the 6 string.
I saw them with chicago
+weirdshibainu Agreed. Gary was very underrated and the heart and soul of REO. I wasn't a big REO fan, but most of what I did like about them, was Gary - especially on the live album. RIP
I never got to see them live with Gary but I saw them playing Like you do LIVE on you tube it was amazing
Self taught GENIUS who played with all his HEART and SOUL !! We will love YOU til eternity Gary !!
Whenever you hear someone's all time great guitarists list, two names you never hear are Gary Richrath and Neal Schoen. Both are extremely underrated players.
Your right Tim, I have said the exact same thing many times...
Steve Lukather is another great player from that era.
I agree, Tim! Two of the most underrated guitarists.
Gary was one of the greatest ever. Neal Schoen was amazing..
I agree! Two of the greatest.
I was completely gutted the day I found out that Gary had passed away. I was a bit of a late comer with REO, living in Australia we didn’t really hear about them until they released the “Hi Infidelity” album back in the 80’s and have loved them ever since. To this day I still have Gary’s lead break from “Take it on the run” as my phone ringtone. Rest In Eternal Heavenly Peace maestro 🎸
You are loved by so many, Gary. Thank you
Gary is THE BEST❣️ He WAS REO Speedwagon, no doubt about it. Will miss Gary forever! RIP ❤️😢
In my honest opinion simply the best in his era!
Often imitated, "never" duplicated!
A guitar hero, indeed. Thank you for your music.
Probably the most underrated guitarist, ever.
He was my favorite guitarist growing up... Listen to their live album - it's a GREAT tribute to Gary! He is missed!
Not only was he an amazing guitarist, but he was an accomplished songwriter. I liked the songs he sang too.
Talent at it's best. RIP Gary.
Not only was Gary an excellent guitar player, but a great singer and a great songwriter.
His stage presents on the right side of the stage will be always remembered
What a bad ass guitar player. Always like Gary Richrath and his unique sound through that Les Paul
GARY...this must mean Guitar God in another language. He is alongside Mr Moore.. and they will be making a hell of a sound up above 💔💔
Gary Richrath... You've Lived your talent... God Bless..
gary was a man who could beat you with a fair word or a fair fight which ever you picked,,, men like him are almost gone now...
This guys are having so much fun on stage, it''s very easy to forget it was their job. It's a testament to their abilities - particularly Gary's guitar playing and sound.
RIP Gary - missed but will never be forgotten.
REO didn't respect.
Having my own little REO tribute today. Saw them on May 1, 1977. It's May 1, 2021 and it seems like yesterday!!
that live record wow gary was just ripping i still put that side of the record on to this day 157/ flying turk / riding the storm they had tons of great tunes i just read gary passed, rip my friend, man 2015 lost some great rockers god bless to all the them.
MY FRIEND GARY R.I.P. WONT BE FORGOTTEN
THE best guitarist I ever saw in concert...just amazing! RIP, Gary.
+Ted Andrews He was amazing. Looking at some of the videos of him playing in 2013 he still had the same stage presence. Even though the alcohol had taken such a heavy toll on his body he still had the same stage mannerisms. Nobody owned a stage like Gary. He would give give you smile and make that guitar sing.
I've been to well over a thousand concerts, Seen so many great ones: Blackmore, Zappa, Page, Beck, Clapton, etc. Gary was as good, or better than any of them...
god bless you ted thanks..xoxo
@@obbor4 amen yes he he was .............
@@obbor4 have you ever noticed that the so called "greats" could be copied? Have you ever heard anyone copy and sound exactly like Gary? I haven't, and that's the reason I'm asking.
My friend Mike Brown was a huge REO fan. He turned me on to REO SPEEDWAGIN in 1975. He was killed in an accident when he was 18 years old, and I'll always remember the good times we had together. He looked sort of like Gary Rickrath, and had all the REO albums.
double live- got it for christmas in 81". Kevin learned from Gary how to produce and he took REO back to the 70s Air Supply sound yet, he is still making a great living off Gary's work.
I was at this concert in 1985! Rock on the Ring! Nurburgring, Germany!!!!!
He made a guitar without a whammy bar sound like it had a freaking whammy bar!!!!!!!
When i first saw Gary i thought he was the coolest guy on this planet. And he sure was.
What a great, energetic performance!
