    Great video Joe! and yeah I agree completly about how you just have to learn how to touch up / sharpen a blade if you plan on using it, I've gone through so many cheap-o sharpeners in my time to no avail but after investing in a worksharp system I was someone who has 0 skill in that area and find using stones near impossible.
    But eventually I became competent in getting legit razor sharp edge with it (still with plenty of trial and error), but until you gain some method like that for yourself where you can go back and touch up a blade after use etc then you'll most likey run into problems like dulling / edge damage and not being able to do anything about it really sucks + you can be happy with any new sword even if it comes dull because you'll be sharpening it up anyways vs being let down it's too dull etc.
    Even though it's an easy to use worksharp system as my method it still takes some skill / practice and concentration to get competent in but so worth it once you do.

    Love the kirin theme. Fun fact, a "Kirin" is a real animal. Earlier depictions Kirin from China look more like normal giraffes, but later ones look more like a dragon/horse hybrid. Even in modern Japanese, kirin means "giraffe".

    12:00 Antiques on average have larger tsuba than modern repros. Not everybody likes the proportions of a big tsuba in the modern market, but that added weight close to the hand made them popular, especially on heavy use swords like Sengoku era, or Satsuma rebellion swords

    One point that might have been unclear when talking about the distal taper on the saya, is that it is purely aesthetic. The internal shaping is what insures a good fit. I know that Matthew Jenson enjoys that more refined aesthetic and I feel his opinions do help shape the opinion of others; including myself his channel being both so prolific and long running. My counter is thinking is than thinner just means more likely to break. I don't think there is any functional benefit to taper on the saya, other than it's a little lighter in your obi. I am not expert though.

    • @JoeSteel1
      @JoeSteel1  Год назад

      Very good conversation piece, Astecthic vs function, yes it is truely more for visual eye candy, still durable enough for the casual cutter or simple collections, I wouldn't recommend to a serious practioner though, then again a serious practioner would be looking elsewhere for katana to train with so I wouldn't see any harm in a more visual appeal to the Saya, lighter in the obi, for most people, yes a more robust saya would be more durable, but Even ben on very expensive swords you see this Astecthic as a main feature, we are not in times of war with swords so it should be fine, but if you are talking historical, there are some examples of this style for non combative pieces for royalty, some tachi had thinned out sayas...looks nice, is it better no....the fit inside however was very well done to coincide with the taper...thanks for commenting friend

    Nice review. I really hope they don't change the sizing of their tsukas to match the fuchi. The tsuka is the important thing, not the fuchi. Recommended to John that they keep the tsuka at 38.5mm max just below the fuchi. Any larger is a detriment to proper handling.

    • @KF1
      @KF1 Год назад

      for reference, I have a large glove size and the one they sent me is 37.7mm just below the fuchi (huawei level good). If it had arrived at 40mm, I would have been unhappy. It's a small detail but it makes a huge difference to proper tenouchi

    Im curious about a differentially hardened blade. You say stronger than T10? That perks my interest also. Im not satisfied with the unokubi i have,its too top heavy.

    • @JoeSteel1
      @JoeSteel1  Год назад

      I go with the claim of the manufacturer but you can't really know that unless the sword is tested on matts and bamboo extensively as what you would use with T10 normally, but the issue is the swords are on loan and are not to be broken or pushed to far...im going to have to look into that....but they do cut with bamboo in their dojo with these swords, kind of limited to what I can do

    Cloudhammer vs Jkoo? Which is better in their price range?

    • @JoeSteel1
      @JoeSteel1  5 месяцев назад +1

      That's a tough one, jkoo right from the start is a better overall value, you get better fit n finish( include bull horn covers) and nice polish work in their blades...that being said CH. offers better and some super steels, but you will Pay for it...the only issue I've seen the rest of the sword can fall short at times with better steel, but CH. swords also cut and perform well as do jkoo but not as well as CH. because of the better steels...pros and cons to both