He is most certainly missed.
i cant believe hes gone he was a great friend rest in peace gary i will see you again soon
riverside drive was gary's place ... really loved his 944 porsche we called it baby shit brown...god bless you gary and deb,,, oxox
RIP Brother 🙏 you made my day many times!
The man was a legend. Peoria will miss him. Rock on Gary!
Had the pleasure of meeting Gary in 1977, good dude.
R.I.P Gary 😪
So underated! Great.onw of the top all time
I watch this just so I can see Gary’s wink and smile at the end of the video! I just wish I didn’t have to see so much of Cronin; I can’t stand him! RIP my sweet Gary ❤😢
R.I.P GARYRATH - WAY UNDERATED GUITARIST. R E O & FANS, THIS MUSIC WILL LIVE ON FOREVER...3/11/2016 !
This is the band that I've probably seen the most in my life...easily 20+ times. Always a great show, but sadly the voices, as expected, are fading.
Kevin Cronin rode Gary's coattails until he couldn't advance any further. Cronin disappeared in the presence of Gary's blinding talent.
Don't rest in peace, Gary. Rest in the comfort of your towering talents!
Kevin couldn’t hold a candle to Gary! We’re all onto him! RIP Gary ❤😢
WOW! I hold in my hand above my head my 80s bic liter, flick of the bic! Rock on in memory....and video...
For sure one of the greatest R.I.P.
I have worshiped REO SPEEDWAGON all my life and I will miss Gary Ive seen them in concert at the civic in Omaha Neb. 4 times and at college towns all over. Best band ever. My rock and Roll Stars,
GARY RICHRATH was never underrated by anyone who knows the neck,he was one of the greats, hell just listen,RIP SIX STRINGER
saw reo with gary and without its just not the same
I didn't want him to go back. Kevin Cronin didn't deserve him!! Rest in Peace Gary!!!
what do you mean kevin didn't deserve him, they were the pair that created magic dude. they were a match made in songwriting heaven.
@@harpoon_bakery162 Until he got thrown out of band .Saw Gary play at a broken down old night club.He was great playing and singing Reo songs
@@george25199 -- did he sing one of his signature authored songs "Golden Country" ? Of course, his voice is not like Kevin's so that's an issue with that song. I assume he had a Kevin Cronin sound a like
There is know one talk with guitar way Gary does. And one greatest song writer. Back 1980s he will always remember. Lots no 1 songs that Kevin sings. RIP. This one shock news. I truly bottom my heart. Always carry his music live on forever. All Reo Speedwagon music . God bless him in heaven. Only one Gary Play and talk with guitar. One greatest video. My favorte band since 1980s. I still see my brother drive around up down play all Reo Speedwagon songs. I was just there last Sunday at Surf Ballroom. Clear Lake Iowa for first time. To me dreams do come true. No one never told me about that place. I learn from videos at yard sales. I know songs live for ever. Years come. No1 album 1981 one greatest album today. I have five them record albums .
Love you Gary Richrath, you will be missed (have fun in Heaven playing your "guitar" for God and his Angels !!!.
What a loss Gary I loved you
That wink at the end - soooo cool Gary !!!!!! Stupid camera man not showing Gary tearing it up - either didnt show him or showed him from the back of the guitar!!!
*This was the Louisville summer jam 1980. I know because I was there.. See those beautiful Mountains?*
Saw REO the first time the first time in 1981 and again in 2010. Gary was just as great all those years later.
Gary was not in the band in 2010.
MAN i seen him in 78?79. Great show and I knew they changed guitarist! But didn't know Gerry was Dead. RIP Gerry 🙏. It might have been early 80s😬 getting old FAST 👁💚💨
I’ll be 65 yrs young next month, lol and when I was a teenager Gary was the most badazz guitar player on this planet as far as I was concerned. He was REO to me. RIP brother..nah F that, I hope you’re jamming your azz off up there👆🏻🎸.
I totally agree with you !!
I grew up 49 miles from where REO originated.
2020...still listening. RIP legend. ❤️🎸
REO, delivering the goods.
Miss Gary He was REO!!!!!
I saw REO five times. Three before High Infidelity. One of my favorite REO songs is Like You Do. I tell people that never saw them before High Infidelity that they missed out. Gary was fantastic! I have a friend I met in 87 and is a guitar player. He never heard of Gary and Ritchie Blackmore. I asked him what rock did he grow up under.
Like you do is an under appreciated gem! One of my all time favorites.
the hell, he didn't know Ritchie Blackmore nor Gary Richrath?!.
@@pierceelyhibionada342 I am serious man. Of course he heard songs but didn't know the names of those two super Guitarists When I mentioned Ritchie and Garry's names. He is a thump bump a dump music fan. So that is what he played. Songs like the old bar stand by Mustang Sally. Thump bump a dumb musix.
Love the end of this performance when Gary smiles and winks! I miss him so much! RIP sweet Gary ❤😢
RIP Gary Dean Richrath REO Speedwagon's Nohtin' without you
Love it, thank you for uploading this. I remember hearing this in the early 80's but have never seen it done live. Gary was an amazing guitarist who should be included in every top 20 all time great rock guitarists, sadly he barely makes the top 50! It's too bad they couldn't have worked out their differences and Gary got off the sauce, REO could have been a much bigger band. Sadly most people only know the "keep on loving you" version of REO.
Great live shows!
my Gary he's the man God picked out to go to heaven.
Seen the Gary Richrath band in Nelson Park...Decatur Illinois...R.I.P. Gary
Yes. Gary was so so underrated. Saw REO dozens of times as I grew up in Champaign. Hung out at Red Lion and Chances R. My dad, Leo Gordon owned the original KAMS. Sure miss those days. I like Kevin, but he sure queered it up here. RIP GARY!!!!
LOL...he sure did and raiding his sisters closet for his outfit doesn't help!
Neither Gary or his guitar would ever talk to a dude in pink pants, never.
Hell yeah.... RIP Gary.
Gary's tone sounds pretty light here compared to that 1981 live recording. Must have gone solid state.
Thanks Gary!
Saw the 3 times, once while doing my DJ gig. Super nice guys, Gary was the coolest fella you'd ever meet
From the first time I say REO live I thought this guy can play. They were a backup band at that time.
r.i.p. gary richrath
nobody plays the guitar anymore the way that Gary Stewart Place the twine the rain it all goes together so well they may he makes REO Speedwagon the band they are the band they was the band They will be REO ain't RL without Gary richrath rock on REO Speedwagon God bless you Gary richrath from Porter Wagoner.
The only fucking group that showed the singer rather than the guitar player when the guitar was ripping it up. No matter who was shining, Kevin had to hog the camera. Neil got tossed aside too, both founding members. Sorry, just MHO. Gary finally demanded it toward the last. I would have liked to watch Gary play, not Kevin's ass, you know.
RIP old friend. I miss you. Wish I would have been a better friend, and I would have been there for you. I hope you found the peace on the other side you never found here.
kutzbill agree...Gary never fully got what he deserved. World class guitarist and they let him walk. They lost out and only fans with their eyes OPEN can see that. Gary appeared to be a kind man. Myself I hope Gary is resting in peace
he is missed...peace Gary ♡♡♡
Gary was awesome.
Some friends and I had seen REO Speedwagon 🔥 live in Miami orange juice bowl stadium 1982 we always had good times back then . Now at 58 I still rock with my powerful Bluetooth items outside with some vodka.
Crazy unreal guitarist....rip
Abso f'n looty.
He's the man
I saw
I won't forget
Respect to a natural among naturals
They were always a great band to see live.
We miss having you play at our local bars when you were here visiting. Your home town homies.
Gary was never recognized for the guitarist he was. And he was one of the very best. And Terry Luttrell was the best lead singer REO ever had. Go back and listen to the early REO recording's of 157 Riverside Ave. , Dead At Last. Keven couldn't hold a candle. Anyone interested you can find the album/cd on Amazon now. It's great.
Gypsy Woman's Passion, Prison Women, etc ...... Great album !!!
Terry went on to sing for the band Starcastle, another good band.
Cronin's voice went to Sh*t not long after REO Two. It must have been the result of his castration. His live version of Ridin' the Storm Out is unlistenable to me.
Gary changed rock and roll history
Gary and Eddie are rocking it up in heaven
Growing up I had to listen to REO Speedwagon because I had a sister that loved rock ballads to me it was pussy music now those guitar riffs just remind me of the wasted years I spent being critical on ones guitar virtuoso RIP Gary.
In My Dreams🎵
I just found out he passed...... Boy am I sad......
God why do we have to listen to 3 minutes of Kevin's self indulgence to be able to hear Gary?
